Bukayo Saka has been backed to replace Mohamed Salah as the best wide forward in the Premier League.

The Arsenal star is in the midst of a sensational start to the season – and extended his form with a goal in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates. Saka’s record now sits at four goals and seven assists in 11 appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool star Salah also found himself on the scoresheet at the weekend – netting a late equaliser for Arne Slot’s side. And despite the Egyptian still being at the top of his game, Saka has been backed to succeed him as the Premier League’s best should he leave England by ex-Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant.

Asked if Saka is close to eclipsing the Anfield star, Pennant told Jeff Bet, he said: “No. When Salah leaves the league, maybe yes. [Liverpool boss] Arne Slot left Salah on for a reason and it was proved right because when you need that opportunity and need a guy in the box for the ball to drop to he will put it in the back of the net. So he isn’t replacing him as the best winger but when Salah goes it will be Saka.”

Saka could potentially claim top spot sooner rather than later. Liverpool star Salah has less than a year remaining on his Anfield contract and could leave the club for nothing next summer.

Pennant has not been the only one to praise Saka for his recent performances. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta also hailed his star forward for his return to the team.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Spaniard said: “It’s his consistency and the fact that he’s very young as well and he’s been very lucky with injuries so hopefully he continues to be there, but after a few weeks off, the way he played and competed was exceptional. I think we had some big, big individual performances in the team.”

Saka’s standout performance against Liverpool came just days after he had also earned praise from former England captain David Beckham. Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, he said: “You look at Bukayo, I love him as a player. I love him as a person, firstly, but I love him as a player.

“Everything that he represents as a footballer, not just on the field but off the field as well, he’s trying to make a difference in many different areas. But you know that he’s focused on his play as well. That’s what I love about him.”

Saka will be aiming to extend his excellent form for Arsenal over the coming weeks. The Gunners take on Preston in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday ahead of the weekend’s trip to Newcastle.
