It was enough to put Arsenal back within sight of Liverpool.
But the runaway Premier League leaders will hardly be quaking in their boots after an unconvincing and laboured Arsenal win.
Kai Havertz got the all important goal to push Arsenal up to second place and six points behind Liverpool, albeit Arne Slot ’s men have a game in hand. And putting a positive slant on the night, Arsenal got the job done, got the three points in the bag and are hovering should Liverpool slip up.
But the harsh reality is that there is no way Arsenal can even think about winning the title playing like this. They look sluggish, slow and it already looks obvious just how much they will miss Bukayo Saka ’s creativity and threat down the right wing during his injury absence.
Mikel Arteta ’s men look a pale shadow of the team of last season and, if anything, they have gone backwards and are definitely not the team capable of stepping into fading champions Manchester City ’s void. Liverpool are way better, far more consistent and entertaining because they have a whole range of attacking options quite apart from Mo Salah.
In contrast, Arsenal missed chances – Gabriel must still be wondering how he missed from three yards – against Ipswich who defended resolutely and shut up shot. But you could actually feel the nerves in the home crowd as the clock ticked down and the visitors began to press forward for an unlikely equaliser in the dying stages.
That is hardly the stuff of potential champions. The fans got frustrated and it does now feel that Arsenal rely far too heavily on set-pieces and Saka.
Havertz got the winner this time and Leandro Trossard had a good game as Arteta looks for solutions and alternatives in Saka’s absence. But Arsenal lack quality and depth. Gabriel Martinelli tried hard, worked hard, and yet does lack inspiration and ideas when Arsenal need a bit of magic.

Ipswich are doing themselves proud in the Premier League and will be able to hold their heads up high after a battling performance at the Emirates. But Arsenal hardly put them to the sword either. Incredibly, Arsenal had 91 per cent possession in the first 20 minutes. But it is just so Arsenal that they only managed one shot – Jurrien Timber’s effort which was straight at Ipswich keeper Arijanet Muric – during that time.
Arteta’s buzzword is control and they never looked truly in danger of conceding. But control can also be boring and predictable when Arsenal are crying out for skill, invention and unpredictability.
They got the all-important goal after 23 minutes. Martinelli’s cross from the right was only half cleared by Ipswich defender Dara O’Shea and it fell nicely for Trossard on the left side of the penalty box. Trossard’s excellent cross split Ipswich’s defence and there was Havertz to fire in from close range for his 12th goal of the season across all competitions.
You half expected Ipswich to collapse and roll over. But not under Kieran McKenna. They played with five at the back and won at Tottenham last month and stayed in this contest playing the same way.
Arsenal should have scored more. Declan Rice ’s in-swinging corner found Gabriel rushing in at the back post but somehow he headed wide. Rice and Martin Odegaard also went close to getting a second goal which would have made it more comfortable at the end.
But Arsenal were left to see the game out with the fans getting increasingly frustrated. No wonder. They expected more from this season and, even after a win which puts them second, they are nowhere near good enough to eclipse Liverpool.
