Chelsea set a UEFA Conference League record with an emphatic 8-0 win over Armenian side FC Noah at Stamford Bridge on Thursday.

João Félix and Christopher Nkunku each scored twice for the Premier League club, who were six goals to the good by half-time. Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Axel Disasi and Mykhailo Mudryk scored the other goals as Chelsea recorded the biggest win in the competition’s history.

The previous largest margin of victory in the Conference League, which began in 2021, was six goals.

The result also equals the second-biggest win in Chelsea’s history. The club’s largest victory remains a 13-0 triumph over Luxembourgian side Jeunesse Hautcharage in 1971.

Chelsea sit top of the Conference League standings during the league phase with a maximum nine points from three games.

“The players once again showed how professional and serious they are,” Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca told reporters.

“It’s easy to sleep or fall down in this type of game. Football is full of surprises. What I asked them before the game was to show how serious we are, how professional, and they showed that.”

The home crowd had to wait only until the 12th minute for the opening goal, when Adarabioyo headed in a corner kick before the second came a minute later with Guiu intercepting a poor defensive pass before slotting home.

Another headed goal from a corner came through Disasi after 18 minutes, and in the 21st Félix gathered a pass from Enzo Fernández and slipped his shot under the keeper.

Mudryk curled a beautiful shot into the top corner six minutes before the break to make it five, and Félix netted his second two minutes later.

After six goals in the opening half, Chelsea took their foot off the gas, but Frenchman Nkunku did manage a brace, knocking in a rebound after his initial shot was saved in the 69th minute and then converting a penalty seven minutes later.

Spain captain Álvaro Morata has been taken to hospital after suffering a head injury during an AC Milan training session on Thursday, the team announced.

The former Atlético Madrid will remain in hospital overnight under observation and is set to sit out Saturday’s league game at Cagliari.

“Following a clash this morning in training Morata suffered serious cranial trauma,” Milan said in a statement.

“He was rushed to hospital where an MRI scan returned negative results. Alvaro is feeling better and will remain under observation at the hospital to comply with the protocol for similar cases.”

Morata, who started and scored in the Italian side’s 3-1 Champions League win at Real Madrid on Tuesday, was hurt after an aerial collision with a teammate.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente will announce his squad on Friday for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games at Denmark on Nov. 15 and against Switzerland three days later.

Mexico legend Andrés Guardado announced his retirement from professional soccer and will likely play his last match with fringe Liga MX playoff contenders León this Sunday.

Guardado, 38, had already announced his retirement from the national team in May, and unless his club side defy the odds and sneak into the Liga MX playoffs, the all-time caps leader for Mexico will say goodbye in his upcoming away match against Monterrey.

“I wanted to make public my decision to leave soccer at the end of this season and to stop being a professional player after 19 years,” said the veteran midfielder on a social media post on Wednesday. “[I want to] thank [club president] Jesus Martinez, who gave me the opportunity to retire in Mexico. I know that things didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but I’m proud to belong to this institution.”

Despite the addition of the Mexican icon earlier this year, León failed to qualify for the 2024 Clausura playoffs and are on the cusp of doing so again in the current Apertura tournament. If León is able to get into the postseason, Guardado would then take part in the playoffs that begin on Nov. 20.

“We are still with a slight hope of playing in the Play-In, let’s hope it happens, but if it doesn’t Sunday will be my last game as a professional,” he added. “I leave grateful and very proud of everything I was able to achieve, of having fulfilled my dream.”

During last month’s 2-0 win over the United States, Guardado was given a farewell match for El Tri in his hometown. Guardado is one of just eight players that have been called-up to five World Cups.

At the club level and after debuting with boyhood Liga MX side Atlas in 2005, the pacey playmaker made a name for himself through a long European stint that began in 2007.

“[I want to] thank Atlas that developed me, that gave me the opportunity to play soccer and to each of the teams I belonged to. To Deportivo de la Coruña, to Valencia, to Bayer Leverkusen, to PSV, to Betis,” said Guardado.

With León in 2024, the midfielder earned 24 appearances and scored once for the Liga MX side. During his time with Mexico, Guardado scored 28 international goals across 181 games and clinched three Gold Cup titles in 2011, 2015 and 2019. In 2015, he was given the tournament’s Golden Ball award.

He helped Betis win the Copa del Rey in 2022 and was part of the PSV side which won back-to-back Dutch titles from 2014-2016.
