Paul Scholes has hailed Manchester City star Rodri as the best Premier League midfielder of all-time – in a snub to his former team-mate Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira.

Spain international Rodri scooped the Ballon d’Or ahead of Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Jr at a lavish ceremony in Paris on Monday.

Rodri’s personal triumph came after a remarkable year which saw him win a fourth straight Premier League title with City and Euro 2024 with Spain.

The 28-year-old lost just one game last season – the FA Cup final to Manchester United – with Old Trafford legend Scholes claiming Rodri is even better than Keane and Vieira.

Former United skipper Keane and ex-Arsenal and France star Vieira are recognised as the two outstanding central midfielders of the Premier League era.

But Scholes, speaking to Sky Bet’s ‘The Overlap Fan Debate, claimed Rodri eclipses both of them. “Rodri fully deserves it for all he’s done,” said Scholes. “He’s lost one game in the calendar year.

“Rodri is a better footballer than Vinicius Jr. Vinicius Jr will probably win you more games, he’ll be more skillful, but Rodri is a beautiful footballer.

“That position, especially where he plays, in that Spanish position where Pep Guardiola used to play and all these great players in there like Sergio Busquets, they make your team play brilliant football.”

Asked if Rodri was the best midfielder of all-time in his position, Scholes said: “Yes, but Roy [Keane] did everything as a midfield player. Rodri is a playmaker as well. He starts the play.

“There was time when Vinicius Jr wasn’t [effective], but there was never a time when Rodri wasn’t effective for his team.”
