Arsenal duo David Raya and Gabriel Martinelli in agreement over Leandro Trossard after double blow

Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard has endured a tough week after missing a penalty against Shakhtar Donetsk in the aftermath of last Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth, when he was criticised for a sloppy pass which eventually led to William Saliba being shown a straight red card

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya is backing Leandro Trossard to bounce back against Liverpool following two damaging recent setbacks.

The Belgian attacker was blamed for William Saliba’s frustrating dismissal at Bournemouth last weekend as his sloppy back pass allowed Evanilson to race in behind the Frenchman before the Cherries striker was hauled down.

Trossard then saw a penalty saved on Tuesday in the Gunners’ narrow 1-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.

But Raya insists his resilient team-mate has the mentality to make amends, stating: “He has a great attitude, I don’t think that’s going to play on his mind.

“He’s a top professional and a top lad. I really don’t think that will affect him, he’s just got to focus on doing the right things as it’s just part of football.

“Everybody makes mistakes so I don’t think he will think too much about that. He just needs to keep doing what he’s doing because he’s a top player and he’s helped us in a lot of games this season.”

Trossard, who was also sent off in controversial fashion last month during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City, has been an influential figure in the absence of injured captain Martin Odegaard.

Fellow attacker Gabriel Martinelli, who helped force in the winning goal against the Ukrainians, is also confident Trossard will prove his worth against Liverpool.

He said of his team-mate: “He could have scored but we are behind him, supporting him. We know his quality and we go again. I’m sure he’s going to play well in the next game.”

Mikel Arteta had given the former Brighton attacker his blessing to take the spot-kick against Shakhtar, even though Kai Havertz was just one goal away from making club history and becoming the first Gunners player to score in eight successive matches at the Emirates.

The Spaniard explained after the game: “The players made that decision – the penalty takers are normally Bukayo [Saka] or Martin – after that we have two or three players who can take them. Unfortunately it was an opportunity missed.”

Arsenal are already four points adrift of the Reds and they will want to avoid falling even further behind the leading pack in the title race, even if it is still only October.

The contest is the Gunners’ last home fixture for nearly a month as they play four straight away matches in all competitions before eventually returning to home soil to host Nottingham Forest on November 23, after the next international break.
