Alan Hansen has been awarded an MBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours list.

The ex-footballer turned broadcaster has been recognised for his work both as a player and post-retirement. The Scottish legend fell seriously ill over the summer and had to be admitted to hospital for treatment.

He was able to leave a fortnight later as those around the game breathed a huge sigh of relief. Hansen has been able to resume his normal life, taking part in activities like golf. Hansen began his footballing career with Sauchie before playing for Partick Thistle then joined Liverpool in 1977 and made 614 appearances, before retiring in 1991. He was part of the Reds outfit that dominated Europe.

Another Scot in David Moyes has also been recognised and the manager, who is currently out of work, has been handed an OBE. His most recent job saw him in charge of West Ham, whom he led to their first ever European title 18 months ago.

Moyes departed the London Stadium in the summer but is efforts across more than two decades in the dugout have been recognised. Gareth Southgate though is set to steal the headlines with the ex-England boss becoming a Sir.

He has been awarded a knighthood for his services to the England national side, guiding them to another final in the summer. Southgate came incredibly close to ending the country’s wait for a major title, but the defeat to Spain proved to be his final game before stepping down.

Prior to that he had led England to the final of Euro 2020, losing a Wembley, and the semi-final of the World Cup in 2018. Southgate also earned huge praise for the manner in which he conducted himself, taking on a range of divisive issues during his time in charge.

Away from football, in a year that saw the Olympics take place in Paris, one of Team GB’s gold medalists Keely Hodgkinson was been awarded an MBE. She is fresh off the back of being named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and will enjoy more recognition.

Hodgkinson was the hot favourite to win the 800m in the French capital and duly delivered. Fellow athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson also lands herself an MBE after picking up silver in Paris. The heptathlete was in the hunt to take top spot on the podium heading into the final event, but was narrowly beaten.

Former F1 driver turned broadcaster Martin Brundle is handed an OBE. The driver previously raced for McLaren in the 1990s but has since excelled as a pundit and the Sky Sports employee is among the leaders in his field.
