Alan Shearer hailed Mohamed Salah as “a great of the Premier League” after guiding Liverpool to a 2-1 victory against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool found themselves trailing to the Seagulls at Anfield after Ferdi Kadioglu’s opener, before Cody Gakpo levelled the scores in the second half. Just three minutes later, Salah popped up with what proved to be the winner – rifling into the top left-hand corner with a superb strike.
It was the 164th goal of Salah’s Premier League career – moving into eighth in the top scorers chart above Robbie Fowler – and Shearer was left raving about the Egyptian after his influential late impact against Brighton.
“He’s a world class player,” he told Premier League Productions, before joking about his goals tally – given that he holds the record for most goals scored in the league. “Can you imagine scoring that many goals?”
The Newcastle legend added: “He’s a great player, he’s been a great of the Premier League. No matter what happens at the end of the season with his contract, he’s an incredible player and a world class goalscorer. Love watching him.”
Fellow pundit Ian Wright agreed and said Salah’s ability to pop up with a crucial goal was admirable – even when he hadn’t previously been too involved in the play.
He said: “You’re watching that game and you’re thinking, ‘Mo Salah’s not had too much to say in this game. You think when the game comes down to it on the line he’s probably going to show his face’ and that’s what he did.”

Salah’s winner was described as “special” by Arne Slot in his post-match interview, praising the forward for the piece of innovation to cut in and strike an unstoppable effort into the corner.
“I was waiting for us to score the goal, but we didn’t,” he said. “That’s why I made the substitutions. Both of them came on really strong,” Slot continued.
“Then you can say it’s a bit of luck, but the goalkeeper cannot react. The second goal was a Mo Salah special. It’s not the first and not the last time he will score from that position.”
The win keeps Liverpool top of the table, two points clear of Manchester City – who lost 2-1 to Bournemouth on the same day. Slot will also delight in seeing Arsenal drop points after their 1-0 loss to Newcastle.
