Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim will be required to work with a more modest transfer budget than his predecessor Erik ten Hag, and instead is being tasked to improve players already at his disposal.

The 39-year-old is set to take training this week after arriving at Old Trafford, ahead of his first match in charge of the club against Ipswich Town this weekend. United bosses already have faith that Amorim will be able to bring the best out of big money signings such as Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

The former Portugal midfielder has already met with chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox since arriving in Manchester last week. The Telegraph report that Amorim will be given time to assess his squad and how the group adapts to his approach will be taken into account before making any definitive transfer plans.

Amorim already spoken highly of the faith placed in him by United’s hierarchy. The ex-Sporting CP coach is happy with the club’s plan.

“When Manchester United talked to me, Omar, they told me about their plans,” he said in his first interview. “It’s a real honour because I was the first choice to start that path. So it’s a great responsibility. But you feel honoured and excited to be part of that. And we know that if the team plays well and wins games, everything looks so much better and the people really start to believe in the new stadium and new ideas.”

“I felt a connection [with Berrada, Ashworth and Wilcox] and I felt we are in the same moment,” he added. We want to do something special in the special club. So, I think that was a key point.”

There is set to be some turnover at Old Trafford in the summer come what may with Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans all out of contract. Decisions will be required on Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo, whose deals are also set to run out but the the club hold options to extend the contract of each player.

Amorim is hoping to hit the ground running however. In the case of Hojlund and other young teammates such as Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, youth will not be used as an excuse in the search for success.

“I don’t want to say that we need time because we are a young team,” said Amorim. “They are prepared. They are prepared to cope with the demands of playing for Manchester United. They should be because they are here.

“We know it will take time and we will try to win time with the games. But we have to start since day one without fear, without thinking that they are not used to playing like this.”
