Ruud van Nistelrooy may pursue a managerial move to Spain or Germany if Ruben Amorim jettisons him from Manchester United.
Van Nistelrooy, 48, will be overseeing the Red Devils’ clashes against Chelsea, PAOK Athens and Leicester City before handing the reins to the new United boss. With the Sporting Lisbon manager bringing his backroom team to Old Trafford, it’s unclear if the Dutchman has a future at the club.
The former Real Madrid and United forward has already made it clear that he wants to remain at the Red Devils in some capacity. While his time as Erik ten Hag’s assistant did not go to plan, he made a strong impression as interim boss by overcoming Leicester 5-2 to reach the League Cup quarter-final.
He has also guided PSV Eindhoven to the Dutch Cup and the Dutch Super Cup. If Van Nistelrooy is to leave United, he will know where he wants to go next.
In an interview with Diario AS in the summer, Van Nistelrooy said the two countries he could see himself coaching in. He said: “I would really like to work in Spain, and I have had conversations with Spanish clubs.
“But also the other leagues in which I have played, I want to coach there too. In the Premier League, and the Bundesliga.”
Van Nistelrooy was reportedly being eyed by La Liga side Mallorca. Moreover, he was also linked with a move to Burnley, after Vincent Kompany departed the club to become the next Bayern Munich manager.

Instead, he answered the phone to his former side and became Ten Hag’s right-hand man. He recently admitted that he was disappointed by how things played out in his short time working with the Dutchman.
Despite his difficulty in the United dugout, he made it clear that he wants to remain on the red side of Manchester. When asked if he wanted to remain at the club after the win against Leicester, he said: “Of course. I came here as an assistant to help the club. Now in this role, I’m helping as long as needed.
“In the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further to build towards the future that’s what I’m here for. To go back to yesterday [Tuesday], of course receiving the players and getting together for the first day after Erik [ten Hag] had to leave was a sad day to share. Mixed emotions.
“He was the one that asked me to work back here again, and in the first conversation we had I felt such a passion and care for this football club. That is why I was so sad to see him go.
“Having said that, football and life continues, and we knew that 75,000 people would be waiting for us here today, with millions more watching at home behind their screens and radios and you have to switch then as players.
“We tried to switch that button for the players, try to get the mindset going and go out tonight and give everything for the fans.”
