Marco Silva insisted Fulham weren’t as bad as the scoreline suggested following their drubbing by Wolves – but will demand a reaction from his players.

The Cottagers saw their hopes of a Premier League top six spot blown away on a blustery afternoon by the Thames as they were thrashed 4-1 on home soil.

It hadn’t always looked like being that way, particularly after Alex Iwobi’s fine curling strike handed Fulham a 20th minute lead. But after Matheus Cunha and Joao Gomes had turned the game on its head, the home side struggled to create a chance of real note.

Their nightmare afternoon was summed up by Silva’s decision to use five substitutes in 12 minutes when trailing 2-1 – only to lose centre-back Joachim Andersen almost immediately with a calf injury. And Wolves made the most of their man advantage late on, ruthlessly picking off Silva’s side as Cunha and Goncalo Guedes added gloss to the scoreline.

“The first two goals it’s difficult to accept because we can do so much better,” admitted the Fulham boss. “You can’t concede the way we conceded the equaliser. It was great from a top, top player, but it was different from our perspective.

“We can’t just be looking at the score. The two goals when we were with 10 men didn’t reflect the game.

“We have to react – it’s not the first time that we are going to react and I really believe we have all the conditions to do it. We are going to analyse the game, to understand why things happened, and make the players understand too.”

Fulham now head into a tough run of fixture in December, with matches against Tottenham, Brighton, Arsenal and Liverpool coming up.

Silva is going to need that understanding and reaction from his players sooner rather than later to ensure the defeat to Gary O’Neil’s men doesn’t begin a run that completely extinguishes any European hopes they may still have.
