Manchester United have hailed Ruben Amorim as one of the most exciting and highly-rated coaches in Europe as they confirmed his appointment as their next head coach.
Amorim quickly emerged as the top candidate to replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday. Ten Hag paid the price for an awful start to the season, which has seen United win just four games in all competitions.
His replacement meanwhile is yet to lose a league game as Sporting Lisbon boss this campaign. They currently sit top of the Primeira Liga, having won the title last season.
United sent a delegation to Lisbon on Monday to begin talks with Sporting over activating Amorim’s release clause. The Red Devils will pay £8.3million to bring the 39-year-old to Old Trafford, with the club now confirming he will become their head coach from 11 November.
“Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements. He will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join Manchester United on Monday 11 November,” a club statement read.
“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years. Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to take charge of the team until Ruben joins.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain in interim charge until Amorim officially begins his duties. He still has three games to go as Sporting manager, against Estrela da Amadora, Manchester City and Braga.

United have insisted they understand Sporting’s desire to keep hold of Amorim during whatt is a crucial period of their season. They have also claimed that the agreement announced on Friday means Amorim will start almost three weeks before he otherwise could have joined.
Amorim was the only candidate United spoke to during their search for Ten Hag’s successor. United have cited his record of winning trophies at Sporting, as well as his style of play, personality and work developing young players as reasons behind his appointment.
Amorim is regarded as being ‘notably different’ from United’s former coaches, with his backroom staff to be confirmed in due course. Sporting have confirmed the payments United will make to release Amorim from his contract.
“Sporting SAD has reached an agreement with Manchester United FC regarding the terms and conditions of the departure from coach Rúben Amorim, in return for which MUFC will pay Sporting SAD Euro 11,000,000,” Sporting’s statement read.
“Additionally, Sporting SAD will have a benefit of Euro 1,658,000, relating to the extinction of credit rights, recorded as liabilities and contingent liabilities, as a result of the revocation and renegotiation of contracts relating to intermediation commissions.”
