Vinicius Junior may have felt disrespected by his Ballon d’Or snub, but he had plenty of support inside the ceremony on Monday night.

Manchester City midfielder Rodri was the surprise winner, beating the Real Madrid and Brazil star into second place. Vinicius and his Real team-mates, including Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal, boycotted the event in Paris after learning of the result.

Rodri claimed the trophy following a year in which he helped Spain win Euro 2024 and City scoop a fourth straight Premier League title. But his victory has sparked a huge backlash in the Spanish capital, with Real saying they didn’t show up because they are “not respected”.

It was clear that many inside the venue – the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris – were on their side though. As George Weah went to open the letter with the winners’ name in, there were chants of “Vini! Vini!” going around the theatre. Their shouts prompted an intervention from the presenter who said: “Suspense everyone! Let’s hear George Weah.”

They were quickly disappointed as Rodri was announced as the winner and came up on stage to give a speech. The City midfielder thanked those who voted, his family and team-mates – including shout-outs for Carvajal and Lamine Yamal – before some concluding words.

“This is not just a victory for me, but for Spanish football,” he said. “So many players who didn’t win the award, but deserved it, this is a victory of Spanish football.”

Real certainly didn’t appear to agree. Explaining their absence, which included manager Carlo Ancelotti and club president Florentino Perez, they told AFP : “If the award criteria doesn’t give it to Vinicius as the winner, then those same criteria should point to Carvajal as the winner. As this was not the case, it is clear that Ballon d’Or-UEFA does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected.”

Vinicius quickly reacted to the news, tweeting simply: “I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready.” He received plenty of support, with his club and national team-mate Rodrygo writing on Instagram : “And so the world goes on, Vini Jr, I love you.”

Brazil forward Ricarlison wrote: “Vini not getting that Ballon d’Or was embarrassing, and the only person who lost today was football.” Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta said: “Just so you know that I’m proud to say that I’m your friend, that I admire you and root for you more than any victory of mine!

“That I admire your story and the person you’ve become! You’re the best! Even if they say otherwise! I love you and we’re closer than ever! Always moving forward!!!”
