Chelsea are poised to rival Manchester United in the race to sign in-demand striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, who’ll consider offers in the region of £66million.

Gyokeres, 26, announced himself to the world on Wednesday with a sensational hat-trick in the Champions League against Manchester City. That takes the Swede’s goal tally to an astonishing 23 goals in 17 games this season, having helped Sporting win the Portuguese title last term during his first year at the club.

After leaving Championship side Coventry City for just £20m in July 2023, Gyokeres has become one of Europe’s most coveted strikers. His manager, Ruben Amorim, has agreed to join United next week, fuelling speculation that the former Brighton youngster will eventually follow him to Old Trafford.

The Daily Star report that United have now been told how much it’ll cost to sign Gyokeres, who has a €100m (£83m) release clause in his contract. It’s understood, however, that Sporting president Frederico Varandas will consider bids around €80m (£66m) in a move which boosts United’s chances.

But the Red Devils won’t be the only Premier League side chasing him. Chelsea are big fans of the Sweden international, having been linked with him over the summer.

The Blues could attempt to steal a march on United by signing Gyokeres in January. Part of the Red Devils’ agreement to secure Amorim’s services is that they won’t be able to sign any of Sporting’s players until July.

United are in need of a top-class No.9 after squandering the most big chances in the Premier League so far this season. The Red Devils have signed a striker in each of the last two summer transfer windows, paying £72m for Rasmus Hojlund and £34m for Joshua Zirkzee, each of whom have only scored once in the league this term.

Amorim dropped a major hint on when Gyokeres will leave Sporting after the 26-year-old’s heroics against City on Wednesday. “If I start joking about this Gyokeres situation I’ll get in trouble,” the incoming United boss, who has one game left in charge of Sporting, told A Bola post-match.

“This is my city, this is my country, so I’ll respect it. Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life will probably go somewhere else.”
