British teenager Oliver Bearman will make his third Grand Prix start of the season in Brazil on Sunday.

Kevin Magnussen missed yesterday’s running through illness and Haas confirmed late in the day that the Dane is too unwell to drive today too. So Bearman will bid to extend his 100 percent points-scoring record at Interlagos on Sunday having finished in the top 10 on each of his two Grand Prix starts so far.

He impressed yesterday by qualifying 10th for today’s Sprint, two places above experienced team-mate Nico Hulkenberg and one ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

The 18-year-old was woken at 6.30am yesterday with the call telling him he would drive and his parent team Ferrari have given him permission to complete the weekend with Haas. As for his Sprint qualifying result, he was left to rue an error on his final flying lap which potentially cost him sixth place on the grid.

He said: “The car was feeling really good all day, from the first lap in practice. I made a mistake in sector one, which cost me a lot of time as the rest of the lap was really good, so I am disappointed with that.

“Ayao [Komatsu, Haas team principal] woke me up this morning with his call about driving today, and I give my best to Kevin as I know he does not feel great and has had a lot of success on this track. I am happy to jump back into a Formula 1 car though, it is always a pleasure.”

Oscar Piastri secured pole for the Sprint with Lando Norris locking out the front row for McLaren, while his title rival Max Verstappen was fourth quickest. The latter was unimpressed with the resurfaced Interlagos track which was still very bumpy and the Dutchman felt it made his Red Bull worse to drive.

He said: “As soon as we went into qualifying we were definitely off. Our car is a bit difficult on the bumps. They did a resurfacing but they have made it worse to drive. It is extremely bumpy everywhere. That is not good for our car. In the bumpy areas, the car is jumping around a lot and it is unfortunately costing me quite a bit of lap time.

“When you are already quite a bit off over one lap, I do not think we are particularly the strongest in the race. We will have to see how that goes in the Sprint. Of course, I also know there is some weather around. That can come, but maybe not for the Sprint. We will have a look.”

His team-mate Sergio Perez again struggled as he could only manage 13th on the grid for the Sprint. And Hamilton did not fare too much better, again out-qualified by Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
