Ruben Amorim has been named the new Manchester United manager following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal.
Amorim, 39, began his rapid rise to one of the biggest jobs in management when he was promoted from Braga B to first-team coach in 2020 and won Taca da Liga in his fifth game at the helm. After just three months in charge, he became the third-most expensive manager in history as Sporting paid his staggering release clause.
Since then, Amorim has won two league titles, ending Sporting’s 19-year drought, and two more League Cups. His success in Lisbon led the young coach to be linked with the vacancies at Liverpool and West Ham United last season.
Sporting have continued to grow from strength to strength, winning their first nine league games and remaining unbeaten in the Champions League. It’s easy to see why United were so keen to bring him in, and here’s a closer look at his personal life.
Net worth
Amorim became one of the priciest coaches in football history when Sporting paid to bring him in from Braga in March 2020. The Lisbon club forked out for his £8.3million (€10million) release clause after recognising Amorim as a standout young manager.
Considering that he spent nearly his entire playing career in the Primeira Liga – divided between stints at Belenenses, Benfica and Braga – Amorim would have earned substantial sums of money before transitioning into coaching. The Sun estimates that Amorim has a net worth of around £13m.
It has been suggested that United will have to cough up a hefty £8.3m (€10m) release clause to bring Amorim to Old Trafford. The club may want to act fast as Amorim has recently been linked with stepping into Pep Guardiola’s shoes at Manchester City.

Relationship with wife
Amorim has been married to Maria Joao Diogo since 2013. They tied the knot in front of 160 guests at the Palacio e Mosteiro de Sao Marcos in Coimbra. The pair have a son, Miguel, who was born in 2016.
The Sporting boss has tried to keep his personal life under wraps, but it’s believed the couple first crossed paths during his stint as a Benfica player.
During his two loan periods at Braga, Amorim forged a bond with Sporting’s director of football Hugo Viana, who is poised to join Man City next season. While Amorim’s connections to the former Newcastle United midfielder have boosted his coaching career, they’ve also benefitted his wife’s business endeavours.

Football relatives
Through marriage, Amorim is part of a footballing family. Luis Filipe, one of his ex-Benfica colleagues, is wedded to Maria’s sister Ines. Filipe bagged two league titles during his career and played for huge clubs such as Sporting, Benfica and Braga while earning three caps for Portugal B.
On the same side of the family, Amorim’s other brother-in-law is former PSG sporting director Antero Henrique, who is married to Daniela Diogo. Henrique notably managed Neymar’s record-smashing transfer from Barcelona to PSG in 2017 and has been employed by the Qatar Stars League since 2022.
