Sir Jim Ratcliffe aimed a subtle dig at the Manchester United first-team squad, hinting they did not have enough “quality” to win trophies as things stand.

The billionaire was speaking after watching his INEOS backed Britannia sailing team lose to Emirates Team New Zealand in the Americas Cup last month and was asked if he could draw any parallels between his work with sailing and United.

He and his team opted to swing the axe on Erik ten Hag this week and bring in highly-rated boss Ruben Amorim – who has a huge task ahead of fully taking charge on November 11 as he bids to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

Ratcliffe insisted you could not win silverware in any sport without the best quality personnel or equipment as he made comparisons to sailing and Formula One – saying the same could be applied to Manchester United’s recent fortunes.

United won the FA Cup last season but finished eighth in the Premier League, while this term the team suffered their worst ever start to a campaign and currently sit in 13th place – despite spending more than £200million on stars like Leny Yoro, Joshua Kirzkee and Matthijs de Ligt.

Ratcliffe said: “I think there’s one little crossover, which is that you cannot win the Americas Cup if you arrive at the Americas Cup with a boat that ‘could’ win the Americas Cup.

“Same in Formula One. Max Verstappen in a Williams, he’s not going to win the Formula One [World Drivers’] Championship. With football it’s the same with the squad in a way.

“That’s the parallel for me – you can’t win anything in football if your squad isn’t good enough to win something. The quality of the squad is a bit like the speed of the boat. That’s the only parallel [between football and sailing].”

Ratcliffe has been making huge changes to United since he completed his 27.7 percent stake in the club earlier this year, allowing him to take control of all football operations.

He has since brought in Sir Dave Brailsford and Dan Ashworth as sporting directors, Omar Berrada as the new CEO, and Jason Wilcox as technical director – with the group

With Amorim now brought in as their new man in the dugout, Ratcliffe will hope for a brighter future, but there is much work to do. United are currently seven points off the top four and have already lost four times this season.

The Red Devils face a huge game against Chelsea today, hoping to get back to winning ways in the league after a 2-1 loss to West Ham last time out.
