Manchester United legend Nani has backed Ruben Amorim to succeed at his former club after gaining first-hand experience of his methods in Portugal.

Nani played against Amorim’s Sporting Lisbon side on Friday night and was on the losing team with Estrela da Amadora. Viktor Gyokeres scored four times as Sporting ran out 5-1 winners at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

That win continued Sporting’s flawless start to the league season in Portugal, with Amorim having picked up 10 straight victories. His team have scored 35 goals and conceded just three times so far and could be on the way to a third league title in four seasons.

Amorim won’t be there to see that if it does happen, having agreed a deal to join Manchester United on November 11. The 39-year-old will succeed Erik ten Hag later this month, with United paying Sporting £9.25million to trigger his release clause.

Nani spent eight years at United, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League, and believes his former Portugal team-mate Amorim will continue his upward trajectory at Old Trafford. “All I can say is good luck,” Nani told Sport TV. “He has done an excellent job at Sporting, and I hope he can do the same at United, which is a great club, one of the best clubs in the world.

“I think he is in a great place. He will have the chance with excellent players to deliver a strong response, as he has all the conditions to do so.”

Amorim boasts a 70 per cent win ratio with Sporting and is considered to be one of the most promising young coaches in Europe. He was considered by Liverpool in the summer before they appointed Arne Slot, while Manchester City were reportedly keeping an eye on him after agreeing to hire Sporting chief Hugo Viana as Txixi Begiristain’s replacement.

He held talks with West Ham in the summer, but has now chosen to take on the task of turning things around with United. The club sit 14th in the Premier League, with just 11 points from their opening nine matches and Amorim revealed on Friday that he initially wanted to join next summer.

“At the beginning of the season, and the chairman was there to confirm it, I had a conversation with him and Viana, and I said that, whatever happened, it was my last season at Sporting,” he told a press conference.

“The season started and we started to have a very good season. United came along, paid the clause, above the clause, and the chairman defended his interests. I never discussed anything with the chairman. The only request I made was that it would be at the end of the season and they told me that wasn’t possible, that it was now or never.

“I had three days to decide on something that would completely change my life. It’s not the first time that I’ve had my clause paid by another club. Nor the second. I wanted that club and that context. It’s just like Sporting. It’s very hard for me to leave. More for me than for any other Sporting fan.”
