Manchester United have been hit with a massive FA fine after their draw with Chelsea.

The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by their Premier League rivals at the weekend. Captain Bruno Fernandes had given United the lead from the penalty spot.

But they were quickly pegged back by Chelsea after Moises Caicedo’s eye-catching equaliser. It means that interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has a win and a draw apiece from his two games in charge.

But it proved to be a costly draw for United, with their discipline under the microscope once again. Six players in total were booked for the home side, which saw the Red Devils reach the threshold to be handed an FA fine.

Manuel Ugarte, Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro and Amad Diallo were all given yellow cards. Lisandro Martinez was also booked for a challenge on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

VAR checked the incident and deemed it unworthy of a red card – a decision that has garnered criticism. United would usually have been forced to pay £25k for their lack of discipline but according to the Manchester Evening News, that has been increased to £50k.

That is due to United having already been charged for the same offence this season. The same happened in their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Fernandes was sent off in that game for a challenge on James Maddison. And despite his red being overturned, United were still hit with a fine for their lack of discipline in that game.

Speaking out on his dismissal, Fernandes said: “I don’t take him as everyone wants to see it,” he said. “I don’t go in with the studs, I take him with my ankle, it’s a clear foul but never a red card.

“Even Maddison when he gets up, he said it was a foul but never a red card. You can see it’s never a red card and if it is, we have to look at many other incidents. I have many incidents against me and I’ve never seen it come so quick as a red card.

“The contact is not that strong. If he wants to give me a yellow because it’s a counter-attack, I agree and I don’t know why VAR doesn’t call the referee to the screen. For me, it’s not a good decision.”

The Red Devils will be back in action on Thursday as they take on Greek side PAOK in the Europa League. Van Nistelrooy’s final game at the helm will then come at the weekend against Leicester at Old Trafford.
