Manchester United will face Tottenham in one of the stand-out ties in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
United were comfortable winners on Wednesday night, putting five past Leicester City. The 2023 Carabao Cup champions cruised into the final eight with Ruud van Nistelrooy in the dugout, but the interim boss may well have made way for Ruben Amorim by the time the next round gets underway.
The other matches will see holders Liverpool travel to Southampton and Arsenal host Crystal Palace in a London derby. Finally, Newcastle’s reward for beating Chelsea is a home meeting with Brentford.
The quarter-final matches are due to take place in mid-December. The two-legged semi-finals will follow in the new year, with the final taking place on March 16 at Wembley.
Arsenal got the better of Preston North End on Wednesday night to ensure only Premier League teams remain in the competition. Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and Kai Havertz were on target at Deepdale, with Preston following fellow Championship sides Stoke and Sheffield Wednesday in falling short at this stage.
Wednesday’s action began a little earlier as Liverpool claimed a 3-2 win at Brighton to keep alive their hopes of retaining the trophy. Last year’s beaten finalists Chelsea are out, though, with Newcastle’s two early goals doing the business at St James’ Park.
Finally, in Wedneday’s late kick-off, a heavily-rotated Manchester City team came up short against Tottenham. Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr gave Spurs a two-goal lead, with Matheus Nunes’ reply not enough to keep the 2021 winners in contention for a ninth triumph in the competition

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe got what he wanted after his team’s victory. “I want a home draw because this place is an amazing venue to play in and that was shown again tonight,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Sold out, great atmosphere, good performance and I hope everyone feels a bit better about themselves now.”
Manchester United’s interim manager Van Nistelrooy, meanwhile, hopes to still be involved by the time the quarter-finals come around. It remains to be seen whether he will still be part of the coaching staff under Ruben Amorim, but indicated a desire to stick around.
“I came here as an assistant to help the club,” the Dutchman said. “Now, in this role, I’m helping as long as needed. In the future, in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further to build towards the future that’s what I’m here for.”
