Manchester United are closing in on the appointment of Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim having sacked Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman was let go by the Red Devils after two-and-a-half years in charge, with United down in 14th place in the Premier League, after just three wins from their opening nine games.
Amorim swiftly became No1 target to replace Ten Hag, and on Tuesday, the Portuguese club confirmed United had expressed an interest in triggering the in-demand coach’s release clause. With now just the final details to be ironed out, attention is turning towards a new era at Old Trafford.
He will have a lot of work to do when he arrives at Old Trafford, though. Mirror Football have looked at the first five things that should be in the Portuguese manager’s in-tray.
Start picking up points and climb the table
It might sound obvious, but the immediate task for Amorim is to halt the team’s slide down the table and start picking up points.
With United down in 14th place, with 11 points from 27, they cannot afford any further setbacks and must put together a winning run to climb the table, to put them back within touching distance of the top four and back in with a chance of a Champions League spot.

Address United’s alarming lack of goals
United’s lamentable goal difference of minus three is down to their chronic lack of goals and failure to take the many chances they have created this season, underlined in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham, Erik ten Hag’s last game in charge.
United have managed just eight goals in nine league games and Amorim must get the team scoring freely again.
Establish an identity and a clear style of play
One of Erik ten Hag’s stock phrases during his United tenure was “stick to the plan”, but by the end of his two-and-a-half years in charge, it was impossible to identify any discernible style of play or clear game model, which is something Amorim must establish.
His 3-4-3 formation means there will be an immediate shift in the system United play, but he must also bring about a change of style, with the possession-based approach that has been so successful for him at Sporting Lisbon.

Make Old Trafford intimidating again
Teams used to fear going to Old Trafford, with many sides beaten before they even stepped out in front of 74,000 fans, but that is no longer the case. The fear factor has long gone, with teams relishing the chance to capitalise on United’s vulnerability at home.
This season, Liverpool and Spurs have won 3-0, while last season nine sides, including Brighton, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Fulham, all won there, underlining what a soft touch United have become at home.
Solve the ongoing injury crisis
There was some mitigation for Ten Hag last season, with 60-plus separate injuries, particularly at the back, which forced him to field more than 30 different back-four combinations.
It has been a similar case this season, with key personnel – including the perennially injured Luke Shaw – unavailable through injury, which is something Amorim must get to grips with if he is to have any chance of resurrecting United and turning them into a major force again.
