Andre Onana offered his support to under-fire team-mate Altay Bayindir after the second-choice goalkeeper conceded a controversial goal in defeat to Tottenham.

Onana could only watch on from the bench as United crashed out at the Carabao Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The former Ajax star was among the substitutes as Bayindir faced difficult moments guarding the Red Devils’ net.

The 26-year-old first parried an effort from Pedro Porro into the path of Dominic Solanke, who was able to open the scoring for Spurs as a result. Ange Postecoglou’s side took a 3-0 lead after a second goal from Solanke and Dejan Kulusevki’s second half strike but United fought back through Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo.

Unfortunately for Bayindir, he was then left scrambling when Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner kick with 88 minutes on the clock. The Turkish international was judged to have been weak, but felt he had been fouled by Lucas Bergvall

Bayindir remonstrated with the referee John Brooks and was cautioned for his complaints. His mood was not tempered when a replay was shown on the big screen.

Following the end of the match, Bayindir once again approached officials. On this occasion Onana joined his team-mate in search of an explanation however.

VAR was not in operation for the quarter-final clash, meaning there could be no check for a foul. Nevertheless, the goalkeepers made their feelings clear with Onana being the more animated in his protests.

Support for Bayindir stretched further than Onana however, as head coach Ruben Amorim also asserted there was no requirement for his back-up goalkeeper to make an apology. Son’s goal had proven additionally frustrating as Jonny Evans netted a futile goal in stoppage time.

Amorim said: “No, he doesn’t have to do that. He has to focus. We will see the game, and we will improve every player of this team. We win together, lose together. It is not the individual; it is the team.”

The Portuguese coach stopped short of suggesting Bayindir was fouled however. Amorim refused to comment on the officials.

“I didn’t look,” he added. “I already said in Portugal, of course my career is really small, but I never speak about referees. I will not start now, I will try to maintain that for a long time.”
