Manchester United midfielder Casemiro may not have been called upon by Ruben Amorim at Anfield, but he did make it briefly onto the pitch.

The Brazilian was confined to the bench as United put in a valiant performance to earn a draw against the Premier League leaders. The Red Devils may have even thought they deserved more as Harry Maguire crashed the ball over the bar in the dying moments.

It was United who had already been forced to come from behind late in the game however. While the visitors had opened the scoring via a fierce strike from Lisandro Martinez, goals from Cody Gakpo and Mo Salah ensured most expected Liverpool to claim three points on Sunday afternoon.

But it was Alejandro Garnacho who found Amad Diallo in Liverpool’s area to have a say on the final score. The young star has proven vital for Ruben Amorim and put the ball past Alisson Becker to earn United a point.

The winger’s celebrations were well-deserved, but with 10 minutes left on the clock, there was little time to bathe in the adoration of the travelling support. After sliding across the turf and celebrating with his teammates, they afforded him some time alone to be praised by supporters while he kissed United’s crest.

While the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Noussair Mazraoui entered conversation while returning to their own half, Amad enjoyed his moment. Casemiro, with his hood up to protect him from the rain, went across to his young colleague to give his own well done, but also to ensure the youngster retained his focus.

The former Real Madrid star put his hand on Amad’s shoulder to turn him back around, having strayed from the sidelines. The 32-year-old perhaps showed an element of the experience he can still offer the club even outside of the starting XI.

Certainly, club captain Bruno Fernandes will have respected his efforts. The Portuguese star wants to see United do more moving forwards.

“Being 2-1 [down] then scoring it’s good to get a point but we need more,” he said following the game. “Now we have an FA Cup tie at Arsenal and it is going to be very tough but we want to get to the final again.

“We know how tough it is to play against Liverpool. Today we put in a real effort to the game, playing with some passion and heart is what is going to give you something from the game. You have to put in effort and that’s why we took something from today.

“It can’t stop here, We have to bring this frustration to the next game to understand this has to be the level. If we can do it an Anfield, we have to do it everywhere.”
