Usain Bolt is often left frustrated when adult fans ask him randomly for a race.

The world’s fastest man is one of the most recognisable athletes on the planet. With eight Olympic gold medals to his suited name and the 100m and 200m world records, the Jamaican still wants to be seen in action even in retirement.

However, now 38, Bolt is past the peak of his powers, and whilst he doesn’t mind making a child’s day by lining up against them, an adult wishing to try their luck has been revealed as something that annoys the star. Taking to the British GQ red carpet this week, Bolt was queried about people wanting to test their speed against him, where he gave a telling reply.

Asked if it was annoying constantly being asked to race, Bolt responded: “When the adults do it. I’m okay with the kids, but when adults do it…” Interviewer Amelia Dimoldenberg answered: “It’s just, like, not necessary,” with 38-year-old Bolt left in agreement.

Dimoldenberg then comedically explained she believed a normal person running alongside the 100m sprint at the Olympic games would provide good context – and the Jamaican seemed fond of the idea. “No, I feel, I feel it’s necessary,” Olympic hero Bolt added in jest. “Because a lot of, I think a lot of ordinary people always talk like, ‘I think I can do that’.”

Speaking on the Jonathan Ross Show in 2012, Bolt revealed what it was like to be the world’s fastest man – holding the 100m world record with 9.58 seconds, and the 19.19s 200m record too – knowing that he could beat every person he set his eyes on in a race. “It’s great, It’s wonderful. Sometimes I sit down and I think, ‘I’m actually the fastest man in the world,’ and I see people and say, ‘you know what, I can beat you’.”

Bolt continued, further discussing all of those who wished to give it their all against the Jamaican, including American actor and former professional boxer Mickey Rourke.

“I’m serious, it’s been crazy. Everybody, saying, ‘I think I can beat you,’ I’m like, ‘why do you think that?’ Seriously,” Bolt added. “True story though, Mickey Rourke, I actually raced him in the streets. We raced in the streets, and it was cool.”

When pressed on whether racing against fans could pose a risk, Bolt assuredly retorted: “The way I look at it, you can’t stress too much about these things. I try to enjoy myself. I try to do everything that I want to do. I have a quad bike, which my coach hates. But it’s so much fun; it gets the blood pumping.”
