Wayne Rooney and Plymouth Argyle parted company on New Year’s Eve – just before the former England star took centre stage in the club’s brand new 2025 calendar.

Rooney, 39, was appointed by the Championship outfit back in May but leaves with Argyle bottom of the table and four points adrift of safety after a rotten run of results.

The club confirmed Rooney’s departure by mutual consent on Tuesday morning. But on New Year’s Day, a post on social media showing Rooney as the poster boy for January in the club’s new calendar quickly went viral.

The gaffe caps a miserable few days for Rooney, who was sacked by Birmingham at the start of 2024. His managerial future is now in doubt after he failed to impress at both St. Andrew’s and Home Park.

It’s already been speculated that Sky Sports would love to land Rooney on a bumper contract should he choose to move into punditry. It remains to be seen whether Rooney is ready to call time on trying to make it as a manager, though.

As a player, Rooney was a legend for both England and Manchester United after bursting onto the football scene as a teenager with his boyhood club, Everton.

And another Toffees favourite in Pat Nevin has urged Rooney to consider his next move carefully after falling short at Plymouth. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Nevin said: “It was a tough job to take in. But that’s the good thing about Wayne Rooney – he’s not been afraid to take on tough jobs.

“None of the jobs have gone particularly well for him, so the question is does he really fancy it from here on in? The one thing I would say is he obviously loves the game that much. I know this because I don’t love it that much to go through that sort of pain, stress and abuse.

“I think Wayne will sit down after this and think: ‘Is this really for me? Do I want to be in coaching? Do I love the game enough?’

“There’s nothing wrong with going back into coaching or being assistant, but what are you building to? Because when you go through that route that can take 10-15 years. Do you need that? Certainly financially he doesn’t.”
