Newcastle are planning to offer Anthony Gordon a new contract that would make him the highest paid player at the club amid interest from their Premier League rivals.

The England winger, 23, was the subject of interest from Liverpool back in the summer after the Reds were approached by Newcastle over a potential deal as they sought to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Gordon ended up remaining at St. James’ Park and has made a fine start to the new campaign – and the Magpies are now keen to tie him down to a bumper new deal.

As first revealed by The Mail, Newcastle are willing to offer Gordon a deal worth just shy of £9million a year: a salary which would eclipse that of the club’s current highest earner, Bruno Guimaraes.

Preliminary talks have already been held with the representatives of the player, who has continued to be linked with Liverpool and is now attracting the interest of Arsenal.

It’s outlined that Newcastle could consider cashing in on Gordon, who was open to joining a club in the Champions League this summer, next year if he fails to commit to a new deal.

While it remains to be seen if Liverpool would rekindle their interest in Gordon were that to happen following their capture of Federico Chiesa last month, interest from Arsenal could turn the winger’s head in the coming months.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe refused to be drawn on speculation Gordon could still move to Anfield prior to last month’s transfer deadline but he did not outline that the club would do what they could to keep him on their books.

Speaking back in August, Howe said of the former Everton man: “I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place. Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game.

“We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.

“I have been in the game too long to make those statements [on whether Gordon could join Liverpool]. What I will say is from my part and the club’s part we will do everything we can to keep our best players but I am not a fortune teller.”
