Former boxing lightweight world champion Anthony Crolla believes Anthony Joshua should hang up his gloves if he’s ‘not interested’ in ‘monster paydays’.
The 35-year-old suffered the fourth loss of his professional career last month against Daniel Dubois. Coming into the all-British showdown with ‘Triple D’, ‘AJ’ was riding a four fight win streak. That said, his plans to sit on the heavyweight throne once again were scuppered as he suffered a devastating knockout defeat to ‘Dynamite’.
Following his defeat at Wembley, Joshua has dropped to seventh in the heavyweight rankings and several legends of the sport have called for the Brit to hang up his gloves. ‘Dynamite’s’ promoter, Frank Warren, has recently revealed that his client’s next fight will take place early next year and is interested in the rematch between the two giants with February 22 pencilled in for a fight card in Riyadh.
While Joshua believes he can still become a three-time world champion, Crolla believes he’s ‘inspired’ so many, but claims he should retired if he’s not interested in the ‘monster paydays’.
In an interview with Freebets.com, Crolla said: “It depends what is in it for AJ now. There are some huge fights out there as Anthony Joshua is still a huge name. Monster paydays out there for him. If he’s not interested in that, then yeah, I think he should retire. He’s had an unbelievable career, he’s inspired so many and done so much for British boxing, for the amateurs, for the GB lads, he’ll never get the credit he deserves for doing that.
“The fight against Dubois was brutal. I’m not saying he can’t beat Dubois but other than the 5-10 seconds before the knockout it was a bit of a beating. When you have all that money in the bank, it’s hard to picture him at this moment in time beating a Usyk or a Fury or Dubois.
“If he is going to come back and fight him in the rematch, now has to be the time as Daniel is only getting better. I think he’s getting better. But of course, if AJ beats Daniel in the rematch, then call it a day. Unbelievable what you’ve done, you’ve avenged a one sided loss, but that’s only up to him.”
Many boxing fans were starting to believe once again that they may finally see Joshua and Tyson Fury go glove-to-glove inside the squared-circle. However, following Joshua’s latest defeat, it seems very much unlikely that we’ll see the two heavyweight stars settle the score in the ring.
While Crolla believes there’ll always be a demand for a blockbuster showdown between the pair, the 37-year-old claims that the fight doesn’t have the ‘same buzz’. He added: There’s always going to be demand for an Anthony Joshua Tyson Fury fight, but is it going to be the same as what it once was? No. If Tyson Fury beats Usyk and Anthony Joshua beats Dubois then we’re talking aren’t we, but right now it’s not got the same buzz about it. It’ll still sell out and do well, but it’s lost a bit of its glitz. The madness that would have been around it.”
