Marcus Rashford’s best years could still be in front of him, according to Ian Wright, who has hit out at those who have written off the Manchester United striker.

Rashford is at a crossroads in his career, with the arrival of Ruben Amorim as the new United boss perhaps triggering a change of scenery. United are open to selling Rashford in the January transfer window, should their valuation of £40million be matched, and the 27-year-old striker has admitted he is open to leaving his boyhood club.

He scored 30 goals for United in the 2022/23 season under Erik ten Hag, but has struggled for consistency since. His £325,000-a-week wages and contract until June 2028 means United may struggle to find a buyer in January, even with interest from Saudi Arabia.

Former Arsenal striker Wright discussed the situation with Jamie Carragher on The Overlap, with the ex-Liverpool defender suggesting Italy as a possible destination for Rashford. But Wright launched an impassioned defence of the England forward, stating that he “has the capability” to match the feats of Mohamed Salah.

In a post on Instagram underneath a video clip of the discussion, he added: “I got to Arsenal at 28, but you expect ME to write off someone with the ability Marcus has at 27!!!! So many of you are desperate to see these young people fail so that you can say you were right! You would take 1% of the career Marcus has had!”

Jadon Sancho, who is on loan at Chelsea from United and knows Rashford’s situation better than most, replied with a talking head and a 100 emoji to agree with Wright.

Although privately he would allow him to leave, in public Amorim has remained supportive of Rashford. However, the United boss did criticise his recent comments. “If this was me, probably I would speak with the manager,” he said before the 4-3 loss against Tottenham on Thursday.

“Nothing has changed, we believe in Marcus. Marcus is a player of Manchester United so there’s no change. This kind of club needs big talent and he’s a big talent, so he just needs to perform at the highest level and that’s my focus. I just want to help Marcus.”

Former United captain Roy Keane believes a change would work for club and player. “I don’t actually mind what he said, although it’s a bit long, but it’s spot on,” he said.

“Sometimes a deal just works for everybody. It’s been going on for a year or two now, there’s obviously a bit of talent there and he’s been at the club since he was a kid. A change would probably do him a world of good, for him and his team and family to go abroad.”
