Tennis legend Jimmy Connors has suggested Novak Djokovic won’t hang up his racket until the sport’s new kingpins force him out of the game.
Rafael Nadal is set to follow Roger Federer into retirement after the Davis Cup Finals, after which all eyes will turn to 37-year-old Djokovic. Talk is already starting to turn to when he’ll decide to wrap up what many consider to be the best men’s singles career ever seen.
But Connors is adamant Djokovic will only bow out when the younger generation makes it impossible for him to stay at the top. And while speaking on his Advantage Connors podcast (via the Daily Express), the eight-time major champion doesn’t see that happening any time soon.
“It’s hard for me to say he has had a drop in motivation because he does everything throughout the day to make himself as good as he can be,” he said. “With his training and his eating, everything about his day is centred around tennis and being the best he can be.”
Connors, 72, also touched on the inevitable ageing process as he hinted some on the ATP tour might see Djokovic as the “old, grey mare.” Nonetheless, he’s confident Djokovic still has plenty left in the tank to challenge the up-and-comers.
“But he has got the kind of game I like. He has a good return, an aggressive return. I am not counting him out ever,” he added. “He’s got guts, the game, and intensity. He is like [Rafael] Nadal, he’s not going to go out there unless he is ready to play.
“We talk about [Jannik] Sinner and [Carlos] Alcaraz, but the only way he’s going to say it’s time to go is if some of those other guys start stepping up too, or else he’ll keep hanging on. And what’s wrong with that?”

The most dominant force in tennis of the 21st century continues to defy expectation and replicated his previous best in the Grand Slams last year, grabbing three major titles and contesting all four finals. However, 2024 marked a drop in his relentless pace; he didn’t clinch a Grand Slam trophy for the first time since 2017, though ‘Nole’ did snag Olympic gold at Paris 2024.
Sinner and Alcaraz have been busy making names for themselves, meanwhile. The former triumphed at both the Australian Open and US Open, while the latter conquered the French Open and Wimbledon crowns.
While these burgeoning stars may disrupt Djokovic’s run of major wins, tennis legend Connors still spots the enduring hallmarks of a champion. And it’s possible Djokovic could continue to spell trouble at the highest level of the sport as he seeks to bulk out his Grand Slam cabinet even more.
