NWSL playoffs 2024: What next for the eliminated teams?

Who had a successful season? Where does each team go from here heading into 2025? ESPN runs the rule over the NWSL’s eliminated teams. Who had a successful season? Where does each team go from here heading into 2025? ESPN runs the rule over the NWSL’s eliminated teams.

Call it irony. Call it predictable. Call it justice. Either way, the top four seeds in the 2024 NWSL playoffs — the largest postseason field in league history — all won in the quarterfinals. Then the No. 2 seed Washington Spirit defeated No. 3 NJ/NY Gotham FC in the semifinals, meaning the entirety of the playoffs has been chalk so far.

The NWSL’s defining characteristic has long been its parity from top to bottom, but this year, 16 points separated fourth from fifth place; 40 points was the gulf between top and bottom in the table. The four best teams — Shield winners Orlando Pride, the Washington Spirit, NJ/NY Gotham FC, and the Kansas City Current — were in a league of their own.

So, the expansion of the playoffs to eight teams (in a 14-team league) meant several below-.500 teams made the postseason. All of them are now watching the rest of the playoffs from home, as is Gotham FC.

Did they have successful seasons? Where does each team go from here heading into 2025? We’re putting a bow on all the NWSL’s eliminated teams and will update this as the playoffs roll on.

Playoffs: Eliminated by No. 2 Washington Spirit, 3-0 in penalty shootout (1-1 AET) in semifinals

Looking for flaws in a team that did almost everything right even under extreme travel and load circumstances this year — and after losing a semifinal in a penalty shootout — feels like an exercise in carping.

Yes, this was last season’s champion, and the team widely dubbed (from the outside) as a “super team” after adding four U.S. internationals in free agency, and there’s an argument that the goal was championship or bust. That would be too narrow a view considering the quality of the top four in the NWSL this season, and the argument that the “super team” title might better apply to any of the other top three teams.

If there was a single issue to point out about Gotham from the brief sample size of the 2024 postseason, it was the team’s defending on set pieces. They allowed the Portland Thorns to equalize on a defensive set piece moments after going ahead in their quarterfinal meeting — and in a game Gotham largely controlled from the run of play.

Then Gotham conceded an equalizer in second-half stoppage time to the Spirit in the semifinal, when they were on the verge of returning to the NWSL Championship.

Still, the foundation of the team’s future is there at least in the short-term.

“I’m really proud of players that have been here for years and helped the players that are new coming in,” Gotham defender Tierna Davidson, who signed with the team last offseason, said after the semifinal loss. “I’m proud of the players are new coming in and adapting to different styles of play or different roles that are asked of them. So, I’m really happy with this team. I’m really happy with what everyone has done. And that’s kind of a good way to end the season, in the sense of, like, I feel good about what this team is putting out onto the field.

“Obviously, we wanted to win today, and we wanted to be able to win next weekend, and we fell short of that. But I’m really proud of this team.”

Gotham utilized its depth better than any team in the league this year while playing more games than any other team due to making runs in two other competitions.

The big, noticeable difference between Gotham and the other three semifinalists? Gotham scored 41 goals in the regular season and only really got hot offensively in the final months. Contrast that with Kansas City’s league-record 57 tallies, 51 for Washington and 46 for Orlando. Gotham could stand to be more clinical in front of goal.

Chicago Red Stars (10W-14L-2D, eighth in regular season)

Playoffs: Eliminated by No. 1 seed Orlando Pride, 4-1 in quarterfinals

It isn’t surprising that the lowest-ranked seed in the playoffs put in the worst performance of the quarterfinals. It really isn’t surprising considering the opponent was the top-ranked Orlando Pride team that nearly finished the season unbeaten. But if there were ever a way to underscore the danger of overexpanding the playoffs, it was right there for everyone to see in the curtain raiser to the postseason.

Chicago got throttled by Orlando and looked doomed from the opening minutes. The Pride opened up a 4-0 lead before a self-induced error by Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse gifted Chicago a consolation goal. The Red Stars would have needed to play a perfect game to even have a shot at what would have been the biggest upset in NWSL history, and they didn’t come close. Orlando owned the midfield, and Chicago left massive gaps for forward Barbra Banda to run into. Banda scored twice, including a third Orlando goal on effectively the final play of the first half.

“We had some plays in the back that were just way out of character,” Chicago head coach Lorne Donaldson said after the loss. “As coach, maybe I should have fixed something back there. It’s not the players, I just got it wrong.”

Orlando Pride vs. Chicago Red Stars – Game Highlights

Watch the Game Highlights from Orlando Pride vs. Chicago Red Stars, 11/09/2024

Still, this season is one of marked improvement for Chicago. In 2023, the Red Stars finished in last place during an unnecessarily long ownership transition that left the team in limbo for much of the season. Backed by new majority owner Laura Ricketts and Donaldson as coach, the Red Stars jumped out to a bright start in 2024, defining themselves as a gritty defensive team that was happy to concede possession, frustrate teams, and take their chances on counterattacks. It’s a formula that can work in the NWSL — but it has its limits.

A season-ending injury to defender Sam Staab in July left Chicago thin at the back. Cari Roccaro, usually a holding midfielder, filled in admirably at center-back, but the team’s lack of depth and experience, combined with an in-progress transformation, meant it was nowhere near competing with the league’s best. Chicago failed to secure a single regular-season victory over any team in the top five.

This offseason will be about building depth around star forward Mallory Swanson, who is entering year two of a five-year contract.

“Obviously, we’ll look to get some better players — a few veterans and a few young players,” Donaldson said. “You build a team by getting better players. As I told the team, the unfortunate thing about sports [is] not everybody’s going to be around. There will be changes in our team, just like any other team.”

Bay FC (11W-14L-1D, seventh in regular season)

Playoffs: Eliminated by No. 2 seed Washington Spirit, 2-1 (AET) in quarterfinals

No lower seed entered the playoffs hotter than Bay FC, and the visitors nearly pulled off the upset in Washington, D.C. Forward Asisat Oshoala put Bay FC ahead in the 82nd minute to give the No. 7 seed hope, but Washington defender Tara McKeown called back memories of her forward days with an emphatic equalizer four minutes later in front of a raucous home crowd at Audi Field.

An own goal by Bay FC defender Caprice Dydasco decided the match six minutes into extra time. It was a cruel ending for a team that put in a gritty, defensive performance that was emblematic of the midseason transformation that got them to the playoffs in the first place.

“Who would have thought that six months ago, seven months ago, that we would have been playing the Spirit in the playoffs and we’re taking them into overtime?” Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya said after the quarterfinal loss.

Caprice Dydasco’s untimely goal helps send the Spirit to the NWSL semifinals

Caprice Dydasco accidently scores in her own goal to give the Washington Spirit a lead in extra time to help lead them to the NWSL semifinals.

Few people is the likely answer.

Bay FC was just the second NWSL expansion team to make the playoffs in its first season (San Diego Wave FC, 2022), making this campaign a successful launch. The team spent over $1 million on transfers, including a world-record €735,000 transfer fee (about $788,000 at the time, plus the possibility of $75,000 in add-ons) for forward Racheal Kundananji, and it loaded up their attack. They were poor and organized defensively to start the season, however, and they needed recalibrating.

Kiki Pickett took ownership of a holding midfield role after an early-season injury to Alex Loera, and the August arrival of center back Abby Dahlkemper marked a tangible turning point for this team. The 2019 World Cup winner with the United States scored in her first game for Bay FC, and Bay went 5W-3L-1D after she arrived.

Dahlkemper looks like her old self (a USWNT starter and top center back at her best), and Bay looks to have the spine of its team in shape. Kundananji and Oshoala looked well adapted to the league in the second half of the season, too. The foundation is there — if they can keep the group together and build on it.

Portland Thorns FC (10W-12L-4D, sixth in regular season)

Playoffs: Eliminated by NJ/NY Gotham FC, 2-1 in quarterfinals

There were more disappointing NWSL teams this season (San Diego went from Shield winners last year to 10th and could have finished last heading into the final weekend), but Portland’s erratic season was the most concerning among the playoff teams.

The Thorns made a coaching change only four matches into the season after the identity problems of 2023 carried into the new season. Then they won six straight matches, a run that led them to remove the “interim” tag from head coach Rob Gale. A seven-game winless streak after the Olympic break followed that decision.

Portland is a team stacked with individual talent, including star striker Sophia Smith. But too often this season and last, the Thorns relied on the USWNT star to be their lone outlet and source of relief from pressure when their midfield struggled, and their backline (and rotation of goalkeepers) bent and sometimes broke.

Temwa Chawinga puts KC up early in the NWSL quarterfinals

Temwa Chawinga’s initial shot gets blocked, but she gathers the rebound and buries a goal for the Current.

Smith could be seen in conversation with her teammates on multiple occasions during the quarterfinal at Red Bull Arena as the Thorns struggled to break Gotham’s waves of early pressure. Worryingly, she limped off the field with assistance in stoppage-time after having her right ankle evaluated. The ankle has bothered her since the Olympics, and Gale said postgame that Smith has “barely been able to train.”

Overall, another offseason of soul-searching awaits in Portland. Forward Christine Sinclair officially played the final match of her two decade-plus career. She spent all 11 years of the NWSL’s existence in Portland, and her retirement leaves a potential leadership gap for the Thorns. Defender Becky Sauerbrunn, another veteran leader, is out of contract.

Defensively, the Thorns need to figure out their preferred unit, including in net. (Bella Bixby, who had been the No. 1, missed the season on maternity leave.) But beyond that, they really need to own an identity beyond counterattacking through Smith. There’s too much talent there — including in midfield — to not dictate games more often. And expectations remain high for the three-time league champions.

This year was one of transition for the Thorns. That comes with its own challenges, but the expectations will be higher come 2025.

“We’re a club that’s building and growing under our new ownership, and there’s lots to look forward to with the new facilities,” Gale said, alluding to the training center new ownership has promised to build. “It’s a young, young squad but to a person they never turned on each other. You saw how much effort they put in as a group.”

Playoffs: Eliminated by the Kansas City Current, 1-0 in quarterfinals

Arguably no team owned and projected a sense of identity more than the North Carolina Courage this season.

Like last year, the Courage kept possession more than any other team in the league, offering a counterpoint to the notion that the NWSL is only about transition. The problem is that the NWSL still is so often about transition, and North Carolina often dominated on-ball stats, losing matches due to momentary errors. It happened in the regular season, and it happened again to a degree in the quarterfinal loss to Kansas City.

Rose Lavelle scores go-ahead goal in stoppage time

Rose Lavelle scores Gotham FC’s winning goal against the Portland Thorns in the 97th minute to advance in the NWSL quarterfinals.

For all the beautiful soccer the Courage played this year, they lacked a go-to scorer and too often tried to walk the ball into the net. Their 34 goals scored this season was the least among the top six teams. After the loss to Kansas, Courage head coach Sean Nahas called the team’s struggles to get around goal “the story of our season.”

Nahas also rightfully pointed out that his team has dealt with injuries throughout the year, none more difficult than the absence of 2023 league MVP Kerolin, whose 10 goals last season ranked second best in the NWSL. She tore her ACL on the final weekend of the regular season in 2023.

Insert a healthy Kerolin into this Courage team for the entire season, and perhaps North Carolina is contending for a home playoff game. She played in only four regular-season games this year, and though she started in the quarterfinal, she wasn’t 100% and couldn’t go the full 90.

Nahas called the 16-point gap from fourth to fifth “writer talk, not football talk” ahead of the playoffs. Indeed, the difference between North Carolina and Kansas City on the day was marginal, and the Courage will feel unlucky to have lost.

But a common theme among the top four teams is an MVP-level forward. Another way to look at the difference between the two teams in the quarterfinal is that Kansas City has Temwa Chawinga, who scored the game’s lone goal and buried 20 in the regular season to set a new league record.

That’s the missing piece from an otherwise strong North Carolina team. The answer could be as simple as getting a healthy Kerolin back, but nothing is ever simple: Kerolin is a free agent, and there was wide speculation last winter that she would move abroad. Her stock has risen exponentially since she arrived in North Carolina nearly three years ago and keeping her in Courage country could be difficult.

“I haven’t even thought about it,” Nahas said about next year. “I just know that we have to sort of lock up our players now and figure out what’s their plan, and we go from there. I’m just tired of getting knocked out in the first round, so we have to figure out ways that we can see beyond it, but these are the moments that you relish and you learn from.”

The new-look UEFA Nations League group stage is coming to a close, with much more at stake than you might think.

The new-look UEFA Nations League group stage is coming to a close, with much more at stake than you might think. The new-look UEFA Nations League group stage is coming to a close, with much more at stake than you might think.

The new-look UEFA Nations League (UNL) group stage is coming to a close, with much more at stake than you might think. In fact, you might say you need a degree in football administration to fully understand the machinations.

For the original editions, the Nations League was mostly about qualifying for the finals, plus promotion and relegation between the four levels. But the 2024-25 format sees more teams through to the knockout format, plus added promotion/relegation playoffs. And for the first time, the final positions will have some impact on the qualifying draw for the next FIFA World Cup.

With two rounds of games to be played, we look at who’s in contention and what it all means in the race to reach United States, Mexico and Canada in the summer of 2026.

Stick with us …

How does the UEFA Nations League work?

There are four “divisions”: League A, B, C (with four groups of four nations) and D (with two groups of three). League A is the strongest and League D the weakest.

Qualifying for the quarterfinals and finals

In League A, the top two teams in each of the four groups will go through to two-legged quarterfinals, to be played in March. The winners of these ties will take part in the finals, with one-legged semifinals and a final in June.

Promotion and relegation

The countries who win League B and C are automatically promoted to League A and B, respectively. Those who finish bottom of League A and B are directly relegated to League B and C.

There is some good news for countries who are relegated from League A in this edition. Being in League B for the 2026 UNL, they will be in a better position to claim a playoff for a place for Euro 2028.

The winners of the two League D groups are promoted, while the two teams in League C who finish bottom with the worst record go down.

Playoffs

New for this edition is promotion/relegation playoffs, also be to be held in March. Teams who are third in League A will play two-legged ties against second-placed nations from League B. Likewise, third in League B will face second in League C. The winners will play in the higher league.

The two nations who are bottom in League C with the best record will face a promotion/relegation playoff against runners-up of League D.

Why does it matter for World Cup qualifying?

There’s a handful of reasons and, remarkably, it’s more complicated than the UEFA Nations League itself.

World Cup qualifying draw seeding

Teams will be drawn into 12 groups of four or five nations. Groups of five will begin qualifying in March or June. Groups of four won’t play any qualifiers until September. Why’s that? Because fixture slots need to be free for countries to play those UNL playoffs and knockout ties.

The eight teams in the UNL quarterfinals will all need free dates in March, with the four finalists also requiring June to be empty. As the World Cup qualifying draw is on Dec. 13, FIFA won’t know who needs both March and June free. FIFA has therefore given UEFA permission to put all eight UNL quarterfinalists in Pot 1 of the World Cup draw. If you finish in the top two of UNL League A, you’re seeded and could get a more favourable route to the next World Cup.

Pot 1 will have 12 nations, and is completed by the four countries with the best FIFA World Ranking who aren’t yet seeded. England, who are in League B for this edition of the UNL, are effectively guaranteed one slot as they are ranked fourth in the world. As it stands now, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria would take the other three ranking slots.

For all other pots, places are allocated purely by FIFA World Ranking, and results this week could influence that. For instance, Turkey could take a slot in Pot 1, while Scotland and Norway are in Pot 3 but could lift themselves into Pot 2 with good results.

But wait … Depending on how many teams need to play promotion and relegation playoffs, FIFA may have to juggle the pots slightly. For instance, if there are too many teams in Pot 3 who need to have March free, then a swap with Pot 2 or 4 might be needed. That’s probably an issue for another day…

One more complication? As the UNL playoffs don’t take place until March, eight of the 12 World Cup groups won’t know their full lineup until then. Four of the groups with four teams will get “winners of playoff tie,” as they must be free for March and June. Four others get “losers of playoff tie.” Only four groups will be complete as of Dec. 13.

Playoff places for UNL group winners

The 12 winners of the UEFA World Cup qualifying groups will go direct to the World Cup. The 12 runners-up enter playoffs.

There are also four playoff slots for the best UNL group winners who do not finish in the top two of a World Cup group. What does that mean? Well, the UNL League A winners are very unlikely to need a World Cup playoff, which means winning a League B group will almost certainly give you a playoff, and being one of the best League C group winners gives a great chance.

There are 16 teams in the playoffs, creating four paths with one-legged semifinals and a final, to be played in March 2026.

UEFA and FIFA certainly know how to make this complicated.

Musiala admits he has ‘never looked back’ after picking Germany over England

Jamal Musiala says he doesn’t regret his decision to play for Germany and is hopeful ahead of the World Cup.

What’s at stake in the Nations League this week

This section will be updated through the final matches until the end of the group phase on Tuesday

LEAGUE A1

Portugal (10 points) need one point to secure a place in the quarterfinals, while Scotland (1) face an uphill struggle to avoid relegation to League B.

The real battle is for second and third, with Croatia (7) ahead of Poland (4).

Croatia have the superior head-to-head record so can book a top-two slot with a draw in Scotland on Friday. That will likely leave Poland facing a relegation playoff, though they could yet be overtaken by Scotland on the final day when the two countries meet in Warsaw.

LEAGUE A2

Italy (10) and France (9) are clear in first and second and, while Belgium (4) still have a mathematical chance, the quarterfinals spots might already be sealed. Belgium host Italy in Brussels on Thursday and must win to keep their hopes alive.

It looks like Belgium will face a relegation playoff, as they sit four points ahead of Israel (0), who have lost all four matches.

LEAGUE A3

Germany (10) have already booked a slot in the quarterfinals, while Bosnia and Herzegovina (1) must win both of their matches to avoid relegation.

Netherlands (5) go into the last week in second but are only ahead of Hungary (5) on goal difference. The two teams meet in Amsterdam on Saturday, and if there’s a winner they will be through to the last eight.

LEAGUE A4

Spain (10) have also secured a place in the top two.

Denmark (7) are in a good position and will be through if they better Serbia‘s result on Friday. If not, it will come down to the meeting between the two teams in Leskovac on Monday.

The best bottom-of-the-group Switzerland (1) can hope for is to climb above Serbia into the relegation playoff place. They face each other in Zürich on Friday, and the Swiss must win to have any chance of climbing off the foot.

LEAGUE B1

The group is completely up in the air, with the four nations separated by three points.

Czechia (7) sit top and have promotion in their own hands but sit just one point ahead of Georgia (6) and Albania (6). Ukraine (4) are bottom yet very much within touching distance of at least a promotion playoff.

Albania have two home games, which gives them an advantage, while Ukraine have it all to do with two away matches. Czechia can seal promotion on Saturday if they win in Albania and Georgia lose at home to Ukraine.

LEAGUE B2

The group may effectively be decided on Thursday when Greece (12) take on England (9) in Athens.

Greece won 2-1 at Wembley in October, so know they will be promoted with a win or a draw. However, if England win by 2+ goals, then victory at home to Republic of Ireland (3) on Sunday would secure first place.

If England win by one goal, the nations would be level on points and head-to-head, only separated by a goal difference of two — meaning the scorelines on the final day would be decisive.

Finland (0) travel to Ireland on Thursday and must win to avoid automatic relegation.

LEAGUE B3

Another group which is impossible to call, with nothing to separate Norway (7), Austria (7) and Slovenia (7).

Norway and Austria could be in the strongest position, as they both have to play rock-bottom Kazakhstan (1). The automatic promotion place cannot be confirmed on Thursday, but Kazakhstan’s relegation will be if they fail to win at home to Austria.

LEAGUE B4

Turkey (10) and Wales (8) are in competition to go straight up to League A and meet in Kayseri on Saturday. Turkey will be promoted, and secure a likely World Cup playoff, if they can get a home victory.

Iceland (4) have an outside chance of second, if Wales are defeated, but they would have to win in Montenegro (0) in their first game and then in Cardiff on Tuesday — which would dump Wales into the relegation playoff. Montenegro must win at home to Turkey to stand any chance of avoiding instant relegation.

LEAGUE C1

Sweden (10) are above Slovakia (10) on goal difference with the two countries meeting in Solna on Saturday. If there’s a winner in that game, it will come with automatic promotion. If the game is a draw, Slovakia may require a huge win over Estonia on Tuesday to finish top because of inferior goal difference.

Azerbaijan (0) host Estonia (3) on Saturday and must win to avoid being last. Having zero points, Azerbaijan also face being automatically relegated to League D.

LEAGUE C2

Romania (12) have the best record in League C, meaning they have an excellent chance of a World Cup playoff through the UNL — if they can hold on to top spot. They host Kosovo (9) on Friday, and a draw will secure it. Kosovo lost 3-0 at home to Romania, so would need a huge win in Bucharest to reverse the head-to-head record. The odds are that Kosovo will finish second even if they produce a shock.

Lithuania (0) must win in Cyprus (3) to have any chance of avoiding bottom spot. Like Azerbaijan, Lithuania face automatic relegation having lost every match.

LEAGUE C3

A close group headed by Northern Ireland (7), followed by Belarus (6) and Bulgaria (5). Northern Ireland host Belarus on Friday and will be promoted with a victory if Bulgaria fail to win in Luxembourg (2).

If Luxembourg can get a victory, they have a real chance of avoiding last place and couldn’t be automatically relegated.

LEAGUE C4

North Macedonia (10) are all but assured of promotion, and their record could yet get them a route to the World Cup playoffs. They need one point to secure first place.

The real battle is for the other three places between Armenia (4), Latvia (4) and Faroe Islands (3). The Faroes have two away matches, which puts them at a distinct disadvantage, but they aren’t facing a realistic threat of automatic relegation.

LEAGUE D1

Gibraltar (5) will be promoted with a win or draw in San Marino (3) on Friday.

Liechtenstein (2) will have second to play for when they take on San Marino on Monday, but they cannot win the group.

LEAGUE D2

Moldova (6) lead Malta (6) on head-to-head goal difference. Moldova will be promoted if they win in Andorra (0) on Saturday, which will consign Malta to a playoff.

So why has he not yet been able to translate his club form and status into success with Brazil? Vinícius is stellar for Madrid and is reaching his peak. So why has he not yet been able to translate his club form and status into success with Brazil?

Additional reporting by Gustavo Hofman.

Vinícius Júnior didn’t win the Ballon d’Or last month, but try telling Real Madrid fans that he didn’t deserve it. “Vinícius, Ballon d’Or,” the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu sang on Saturday, over and over again, as the forward scored a hat trick in Madrid’s 4-0 LaLiga win over Osasuna.

It was Vinícius’ second Bernabeu hat trick in just 2½ weeks. On Oct. 22, against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, he scored three times in the second half, helping Madrid secure a 5-2 comeback. The performance had journalists in the Bernabeu press box asking if this was the best 45 minutes of Vinícius’ career to date.

And it’s not just the fans, or the media. Jude Bellingham called Vinícius “unstoppable” after the Osasuna game. “He’s a leader for us,” Bellingham said. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has no doubts, either. He first called Vinícius “the best in the world” in February this year, after he scored once, and created two more, in a 4-0 league win over Girona.

Vinícius’ numbers for his club are impressive. This season, he already has 12 goals in 17 Madrid games in all competitions. Last year, he scored 24 times, including in the Champions League final. But that wasn’t enough to convince the Ballon d’Or jury that he’s the world’s best.

Details of the voting for the 2024 men’s prize — released last weekend — show Vinícius received 1,129 points. Manchester City‘s Rodri earned 1,170. Out of a 100-strong panel of international journalists, 35 thought Vinícius was number one. But 49 thought the same about Rodri. Madrid’s displeasure at the verdict saw them boycott the ceremony.

What more can Vinícius do to win over the sceptics? A frequent criticism has been his widely perceived underperformance with his national team, Brazil. For his country, he has rarely been the decisive figure we’re used to seeing in Madrid. More often, his displays have been divisive.

In five years playing for his country, Vinícius has only scored five goals. Two of them came in one game, at last summer’s Copa América. And while Vinícius underwhelmed at that tournament, Ballon d’Or rival Rodri was leading Spain to glory at Euro 2024.

Vinícius is now 24 years old and approaching his peak. So why has he not yet been able to translate his Real Madrid form, and status, into international success with Brazil? With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, is there any sign of that changing anytime soon? — Alex Kirkland

From raw youngster to breakthrough player and now a club star

Vinícius arrived in Madrid as a raw youngster in July 2018, joining from Brazil’s Flamengo when he turned 18. It was a bold, €45 million deal for an unproven teenager. In the six years since, he’s been transformed as a player and as a person. He’s now a global superstar, a Ballon d’Or contender, an anti-racism campaigner and a UNESCO ambassador.

On the pitch, his early years at Madrid were inconsistent. His natural talent was evident — notably, his explosive pace and dribbling — but so were his weaknesses, particularly his wayward finishing. Critics mocked his ability in front of goal. In his first three seasons at Real Madrid, his goal tallies in LaLiga were two, three and three.

“For me, it’s simple with Vinícius: it’s time, and playing football,” former Madrid coach Santi Solari — who first gave Vinícius a regular spot in the team in 2018-19, and is now the club’s director of football — said in Nov. 2018. “He has so much time ahead of him, he’s barely 18. Experience will make him a better player. And of course, we all see that talent he has, that’s obvious.”

A defining characteristic has been Vinícius’ relentless work ethic, and his desire to improve. He won over Solari, and eventually his successor Zinedine Zidane. His first truly eye-catching performance at the highest level came in the 2020-21 Champions League, scoring twice against Liverpool in a 3-1 win. His first goal, using his pace to latch onto a quarterback-style pass from Toni Kroos and finish confidently, was a prelude for what was to follow.

Vinícius’ breakthrough season for Madrid came in 2021-22, coinciding with Ancelotti’s arrival as coach.

Ancelotti’s advice in August 2021 was straightforward. “He has a lot of quality in one-on-ones,” Ancelotti said, when asked about Vinícius’ finishing. “I’ve told him he has to score with one or two touches. It’s harder to score after taking three or four. You have to be there, inside the box.”

The message was clear: play closer to goal. Take fewer touches. Finish instinctively.

His goalscoring took a qualitative and quantitative leap that he’s yet to manage for Brazil. A comparison between Vinícius’ LaLiga statistics in 2020-21 and 2021-22 highlights just how quickly he improved. In both seasons, he featured in 35 league games — 22 and 30, respectively, as a starter.

In 2021-22, he took 80 shots, *twice* as many as his 40 in the previous campaign. His percentage of shots on target rocketed from 32.5% to 53.8%. His expected goals almost doubled, from 6.47 to 12.35, and he went from underperforming that xG (with three goals in 2020-21) to overperforming (with 17 goals in 2021-22).

The result: Madrid won a LaLiga and Champions League double in 2022. In the Champions League final in Paris, Vinícius scored in a 1-0 win over LiverpooL. In 2022-23, there were more contenders for career-best performance — many would point to a 5-2 win at Anfield in February 2023, when Vinícius scored twice and created another — but the next leap forward in his development came in 2023-24, after Karim Benzema had left the club.

Instead of playing wide left in a front three, Vinícius would form an unconventional front two made up of two wide forwards and no central striker, alongside fellow Brazilian Rodrygo, with Bellingham behind them. A look at the heat maps for Vinícius’ last LaLiga season before Ancelotti’s arrival, 2020-21, and his most recent full season, 2023-24, shows a shift in his positioning, into the penalty area, and closer to goal.

imageimage

In 2024, Vinícius led Madrid to a LaLiga and Champions League double once again, and scored in the Champions League final. The strike which best illustrated his progression came earlier, though, in Madrid’s semifinal first leg against Bayern Munich on April 30. Vinícius dropped deep, pulling centre-back Kim Min-Jae out of position, before spinning and bursting into the space created behind the defender, shooting first-time past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. This wasn’t the finish of a converted winger; Vinícius looked a true centre-forward.

The long-awaited arrival of Kylian Mbappé this past summer has slowed that trend somewhat, with Vinícius often returning to occupy his position on the left-wing, although the pair have also lined up as a front two. After a slow start to 2024-25, Vinícius is now flying. If losing out to Rodri for the Ballon d’Or was a setback, Vinícius has responded in the best way possible, scoring in both games since, against AC Milan and Osasuna.

He celebrated his first goal against Osasuna by running to the touchline and embracing Ancelotti. A source close to the player told ESPN that Vinícius had been unhappy with the pressure his coach has come under in recent weeks — after losses to Barcelona and Milan — and wanted to offer a public show of support for the man he views as a mentor, and the manager who has known how to get the best out of him.

Mbappé’s presence means Vinícius must vie for attention in attack, but the stats this season show that Vinícius has been the better player. Vinícius has scored more league goals (eight to Mbappé’s six) and created more chances (24 to Mbappé’s 13). Vinícius’ shot conversion rate is 21.6%, to Mbappé’s 11.5%. Out of possession, the difference is even greater. Vinícius has made 11 tackles to Mbappé’s one, with a total of 42 defensive interventions (which include recoveries, tackles, interceptions and clearances) to Mbappé’s 17.

Despite the arrival of Mbappé — and the presence of another superstar like Bellingham — Vinícius is still the main man for Real Madrid, arguably the world’s biggest club, and has been for multiple seasons now. It makes his failure to convince for Brazil all the more puzzling. — Kirkland

García: Vinícius was unstoppable for Real Madrid vs. Osasuna

Luis García reacts to Vinícius Júnior’s hat trick performance for Real Madrid against Osasuna.

Why is Vini struggling for Brazil?

When Brazil coach Dorival Junior called up his squad for the November games against Venezuela and Uruguay, he was inevitably drawn into the great Ballon D’Or debate. He referred to Vinícius coming in second as “an unfair situation.

“If there was one decisive, lethal player whose talent was on display to the whole world,” he continued, “it was him. Maybe the biggest prize that Vinícius won was the recognition and respect of his people. The vast majority of the Brazilian people were aware that an injustice had taken place.”

But the last time that Vinícius played for Brazil, the vast majority of his compatriots did not seem too pleased with him. The team fell to a dismal defeat away to Paraguay, and he made little impression. Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro trusted in his right-back Juan Caceres and midfielder Mathías Villasanti to shut down Vini. Despite the Brazilians feeding Vini, he had no space to work.

A Rodrygo dribble opened up the defence, but left Vinícius with an angle too narrow for a dangerous shot. Just once he was able to cut in and unleash a shot, turned round the post by the goalkeeper. It was a frustrating evening, all pumped up effort and little end product.

TV pundits were calling for Vinícius to be substituted, expressing a widespread impatience — which a total of just five goals in 35 internationals goes some way to explain.

Vinícius first played for his country more than five years ago, but it is since the 2021 Copa América that he has been a permanent part of the squad. Then-coach Tite says that it took him time to find his feet in the national team.

At first, he was a substitute. Given his first start, away to Chile in a Sept. 2021 World Cup qualifier, he was taken off at half time, and subsequently returned to the bench. He forced his way back in as a consequence of excellent club form, but he was always something of a bolt-on.

Tite’s team played its best football with one out and out winger, Raphinha on the right, and Lucas Paquetá operating as a false left winger, cutting in to combine with Neymar. Right up until the first match of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, Brazil’s coaching staff was wrestling with a dilemma. The choice was either Fred, with Paquetá as a winger, or Vinícius, with Paquetá in midfield. In the end, they could not leave Vinícius out, and they were not disappointed. In Qatar, he produced his best international displays to that date.

He set up both goals in the opening 2-0 win over Serbia, and the only goal in the win over Switzerland. He put them on the path to a comfortable second victory over South Korea with the first goal, a cute shot back across the goal, and set up Paquetá for the strike that put Brazil four ahead before half time.

Vinícius had his moments in the fatal quarterfinal against Croatia, but was taken off soon after the hour mark, with the coaching staff worried that he was not pressing well enough, and the opponents were finding it too easy to get the ball to Luka Modric. Even so, Vinícius came out of the tournament as one of Brazil’s plus points. He had shown beyond all doubt that he belonged at the level.

Now, Vinícius is no longer a bolt-on for Brazil, and adds a bit of extra spice. Especially since the long term injury to Neymar, he is expected to be the team’s most potent attacking weapon. The plan is now built around him – but he has been an ineffective figure in humiliating games such as a draw at home to Venezuela, plus defeats to Uruguay and Paraguay, and a disappointing Copa América.

So where is the problem?

Does Ancelotti regret turning down Brazil? ‘You make me laugh!’

Carlo Ancelotti bites back at questions in his press conference after back-to-back defeats for Real Madrid.

Given the outcome of the Ballon D’Or vote, it contains a delicious irony. There is a type of player badly lacking in the Brazil lineup — one with the characteristics of a Rodri.

Vinícius is primarily a winger. As a general rule, the game cannot be won down the flanks without first winning the midfield battle. Without intelligent passing to take opponents out of the game, a player like Vinícius has a tough task. He has a restricted corridor in which to operate – -and the opposition are waiting for him, ganging up to deny him space. This has even been a problem with Real Madrid this season after the retirement of Toni Kroos, his main supply line.

Following Real Madrid’s first game in this season’s Champions League, against Lille of France, Predrag Mijatovic, the club’s former star, declared his concern. “Real Madrid’s midfield at the moment, ” he told the Spanish media, “has a lot of physical strength but not enough creativity. I missed Modric tonight and, unfortunately, Toni Kroos is no longer available.

“Everyone is talking about Vini losing form, but his style of play depends on how the ball reaches him. Against Lille the midfield was not creative enough to give him useful passes, the kind of service he needs to pull off his characteristic moves,” Mijatovic added.

Real Madrid’s midfield problem this season has been a consistent problem in the Brazilian national team.

Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães has perhaps been the biggest disappointment over the past year in efforts to solve this positional crisis. Since Casemiro was dropped, Guimarães has supposedly been the king of the midfield, but has yet to rise to the challenge. Paquetá in a deeper role offers a possible solution — he combined superbly with Vinícius for a goal against Paraguay in the Copa América — but his form has been wayward.

Other countries would love to have Brazil’s goalkeepers, centre-backs and wingers, but for years now there has been a dearth of all-round midfielders. The separation, so prominent in the 90s, of the Brazilian midfield into those who only defend and those who only attack continues to cast a shadow. There is no one to control the midfield, to push and pull the opposition this way and that, to open up the space — and then slip the pass to Vinícius. — Tim Vickery

Is there a solution to the Brazil problem?

Dorival Junior is putting his faith in time and temperance. As he gets used to his new job and spends more time on the training field, he hopes that things will flow better.

In the short term, Vinícius can count on increased public support. Injury kept him out of last month’s games — wins against Chile and Peru, the weakest teams in the competition which boosted morale and eased any residual fears of failing to qualify for 2026.

With ten of the 18 rounds played, Brazil now lie in fourth position — up from sixth two months ago. With six sides making it through automatically and a seventh going into a play-off, there would not seem to be the slightest chance of them missing out.

So if the fans were ready to get on Vinícius’ back in September, come November they will be in the mood to get behind him in the wake of the Ballon D’Or controversy.

How the football world reacted to Vinicius Junior’s Ballon d’Or snub

ESPN FC’s analysts and players sound off after Real Madrid declined to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony upon finding out that Manchester City’s Rodri won.

There has been a significant development during his short absence, too — the appearance of a centre-forward. Surprisingly, this has been a problem position for a while. Brazil recently tried to get round it with a move from the Ancelotti playbook. In the season after Benzema and before Mbappé, Real had Vinícius attack the vacant space in the centre-forward slot. The player said that it was the season in which he had learned most, and it was only natural for Brazil to attempt to get him to do the same thing with the national team.

But it is not easy to play without a focal point up front. Doing without a number nine is far easier for a club, with extended time to train, than it is for a national team. Brazil were unable to get it to work. A struggling midfield — and Brazil’s was most certainly that — benefits immensely from the option of playing up to a centre-forward who can hold on to the ball. Brazil were unable to play their way down the pitch, and when they went long, as they often did with no one to receive, they usually ended up surrendering possession.

But then came the extraordinary rise of Igor Jesus, in yet another remarkable coup for Botafogo’s scouting department. A few months ago, Jesus was a relative unknown playing in the United Arab Emirates. Botafogo signed him in July, and by October he was the national team’s first choice centre-forward. Strong and mobile, he adds all kinds of attacking possibilities. Vinícius is now set to team up with him for the first time, planting the seeds of what could be an important partnership for the national team.

And in an uncharacteristic act of bravado, coach Dorival Junior recently promised that his side will be playing in the 2026 World Cup final. Turning words into deeds will prove much easier if the best Vinícius Júnior in the white of Real Madrid can also show his face and his feet in the famous yellow of Brazil. — Vickery

Vinícius is stellar for Madrid and is reaching his peak. So why has he not yet been able to translate his club form and status into success with Brazil?

MIAMI — Disbelief dawned upon more than 20,000 fans at Chase Stadium on Saturday night when the referee blew the final whistle and ended Inter Miami‘s 2024 MLS season. The favorites to win MLS Cup crashed out of the playoffs in the first round, losing to Atlanta United in the best-of-three series.

How could a team that concluded the regular season in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, with 34 fewer points than Miami, overpower a lineup captained by Lionel Messi and supported by Luis Suárez?

Although Miami’s brilliance in attack often overshadowed the team’s weaknesses, signs of a potential downfall emerged long before Saturday night.

Bitten by the injury bug

Inter Miami saw initial signs of struggle before their 2024 MLS season began in February, with issues emerging during the extensive preseason campaign. Players logged more than 28,000 miles in the air, across three continents, and trained on some questionable surfaces.

“This year I didn’t have [a good preseason] because we had a lot of traveling from one place to another,” Messi said in October. “Which was what the club needed, but it wasn’t a good preseason.”

The weekslong tour of Central America and Asia provided the club with global exposure and gave fans an opportunity to see the Herons, but it came at a cost.

Midfielder Facundo Farías, who contributed three goals and two assists in 11 promising matches after joining Miami in July 2023, suffered an ACL tear during the first preseason friendly against El Salvador. He was ruled out of the entire 2024 campaign before it had even begun.

By March 30, little more than a month into the regular season, Miami had played 15 matches: seven friendlies, six in league play and two in the Concacaf Champions Cup. On that date, Inter had more players listed as unavailable on the league’s injury report (seven) than any other club in MLS.

To that point in the year, eight players (including Messi, Farías, breakout Homegrown star Benjamin Cremaschi, defensive stalwart Serhiy Kryvtsov and Argentina U23 midfielder Federico Redondo) had already missed at least one game through injury and combined for 38 absences.

The injuries stemmed from different issues, but several players experienced exhaustion and muscular burnout after just six weeks of the 2024 season. The calendar hadn’t yet turned to April and the club had already cited “load management” as the reason for some of Messi’s absences.

It didn’t get any better as the campaign unfolded.

Messi, Farías, Redondo and standout 2023 midfield signing Diego Gómez all would miss at least 10 matches through injury. All told, Miami players accumulated 184 matches’ worth of injury absences, with 17 of the 26 players the squad would most count on sitting out at least one game while returning to fitness.

Beyond the obvious day-to-day impact of those absences, the long injury list forced Martino and sporting director Chris Henderson into the transfer market. The two suddenly felt the need to make emergency signings to combat the longtime absences of Farías and Nicolás Freire (ACL), while also muting the immediate dangers of a backline without Kryvtsov and Tomás Avilés, whose availability came and went throughout the season.

Marcelo Weigandt, a figure who saw little time on the pitch with Boca Juniors, joined with the expectation that he would make an instant impact. MLS SuperDraft additions Yannick Bright and Leo Afonso earned contracts and appeared for a combined 1,870 first-team minutes, a scenario that would’ve seemed improbable on draft day considering Inter’s lofty expectations.

“We had to replace important players with two players we selected 60 days ago in a draft,” Martino said in April. “I want to have all my players. The sensation is like I’m chasing after the carrot, ‘Next week we’ll have everyone,’ and [Gómez] falls. ‘Next week we’ll have everyone,’ and it’s someone else. This is what’s happening.”

The rest of the season saw a similar pattern. Martino found short-term fixes to navigate immediate concerns, but those solutions came with long-term consequences.

Although the inclusion of Messi, Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba often masked problems, the team faced a harsh reality: the unbalanced approach to roster construction meant Miami lacked the depth needed for a multi-tournament campaign and generated an overdependence on the former Barcelona quartet.

Inter Miami could not keep up with the demands of the Concacaf Champions Cup, falling to Monterrey in the quarterfinals. Winners of the Leagues Cup last year, the Herons crashed out of the 2024 edition in the round of 16. Then there was the Round 1 capitulation in the MLS Cup playoffs.

Messi, Inter Miami bow out of playoffs in decisive game vs. Atlanta

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are knocked out of the MLS playoffs after a tightly-contested game against Atlanta United.

Miami’s Band-Aid solution to combat their injury absences proved inefficient. The squad’s revolving door of starters generated inconsistency and defensive errors that regularly cost them.

“It’s clear that playing a 34-game tournament allows you things that 90 minutes does not,” Martino said on Saturday night. “The round was then limited to Saturday’s 90 minutes only, and in that time you have to live with mistakes in a different way, there are no new opportunities.”

That’s what played out in the decisive Game 3 against Atlanta. In order to replace an injured Busquets and Bright in midfield — Busquets’ fitness was a topic of concern right up until kickoff — Martino opted for a lineup that forced the attack-minded Redondo to take Busquets’ place at the base of midfield, and winger Matías Rojas into a central role.

Although the players initially managed well, the game plan crumbled once the need for substitutes arose. Suddenly, forward Leo Campana and winger Robert Taylor found themselves in the heart of Miami’s engine room. The Herons’ unbalanced roster manifested itself as a Frankenstein-like 4-3-3 with Suárez and Messi desperately leading a makeshift XI full of players operating out of position.

The final 30 minutes of the contest saw Inter Miami scramble to string passes together as players struggled to establish connections, while Messi and Suárez saw their roles limited by Atlanta. With the two forwards struggling to make an impact, the rest of the team could not step up.

Healthy and at their best, Inter Miami undoubtedly boast the best roster in MLS. The club saw moments of brilliance and beautifully crafted goals that led to the Supporters’ Shield and the record for most points recorded in a single season.

Although the regular season proved forgiving of Miami’s constant injury issues and uncertain lineups, the playoffs were not. In a win-or-go-home situation, the club’s lopsided roster cost them.

Supporting cast comes up short

“We’ve made a lot of mistakes that we can avoid, because many times they were silly mistakes to put it nicely,” Messi said last month. “That cannot happen during the playoffs, because the mistakes can cost you and get you eliminated.”

How prophetic the GOAT’s words proved to be.

Throughout the 2024 season, Miami struggled defensively. The team only managed six clean sheets in 34 games and conceded two or more goals in 12 games. Inter conceded 49 goals across the season, the most by a team that won the Supporters’ Shield since the Seattle Sounders let in 50 in 2014.

The Herons’ impressive attack often masked the deficiencies of the backline, as Messi or Suárez so often saved the day. Messi scored nine goals this season when Inter trailed, while Suárez contributed another four. The rest of the team combined for nine. The pair also netted eight match-winners, accounting for 27% of Miami’s most decisive goals in 2024.

When the greats couldn’t perform, though, the team’s weaknesses came to the fore.

Miami fell to humiliating losses in the absences of Messi and Suárez, like the 4-0 defeat to the New York Red Bulls and the 6-1 hammering at the hands of FC Cincinnati. The Herons also struggled when opponents found a way to limit the production of their No. 9 and No. 10, as evidenced on Saturday night.

Can Miami win it all in Messi’s final season?

The key to winning MLS Cup in 2025 will be found in lessons learned throughout 2024: limiting preseason and more-deliberate roster-building.

The team will participate in several tournaments throughout 2025, including MLS, Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup and the Club World Cup. To navigate those competitions, Miami needs to maximize its depth and get their supporting cast to reach their potential.

The team already announced a friendly against Orlando City SC on Feb. 14 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The Herons cannot afford to wear out players ahead of what looks like a grueling 2025, so no matter how tempting the revenue or exposure may be, the club must learn from this season’s errors.

As for the squad, Henderson and Martino will need to reevaluate the roster and seek out figures that enable options for rotation. The team already boasts game-changing figures, what it needs is experienced supporting players to come in and provide defensive stability to a weakened backline.

Sixteen players’ contracts expire at the end of the year, with 13 possessing an option to extend for a year or two. Óscar Ustari and Ian Fray may see their time with the club come to a close, while Freire’s loan from Pumas in Liga MX is now effectively over.

Suárez has confirmed that his agent is negotiating a contract extension with the team, eliminating the need for Miami to chase down a replacement.

And although the clock is ticking, time isn’t necessarily running out for Messi. The forward’s contract runs through the 2025 season, and although his deal does not include an option for 2026, the door to another season at Inter Miami remains open.

“Well, I actually don’t know how limited [Messi’s time in this league] is,” Martino said on Saturday. “There is a question of time passing but I would not dare to say that it is so short.”

Messi and Busquets, the team’s two Designated Players, and U22 initiative players Cremaschi, Avilés, Farías and Redondo will return under the same contract structure. Inter must address the contract of Emerson Rodriguez, who will be returning from a loan spell at Vasco de Gama but also holds a U22 slot.

Ahead of 2025, Henderson and Martino must seek out reliable center backs, to relieve Busquets of his occasional duties in the backline, and an attacking midfielder ahead of the likely departure of Gómez. The 21-year-old Paraguay international is reportedly close to joining Brighton & Hove Albion this offseason, leaving a sizable hole in the team’s midfield, having played an integral role in 2024 with six goals and seven assists in 2,153 minutes across all competitions.

Further, Miami lacks depth in the right back, attacking midfield and winger positions, and should look to strengthen those areas this winter.

By reinforcing the backline and adding depth across the field, Inter Miami can look to boast one of the most competitive rosters in all of Concacaf. With a more considered preseason and strengthened squad, the team should be able to balance the multi-tournament demands of the upcoming season and defy expectations across competitions.

Another Messi trophy lift may not be far off, but the Herons must take the appropriate steps to reach the ultimate goal.
