There was no downing tools from Sporting Lisbon’s players, as the Portuguese champions put on a show after manager Ruben Amorim was confirmed to be heading to Manchester United.
Star striker Viktor Gyokeres moved onto 20 goals for the season by scoring four against visitors Estrela da Amadora, three of which came in a scintillating first-half hat-trick. Ex-Coventry City star Gyokeres, who was linked with Arsenal and Chelsea during the summer transfer window, spearheaded an assured display to help Sporting maintain their 100 per cent start to the season defending the Primeira Liga title.
Just over eight hours before kick-off, United announced that Amorim had been appointed as the club’s new manager – officially titled their ‘head coach’ – on a two-and-a-half-year deal until 2027, with the option of a further 12 months. The Red Devils have agreed to pay Sporting €11million (£9.2m) for his services and he’ll start during the international break.
The agreement gave Amorim three final games to oversee and his first was a rousing success. Gyokeres, 26, scored his first two goals inside the opening 31 minutes before Rodrigo Pinho pulled one back for Estrela.
Sporting were a awarded penalty just before half-time, though, and Gyokeres converted to give his side a 3-1 lead. The Sweden international scored again in the 70th minute before left wing-back Maximiliano Araujo made it five in the dying embers.
During Thursday’s pre-match press conference, Amorim expressed concern over how his players would deal with the speculation surrounding his future, keen on them to stay focussed on Estrela. “By talking now, it’s destabilising the squad further,” he admitted. “Right now, the focus is on Estrela da Amadora. As for doing things differently, I wouldn’t. I didn’t control any of the situation.”
Speaking to Sport TV after the Lions’ 5-1 victory, Amorim confessed: “It wasn’t a normal week. Of course I felt different this week. I understand the anger and disappointment of some fans, but that’s life. I was moved by today’s ovation.

“I’m already in task mode, I’m very grateful to all the fans, to everyone here. Today I did the same as always, I only thank the fans when we lose, as we won, today I went back to the dressing room.
“Of course in the next game here at home, whether we win or lose 0-15 (against City), then I’ll say goodbye to the fans. It was the best period of my life, but I have to make my decisions and I take them naturally. I understand their pain, but we move on and time heals everything.”
Next up for Sporting is the small matter of facing Manchester City in the Champions League, Amorim’s last home game, and then they’ll play travel to Braga on Sunday, November 10. That brings the 39-year-old’s journey with Sporting full circle, having been poached from Braga in March 2020.

Earlier on Friday evening, Amorim made his first public comment in relation to the United job following their 12pm announcement that he’d be taking over from November 11. Speaking to a member of the club’s Scandinavian Supporters Club, Amorim commented: “Thank you very much for your support. I will not let you down.”
The 39-year-old’s first game in charge of the Red Devils will be away to Kieran McKenna’s newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Sunday, November 24. For now, Ruud van Nistelrooy will remain as caretaker manager. United welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday and Amorim will no-doubt be keeping a close eye.
