Ruud van Nistelrooy is expecting a pile-on from his former Old Trafford team-mates if his Manchester United team stumble against Chelsea on Sunday.

But interim United boss Van Nistelrooy, holding the fort until Ruben Amorim arrives on November 11, knows it won’t be personal if Roy Keane and Gary Neville put the boot in. Van Nistelrooy, assistant to Erik ten Hag, still has 18 months left on his contract and hopes he’ll have a role to play when new head coach Amorim and his own backroom staff arrive from Sporting Lisbon.

In the meantime, he has three more games to make his own mark, starting with Sunday’s tough test against a rising Chelsea side on the march. But he’s aware there’ll be no favours from his old United pals – and he doesn’t expect any.

“Quite a few are in the media, yeah. We all do our jobs don’t we and basically they care for the club” says van Nistelrooy. “They want the club to do well, and they are disappointed when it doesn’t go well. They have opinions on that and it’s absolutely fine – I don’t take it personally.

“When I see them and have a cup of coffee with them, I have no problems with that. I appreciate them as former colleagues and I am still in touch with some of them.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took heat from fellow club legends like Keane, Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves during his three-year reign that ended three years ago this month. But Red Devils legend Van Nistelrooy knows the expectation at Old Trafford means failure brings a kicking for any United manager – whatever your back-story.

“Look, in the end you are going to be judged. I think after the Carabao Cup win against Leicester the reaction was very positive. But I don’t believe the hype or the drama that much, it’s the world we live in.

“It’s important to stay calm, stay focused, do my job on a daily basis and that also has to be the case for this club. We are not going to turn it around overnight, but I think we are going to get it done.”

One player who can step up and help make that happen is Manuel Ugarte, according to Van Nistelrooy. The midfielder signed from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer – and played under Amorim at Sporting before he left for PSG.

And although it’s been a slow start to life at United, Van Nistelrooy reckons Ugarte has real quality. “I am convinced Manuel will be a great player for United. He’s only been here a couple of months but I think he is a great signing

“He has very specific qualities in midfield where he gets in between players, can recover a lot of balls and get us into attacking positions.”

The same goes for Joshua Zirkzee, too with Van Nistelrooy adding: “Josh is similar to Manuel, he’s a young player with a lot of potential so we need to look after, give him time. He will get better and be a very big player for this club.”
