The pressure is piling up on Sir Jim Ratcliffe after Manchester United spent close to £30million on their recent managerial change, despite a major cost-cutting programme at the club.

United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday after an awful start to the season that saw them claim just four wins. The Red Devils have moved quickly to appoint Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, though he will not take over until the November international break.

It is not how Ratcliffe will have wanted his first full season as the controlling co-owner to have gone. United are now 14th in the Premier League table and have three more games under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy to go before Amorim starts work.

Their dismal start comes after a summer of heavy spending in the transfer market, as well as the laying off of 250 staff in a cost-cutting measure. Despite trying to cut costs, Ratcliffe has been forced to sanction another sizeable outlay.

According to the Daily Mail, United have paid Ten Hag £15m in compensation after sacking him. The Dutchman had been handed a contract extension in the summer, making the compensation payment higher.

United will also have to pay Sporting a fee of £10.6millon to release Amorim from his contract. An additional fee will have to be spent to allow him to bring his coaching staff with him, though such a deal will be announced at a later date.

That will bring the total outlay close to £30m. Amorim will also be handed a contract worth £6.5m per year. The club saved an estimated £35m by axing those 250 jobs, with Ratcliffe’s strategy now coming in for scrutiny.

As well as cutting 250 staff, Ratcliffe has also cancelled the Christmas party and taken away credit card privileges from top club personnel. His biggest move though was to cut ties with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The legendary boss had been working for United in an ambassadorial capacity since retiring as manager in 2013. The Scot was earning around £2million-a-year, with Ratcliffe recently ripping up that deal.

United also saw a request to share transport to the Ballon d’Or awards turned down by rivals Manchester City. All of those moves, for little obvious success, saw Ratcliffe branded a ‘joke’ by former Spurs star Jamie O’Hara.

“What is he doing? He’s a disgrace, Ratcliffe. He came in, gave it the big spuds, he’s this billionaire and he’s gonna do this and do that… he’s been a joke! All he’s done is get rid of 200 people,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.

“They’ve got to bring their own food in now, now he’s trying to penny pinch on a jet for his Ballon d’Or nominees. Come on mate. Give us a rest, will you? Don’t tell me you’re a billionaire and you’re going to do this and that. A massive loserville, that one.”
