Manchester United appointing Ruben Amorim would go down well with Bruno Fernandes.
The Sporting CP boss is the leading contender to succeed Erik ten Tag, who was sacked on Monday in the wake of the weekend defeat at West Ham, which left United floundering in 14th in the Premier League. While nothing is agreed, the Red Devils are pursuing a deal for Amorim, who has won two Portuguese titles and two League Cups with Sporting since joining the Lisbon club in March 2020.
In recent weeks he has been suggested as a future Manchester City manager, with Sporting’s Hugo Viana, a close friend, due to move to the Etihad as the club’s new director of football next season. But a move to Old Trafford now looks far more likely.
That would please club captain Fernandes, a former Sporting player, who lavished praise on Amorim just weeks ago. Per Teamtalk, the Portuguese midfielder said: “Since Mr Amorim arrived at Sporting, it has been one of the teams to play the best football.
“They have been consistent, the signings have been right and they are in a very good moment. It’s a very well prepared team.
“In relation to Amorim, he shows that he is prepared at this moment. Coaching Sporting and winning championships is not easy, Sporting went 20 years without winning championships and Amorim arrived and has already won two, this shows that the work has been done well.
“If he could manage to do the same in England, Spain or anywhere else, you will never know until you get there, but I’m sure his qualities are there for everyone to see.”

Ruben Amorim is hot favourite to become the next Manchester United boss
According to The Athletic, United are ‘working on a deal’ to appoint Amorim and are prepared to pay the £8.3million release clause to secure the 39-year-old, whose side sit top of the Portuguese top flight.
United’s decision to axe Ten Hag was said to be unanimous. The club had wanted to give the Dutchman the chance to work within a new sporting structure set up over the summer, but results and performances forced their hand.
It is understood the club’s hierarchy had not seen enough progress in Ten Hag’s side to believe they were on the right path to challenge again for the Premier League title.
