Ange Postecoglou said he was “hurting immensely” after his tired Tottenham stars let two points slip.

But the under pressure Spurs boss remains certain that he can turn things around once an exhausted squad is boosted by stars returning from injury and, he hopes, new signings in January.

Destiny Udogie joined the six existing absentees when coming off with a hamstring injury against Wolves, while Rodrigo Bentancur picked up an avoidable yellow card in added time that means he is suspended for Saturday’s game against Newcastle.

And deflated Postecoglou said: “It doesn’t feel like we’re getting a smooth run at anything. As soon as we get one back we lose one.

“But we have to get through it. We still have a lot to play for. With what’s on the horizon we have to give them all the support we can to perform at their best.”

Postecoglou will give his players a couple of days off this week to recover “both mentally and physically.”

He added: “It hurts me because I’m ultimately responsible. I’m the person in charge. When I see how hard they are trying it hurts even more. They deserved a reward for their efforts even if they were dipping into their reserves of energy. It hurts immensely. At the same time it’s my responsibility to get us out of it.”

And while Spurs remain in the bottom half at the midway point of the season, the head coach believes they can still gain ground.

“At some point we’ll get a relatively healthy squad and when we have that we’ll perform at a high level consistently. We’ve already shown we can beat anyone.”

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira remains unbeaten three games into the job and he hailed his team for their resolve after star man Matheus Cunha was taken off at half-time with a hamstring injury.

“It’s a good result for us,” he said. “It was a difficult week after losing Toti [to injury] and Cunha at half-time. This is not a big squad. We must find solutions.

“The spirit I saw in the second half, the team tried to play more with the ball and create more situations to score. The personality shown, I’m very happy and proud of their work.”
