Alan Shearer believes Jose Mourinho could move to Newcastle or Everton as he plots a Premier League return.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss is currently with Turkish giants Fenerbahce. But he has already revealed that he is eyeing a move back to England at some point in the near future.

Mourinho previously said that he would be happy to take over a side towards the lower reaches of the league before back-tracking. Shearer has now offered his stance on Mourinho’s future and believes he could show up at his former side Newcastle or even Everton.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: “He is box office, and I think there’s always a message he’s trying to get across in the background so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was him edging for a move back to the Premier League.

“Where could he go? Let us not forget he was recently at Roma, who are now close to their purchase of Everton – is there a subliminal message in there for what his future holds?

“With his record, any club in the Premier League would always be interested in him, however, he isn’t scared of telling it like it is at the football club, so he’s going to tell it like it is and he’s not afraid of causing chaos.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if we see him back in the Premier League within the next 12 months. We know he’s always spoken very highly of Newcastle, and the link comes with his connection to Sir Bobby Robson.

“He’s always complimented the stadium, the atmosphere and the fans thanks to that link, but Eddie is rightfully going nowhere at this moment in time.”

Shearer’s claim that Mourinho could move to St James’ Park is a slight u-turn on his previous claim about his former side. He had previously calmed speculation that the Portuguese could take the reins at Newcastle.

“He has had an amazing career, Jose,” Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast in February. “Where he goes next I’m not sure. But, no, I am very happy with Eddie Howe at Newcastle and the job he has done and the role he is doing.”

A move for Mourinho looks unlikely to happen in the immediate future. He remains under contract with Turkish side Fenerbahce until the summer of 2026.
