Judd Trump’s first-round clash against Neil Robertson at the UK Snooker Championship was suspended due to a medical incident in the crowd.
A spectator fell ill during the second frame, with Robertson leading 1-0. The players initially left the arena, before the audience at the Barbican Theatre in York were asked to do the same to allow treatment to be administered.
The UK Championship is the first Triple Crown event of the season, one of three majors alongside the World Championship and The Masters. John Higgins was playing on the other side of the partition, taking on Chinese youngster He Guoqiang.
Play on both tables was halted while treatment was given. After a brief delay, the crowd was told they could return to their seats as the unwell spectator was removed from the auditorium to receive further medical help.
The UK Championship is broadcast on the BBC and Eurosport, with both stations halting their live coverage of the match. The BBC showed highlights from the opening stages of Higgins vs Guoqiang, while Eurosport discussed the action in the studio with pundits Reanne Evans and Jimmy White.
Trump vs Robertson was the pick of the first-round clashes, with both men having previously won all three of snooker’s Triple Crown events. Trump has been the outstanding player of the season, while Robertson is climbing the rankings once again after dropping out of the world’s top 16 and missing last year’s World Championship at the Crucible.
Ronnie O’Sullivan was a surprise first-round casualty as he was beaten 6-4 by Barry Hawkins. The Rocket has been picking and choosing his events in recent times having feature prominently in overseas tournaments, including in China and Saudi Arabia.
