Atlanta United FC eliminated CF Montréal 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout on Tuesday night in the opening game of the MLS Cup playoffs after the two clubs played to a 2-2 draw.

Atlanta won its second road playoff game in club history and the first since Nov. 4, 2018 at New York City FC.

United will start a best-of-three series on Friday against Supporters’ Shield winner Inter Miami CF, which is hosting a playoff game for the first time in club history.

Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan denied Tom Pearce on Montreal’s second attempt in the shootout. Saba Lobjanidze sealed it for United.

Atlanta led 2-0 at halftime before former United star Josef Martínez scored two second-half goals to tie it.

Brooks Lennon scored his first goal of the season when he headed in a beautiful cross from Pedro Amador in the 29th minute. Atlanta defender Stian Gregersen made it 2-0 in the 44th by heading in Alexey Miranchuk‘s free kick.

Martínez pulled Montreal within 2-1 in the 63rd with an easy tap-in after Guzan spilled a long shot.

Montreal was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th and Martínez converted for his eighth goal in the last six games. Martínez and his former goalkeeper Guzan exchanged a few words after the goal.

Flick: Barcelona-Bayern about more than Lewandowski vs. Kane (1:33)Barcelona boss Hansi Flick says Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich will be decided by more than the performances of Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane. (1:33)

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has said he had some nerves before making his first Clásico appearance against Real Madrid last season ahead of this weekend’s showdown between LaLiga’s top two (live on ESPN+ at 3 p.m. ET).

Yamal, who was still 16 at the time, came off the bench in the 76th minute at the Olympic Stadium as Barça were beaten 2-1 by Madrid last October.

The 17-year-old’s rise to the top of the game for club and country over the last year has been marked by his cool-headedness, but he said there was some tension when it came to facing Los Blancos for the first time.

“I have never been nervous in a game to be honest, but when I came on for my Clásico debut, there were some nerves,” he told LaLiga World ahead of Saturday’s match at the Bernabéu.

“I saw the faces of the opponents and how good they were. And just as I was coming on, there were a few nerves, but when I got on that was it, I forgot about everything. I played and I enjoyed it.

“You see the quality there is in these matches. In the end, they are decided by the small details. Clásicos are always special. It is the Clásico and we all want to win it.”

Yamal’s career has gone from strength to strength since then. He helped Spain win the European Championship in the summer and has already made over 60 appearances for Barça’s first team.

During that time he has broken various records for precocity, becoming the youngest goal scorer for Barça and Spain, while also breaking several appearance and goal-scoring records at the Euros.

“I don’t usually think about it much, but now that I am saying it, yes, there are many things that make you very happy and I hope there are more to come,” he added of all his records.

As a result of his performances, his public profile in Spain has soared, with his No.19 Barcelona shirt one of the club’s biggest sellers.

“I was already more or less aware of it when I made my debut, but this summer was the boom I think because now you go to the airport and you see people wearing my shirt,” he said.

“You go around Barcelona and there are a lot of people [wearing my shirt]. My mum tells me that when she takes my brother to school, they are at the bus stop with the typical posters and I am on them. I am living a dream.”

Yamal’s next challenge is to leave his mark on the Clásico, where he is expected to come up against Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy as Barça look to increase their three-point lead at the top of the table.

He leads LaLiga in attempted take ons this season with 82 — 10 more than the second-ranked Vinícius Júnior — and will look to grow that number by running at Mendy this weekend.

“This year, when I receive the ball, I feel the crowd start to shout and that really motivates me,” he said.

“I just look at the full-back and I go for him with everything. It’s a feeling I have never had before. It’s as if my mum’s in front of me telling me to go at the opponent. I can’t describe the feeling, but it’s incredible.

“I do whatever I feel is right in the moment. In the end, I go up against my marker and it’s like my legs do things on their own sometimes. I don’t think about what I am going to do.”

Carlo Ancelotti praised Vinícius Júnior‘s “extraordinary character” and “energy” after the Ballon d’Or contender scored a second-half hat trick in Real Madrid‘s 5-2 Champions League comeback win over Borussia Dortmund.

Madrid trailed 0-2 at halftime at the Bernabéu — after Donyell Malen and Jamie Gittens scored for the visitors — before goals from Antonio Rüdiger, Vinícius and Lucas Vázquez put the European champions in front.

Brazil international Vinicius scored two more goals to complete his hat trick and leave Madrid in a positive mood ahead of Saturday’s Clásico against Barcelona.

“It’s unusual for a player to have a second half like he did,” Ancelotti said in his post-match news conference. “He played with energy and intensity, with extraordinary character.”

Vinicius’ hat trick came less than a week before the winner of the 2024 men’s Ballon d’Or will be confirmed at a ceremony in Paris.

“I think [Vinicius] will win it, but not because of what he did tonight,” Ancelotti said. “It will be because of what he did last season. The three goals tonight will help him win the next Ballon d’Or!”

“We know that at home, with our fans, anything can happen,” Vinicius told Movistar. “When we got to the dressing room [at halftime] we were very quiet, we just listened to the boss.. And he said one thing: if we score the first goal, we’re going to come back. And we did it.”

“It’s something you feel sometimes on the pitch,” goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois — who made five saves in the game — said. “I don’t want to say that you feel the opponent’s fear, but you feel that after the first goal, with the stadium, we’ll score goals.”

Ancelotti criticised his team’s attitude in the first half, but said they had delivered “our best second half this season.”

“We started the first half without much intensity,” he said. “We were too timid. We can play with more energy, taking risks.”

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo exited the match in the 85th minute with a muscle injury and he is doubtful to face Barcelona next Saturday.

Vinícius Júnior has made the declaration that he wants to stay at Real Madrid “forever” amid ongoing reports linking him with a move to Saudi Pro League.

The Brazil forward, who is the favourite to lift the Ballon d’Or award on Oct. 28, has been the subject of interest from Saudi clubs.

Sources told ESPN in August that Vinícius would wait until the end of this season before deciding whether to pursue a move away from Madrid.

However, after scoring a second-half hat trick in Madrid’s 5-2 comeback victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday, he made clear his desire to remain at the club if possible.

“I’m still only 24,” Vinícius said. “I want to stay here forever and contribute as much as possible to this team, which has given me everything since I arrived here.”

The hat trick against Dortmund was his first in the Champions League, although Vinícius played down his heroics.

“[Real Madrid coach Carlo] Ancelotti told me to keep it up, that I can always do more,” he said. “But we have to improve and play like this from the off, otherwise the coach won’t be able to take it.

“This is our competition and we want to win it again.”

Vinícius scored 24 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions last season for LaLiga champions Madrid, including his team’s second goal when they won the Champions League final win against Dortmund in June.

Lucas Vázquez, who captained Madrid on Tuesday, hailed Vinícius’ latest showing.

“Vini Jr. had an unbelievable second half,” Vázquez said. “It’s one to show the kids so they understand how football should be played, with that intensity and the hunger to go after the goals. He’s shown yet again that he’s the most decisive player in the world, he had an unbelievable second half.”

Madrid director Emilio Butragueño applauded Vinícius and compared him to Brazil legend Pelé.

Asked about Vinicius’ third goal against Dortmund, the former Spain forward said: “It reminded me of Pele. It is a magnificent goal. The way he ran, the way he faked to dribble past the defender. A magnificent goal. For those of us that love football, it justifies you coming here to the Bernabéu [Stadium] and that a player can offer that play that provokes a lot of emotion, including admiration.”

Meanwhile, Vinícius is looking forward to LaLiga’s Clásico against Barcelona on Saturday.

Madrid are three points behind league leaders Barça.

“We’re going all out,” Vinícius said. “It’s on home turf with our fans. We’re going to fight for everything this season, as always.”

UEFA has confirmed that Madrid or Baku will stage the 2027 Champions League final after the capital cities of Spain and Azerbaijan stepped in to replace Milan as host of the showpiece fixture.

Having stripped Milan of the hosting rights last month due to the Italian city’s failure to deliver assurances that the San Siro — home stadium of AC Milan and Inter Milan — would be in a fit state to stage the game due to possible reconstruction work, UEFA re-opened the bidding process for the right to provide the venue for the biggest club game in European football and two cities — Madrid and Azerbaijan — have now applied to UEFA to host the 2027 final.

2 Related

Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano, the home of Atletico Madrid, has been submitted by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) as a potential venue. The Metropolitano has previously staged one Champions League final in 2019, when Liverpool defeated Tottenham to win the competition for a sixth time.

Real Madrid’s Bernabéu has also staged the European Cup or Champions League final on four occasions — the most recent in 2010.

Azerbaijan has never staged a Champions League final and would be easternmost venue in the competition’s history. Baku’s Olympic Stadium, Azerbaijan’s submission for the 2027 final, staged games at Euro 2020 and also hosted the 2019 Europa League final when Chelsea defeated Arsenal to lift the trophy.

UEFA will announce the confirmed venue in May 2025. Munich’s Allianz Arena (2025) and Budapest’s Puskas Arena (2026) have already been confirmed as host stadiums for the next two Champions League finals.

Meanwhile, Warsaw’s National Stadium, Barcelona’s Camp Nou, St. Jakob Park in Basel, Switzerland, and the Principality Stadium in Cardiff have all submitted bids to host the 2027 Women’s Champions League final.

There’s one trophy Lionel Messi won’t win in MLS: the Wooden Spoon, a fan award given to the league’s worst team. Here’s the story behind its creation. There’s one trophy Lionel Messi won’t win in MLS: the Wooden Spoon, a fan award given to the league’s worst team. Here’s the story behind its creation.

Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami teammates have already secured MLS‘ Supporters’ Shield, and they’re currently the heavy MLS Cup favorites in the playoffs, but even the demigod of soccer himself will miss out on one trophy this season: The Wooden Spoon.

Conceptualized, created and maintained by die-hard fans, the trophy is managed by the Independent Supporters Council (ISC), a collective of groups from the U.S. and Canada that hand the annual award to the supporters of the team with the worst finish in MLS.

Some fans hate it. Others embrace it and flip the narrative, because after all, a title is a title and the two-foot piece of lumber is a handy symbol of accountability in a league without relegation. At the league level, a representative from MLS confirmed to ESPN that they have no role in the trophy, thereby making it an unofficial one.

A bittersweet icon with layers of meaning behind it, here’s the story of the Wooden Spoon trophy.

‘Why did you make this?’

Imagine being a supporter of the Chicago Fire in 2017. You’re trying to move on from your team’s back-to-back last place finishes from the previous two years, and as you’re sipping a beer at a tailgate and basking in the aspirations of a new season, you see someone carrying a visually imposing wooden structure towards you.

As a strange homemade trophy comes into light, you see two golden plaques on it commemorating the recent disastrous seasons that you’re trying to forget, and a cracked wooden spoon centered in the middle.

The Wooden Spoon trophy is a fan-led effort to keep MLS teams accountable for poor seasons and express supporter dissatisfaction in a league with no relegation. Daniel Giroux

Daniel Giroux, the creator of the Wooden Spoon trophy, remembers some comments made by fellow Chicago Fire fans — Why did you make this? You’re bringing shame to our team. — when they first laid eyes upon it.

“This was meant to look cheap…[it] looks the part of being the bottom place trophy,” Giroux, who now works for the University of Nevada’s department of art, art history and design, said. “I wanted to keep it as simple as possible, while also being so big and obtrusive you couldn’t not see it.”

So why make such a thing? It stems back to a 2016 decision from the ISC, who also overlook the Supporters’ Shield trophy that Messi clinched this season.

“It [the Wooden Spoon] was created as a way to bring attention to issues to hopefully have another accountability piece for our clubs. We don’t have relegation in MLS, so how can we make clubs care if they are settling for the minimum,” said Bailey Brown, current president of the ISC that took part in the group’s 2016 conference.

Due to the Chicago Fire’s position in last, the team’s supporters agreed to make the trophy, one that was intended to convey the frustrations of the Fire’s failures. Giroux, then working at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was the perfect choice given his role as the go-to craftsman for Section 8, an association of supporters’ groups for the Chicago Fire.

“It is made of 90% plywood, wood glue, malort [a famous Chicago-based liquor] and hatred,” once said Giroux to Switch The Pitch.

“I probably went through about five wooden spoons before I got the one on there to actually work. They kept shattering,” said Giroux with a laugh. “[I] experimented which way is actually going to work for nailing it onto the damn thing because they’re so cheap, they just shatter at the core. That one’s probably like spoon number six that you actually see.”

A poignant final touch can be found at the base of the trophy. In order to properly highlight the mismanagement of the Chicago Fire, an additional plaque selected the trophy name as the “Andrew Hauptman Memorial Spoon,” thereby shaming the now-former owner of the club. Despite the trophy being intended as a representation of fan dissatisfaction, it became a celebrity of sorts, often showing up at tailgates.

“It was kind of celebratory,” said Nicole Hack, a former chair of Section 8 who is now co-vice president of the ISC. “We took something that was really unfortunate and really sad with what was happening with our team and we kind of embraced what was going on.”

Just as importantly, supporters would also occasionally bring it to club events, where they knew Chicago Fire staff would be present.

“We definitely made a point to try to bring it to as many of those as possible,” said Giroux. “It’s lighthearted, but it’s also kind of meant as a shaming thing and an empowering thing, right? Like, hey, we’re taking this seriously.”

The mysticism of the Spoon

As opposed to the pomp and circumstance of Messi lifting the Supporters’ Shield with tens of thousands in attendance in Miami last Saturday, the passing of the Wooden Spoon is often in the main hall of a hotel or conference center during the ISC’s annual meeting in January. In front of the entire Council and with a microphone in hand, the group giving it away typically gives a quick address and then hands it to receiving supporters.

“There is normally a humorous vibe in the acceptance of it,” said Bailey. “People give speeches if they want, but it’s quite often one of those moments where the season had been so bad that people laugh and say, ‘At least we won something.'”

Locations can vary though, such as when the Vancouver Whitecaps‘ supporters hosted the conference and brought everyone to BC Place stadium for the annual meeting.

“[They] gave us a full tour of the stadium and let us walk on the pitch for a bit,” reminisced Giroux.

The passing of the Wooden Spoon trophy from one fan group to the next typically takes place in January of each year, at a conference organized by the Independent Supporters Council. Daniel Giroux

With the Chicago Fire fanbase, there was a sense of ownership and care for the trophy they created, but what happens when it’s sent to another group who have no connection to it?

“On of the podcasts at one time, I’m like, listen, if the [LA] Galaxy end up winning this Wooden Spoon, then you know what, give it to me and I’ll put it on the podcast and it’ll be on the podcast every single week,” said Josh Guesman, host of the Corner of the Galaxy, to ESPN. “Members of the supporters groups heard that. I didn’t plan on them hearing it,” said Guesman.

With a spot in last in 2017 for the LA Galaxy, the supporters decided that Guesman’s show would be a perfect home for the trophy, which was then renamed as the “Anthony Precourt Memorial Wooden Spoon” in order to shame the former Columbus Crew owner who had been trying to relocate the team.

Every day as he walked into his office, and during the background of each episode of his podcast in 2018, Guesman shared a space with the trophy. “This is the failure of the organization and the organization would like nothing better than [for it] to go away.” Some supporters wanted nothing to do with it either.

While covering a reserve game for the LA Galaxy in 2018, Guesman remembers a fan aggressively approaching him — You need to get that Wooden Spoon off the podcast. — about the trophy.

Guesman disagreed. He noted to the fan that the trophy was a reminder of the team’s missteps, and that if things didn’t change, setbacks would continue going forward with LA Galaxy.

“The guy literally got angry…I thought maybe I might have to fight,” said Guesman with a laugh. “I get the reaction, it’s not that I don’t get the reaction. I think it’s a little extreme but he was really upset that it was on every single podcast,” said the host. “I think that’s what the Wooden Spoon is, it’s a reminder not to be bad at what you do.”

When Guesman brought the trophy back to LA Galaxy supporters at the end of the 2018 season, there were visceral responses ranging from individuals who didn’t want to touch it, others who lifted middle fingers, some who took photos, and also those who were astounded to be in the presence of it.

“People were like, ‘oh my God, that’s it, that’s the Wooden Spoon.’ “

When FC Cincinnati finished dead last from 2019-2021, supporters learned to appreciate the Wooden Spoon with each passing season.

“Obviously we are disappointed with the results on the field, but I think the fan base has embraced having the Spoon for the third time, second officially,” said Jared Handra, president of FC Cincinnati supporter group Die Innenstadt, to the ISC’s website in 2021. “People just have fun with it now, it’s pretty cool to win a trophy three years in a row.

“We wanted to win trophies; I guess it’s on us for not specifying which one.”

‘The trophy should be shared’

Due to the complicated feelings of the object itself, or simply not wanting to acknowledge it, the Wooden Spoon can also go into hiding.

When the San Jose Earthquakes were given the trophy in 2019 (due to their 2018 last place finish), the Wooden Spoon was nowhere to be seen by fans that season. According to Crystal Cuadra-Cutler, president of The Faultline supporter group, the leader of a separate and now defunct group “just held on to the trophy and updated the plaques on it” without bringing it out in public.

For die-hard supporters that commit an endless amount of time to their clubs — and in a country in which MLS is often glanced over — it may not be easy to take things on the chin.

“We were not aware of the trophy, until someone from the ISC reached out about DC [United] trying to get the trophy sent to us,” said Peter Pakatchian, president of Toronto FC supporter group Red Patch Boys, to ESPN.

Pakatchian and the Red Patch Boys offered it to Toronto FC as a source of inspiration earlier this season, but were turned down. At the moment, the trophy is currently sitting in a storage locker until it’s passed onto the next group for 2025.

“The group and many other groups did not want to do anything with it,” said Pakatchian.

In 2024, no team had a more difficult time than the San Jose Earthquakes, who finished with a paltry total of 21 points. In comparison, Messi’s Miami finished with 74 in the regular season. Phillip Leyva, who covers the San Jose Earthquakes as a member of Quakes Epicenter, remembered a moment back in the summer that foreshadowed problems.

“This was early, like this was June 22, this was early in the season, [forward] Benji [Kikanovic] came into the news conference and he said ‘We’re s—.’ That’s the word that he used,” said Leyva to ESPN. “‘We’re not playing good enough, this is s—.’ I just remember he kept repeating that.”

According to Leyva, issues like injuries and the team’s mentality held the squad back. He also noted “a dearth of MLS level quality in the defensive part of the pitch, across the back line and especially at the goalkeeper position — they’re just leaking in goals.” Looking at the investment of the team, which has the four-lowest total guaranteed compensation in MLS, Leyva doesn’t expect things to get significantly better in the future.

“A lot of that comes down to the ownership, I think that’s the one important thing that you should probably mention,” said Leyva. “If you haven’t already thought about it, the extent to which John Fisher affects this organization.”

One month before the San Jose Earthquakes officially closed out the regular season in last place, Fisher’s other team, MLB’s Oakland A’s, played their very last in the Bay Area just up the highway. Furious with Fisher’s plan to move the team to Las Vegas, baseball fans belted chants of “sell the team” with the knowledge that their owner would soon steal a part of their sporting hearts.

Sports fandom can sometimes feel futile and hopeless in the face of these situations. Yet supporters do have the power of expression to help push for change or improvements to be made.

“If supporters want to put pressure on their front office to do better, then this is a reminder,” said Hack about the Wooden Spoon. “We also have to be the voices to put pressure on our organizations.”

Giroux agrees. “It was kind of intended as a satirical object,” he said. “This idea of building something to criticize and make light of something serious that’s actually happening.”

So what’s next for the Wooden Spoon?

“I think that the trophy should be shared. The trophy is usually presented at the annual ISC conference in January and I will be bringing it back to San Jose. My group already plans to have the trophy at a few events next preseason,” the Faultline’s Cuadra-Cutler said.

“We plan to just embrace and own it.”

Liverpool‘s injury issues continue to mount with striker Diogo Jota added to an already lengthy list of absentees ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League game at RB Leipzig, manager Arne Slot said on Tuesday.

Jota was forced off the pitch after 30 minutes of Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Chelsea with right back Conor Bradley missing the game entirely due to injury.

Liverpool were already without goalkeeper Alisson Becker, forward Federico Chiesa and midfielder Harvey Elliott through injury, none of whom have travelled to Germany for Wednesday’s match.

“Conor Bradley, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, and Alisson didn’t make the trip so we have a few issues at the moment,” Slot told reporters.

“Diogo got a knock when he was trying to go to goal, he was brought down but the other player fell on to him, and that hurt him and he couldn’t continue to play and come with us.

“It is difficult to judge at this moment of time to see how long it’s going to take.”

Liverpool have won both their fixtures in Europe this season, while Wednesday’s opponents have lost their opening two encounters in the new-look competition that features a 36-team league rather than four-team groups.

Slot, however, said it was too early to judge how teams were doing as the “league table doesn’t tell the whole story.”

“The concept of the Champions League [as far as] I got my head around it — I don’t think you can have a fair opinion yet because we are only two games into the Champions League now,” Slot said.

“We’ve to wait and see what the result of this format is and you can only judge that after the group stages are done.”

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany says it is exceptional that Barcelona have potentially found a Lionel Messi replacement in Lamine Yamal so soon after the Argentine left the club.

Messi, now at Inter Miami, left Barça in 2021, with Yamal, a left-footed attacker who plays on the right, emerging from the academy to make his first team debut as a 15-year-old in 2023.

The 17-year-old has since played over 60 times for Barça, scoring five goals and providing six assists in 12 appearances this season, and helped Spain win the European Championships in the summer, earning comparisons with Messi along the way.

“It’s exceptional for Barça as a club [to have Yamal] so shortly after the departure of a player like Messi,” Kompany said in a news conference ahead of the meeting between the two sides in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“For my generation, Messi was one of the key figures of our era. To shortly after this player leaving already have potentially a player who can replace him is quite unique.

“Full credit to [Barça’s academy] La Masia for always trusting these players and giving them the chance. But the question for us is not about stopping [Yamal], but trying to win a game against Barcelona, which means [stopping] all the players, not one.

“The focus is on the team, not one player, but he’s an exceptional player.”

Yamal is one of two 17-year-olds who starts regularly for Barça. The other is centre-back Pau Cubarsí, who also drew a rave review from Kompany, a former centre-back himself with Manchester City.

“He’s one of the future defensive leaders in world football for sure,” the Belgian coach said when asked for his opinion on Cubarsí.

“I was lucky to start my career very young, at a similar age, but to play every game at this level, not just representing Barça, but against this level of competition in a top five league and the Champions League, it’s very special, very rare.

“He’s already a good player and if he can hopefully stay fit he will have a wonderful career.”

Kompany, who joined Bayern from Burnley in the summer, has made a good start to his career in Bavaria. His team are unbeaten and top of the Bundesliga, although they lost their last Champions League game at Aston Villa.

Wednesday’s game at the Olympic Stadium provides the latest test to his managerial credentials against a Barça side coached by ex-Bayern boss Hansi Flick, who won the treble during his time in charge of the German club.

“Hansi was not just a coach at Bayern, he was a very successful coach, a person that represented the club in a way that is still spoken about today,” Kompany said.

“He means a lot for Bayern and I am sure this game means a lot for him. But the duel is on the pitch. Hansi’s ideas are very clear; I hope ours are as well.”

Speaking prior to Kompany, Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich refused to rule out a move to Barça next summer when his contract expires, instead revealing the impact the Catalan club had on him when he was younger.

“It’s always special to play against Barcelona,” the German international said. “Of course I have seen my name linked with Barça in the past, but it’s not a special game for that reason, simply because they’re a huge club.

“They’ve had success in the past and, along with the Spanish national team that won three trophies in a row, they’re a club that have left a mark on me. Xavi [Hernández] was my idol when I was younger and Pep Guardiola and his Barça side also had a big influence on me.”

Asked to give a direct answer on if he could join Barça next summer, he added: “In football you can never make the mistake of ruling things out. To respond directly to you, I am not thinking of that right now, but you can never rule things out in life or in football.”

Three straight wins, no goals conceded and top of the league on maximum points.

Aston Villa‘s first ever appearance in the Champions League couldn’t be going any better.

Villa’s 2-0 home win over Bologna on Tuesday maintained the 100% start to the English team’s first campaign in Europe’s top club competition since 1983 — when it was called the European Cup, which Villa won in 1982.

And they don’t want the dream start to end here.

“What we are building here is amazing,” said Villa captain John McGinn, one of the scorers against Bologna at a rocking Villa Park. “Three games in, three wins and most important for us is no goals conceded.

“We don’t want to stop here. It puts us in a great position. Some players came back and now we look really strong.”

Villa opened with a 3-0 win at Swiss outsiders Young Boys and then beat German giants Bayern Munich 1-0 in their first home game of the revamped competition.

Halfway through the third round of league games, Villa are in first place and no other team has nine points.

“We are playing seriously, we are playing focused, responsible and the team is progressing and mature in everything,” said Villa manager Unai Emery, who took charge two years ago with the team just above the relegation zone.

Key this season has been the form of Jhon Durán, the 20-year-old Colombia international who is enjoying his breakthrough year at Villa.

Duran was handed a rare start against Bologna ahead of first-choice striker Ollie Watkins and was about to be replaced by his fellow centre-forward when he hooked home a volley in the 64th minute from Morgan Rogers‘ cross.

Watkins was on the sideline waiting to come on and was seen applauding the goal by Duran, who now has seven for the season in 12 games — mostly as a substitute. One of them was a memorable long-range winner against Bayern.

Duran looked livid when he stomped to the bench but Emery brushed off any issue between them.

“When he was watching that I was thinking of changing him, he accelerated and scored a goal,” Emery said, laughing. “It was fantastic. He was asking for more [time] because he was thinking he could score more goals.”

Mikel Arteta fears Riccardo Calafiori could join Arsenal’s mounting injury list but vowed the Gunners “will be flying” against Liverpool on Sunday.

Calafiori limped out of Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk at Emirates Stadium 18 minutes from the end after falling awkwardly on his right leg.

The Italian defender, a £42 million summer signing from Bologna, will be assessed in the coming days but Arteta admitted the initial signs were not promising.

“With Riccy he had to come off because he felt something,” said Arteta. “I don’t know the extent of it so in that sense not great news. He could not continue playing so, a bit of a worry.”

Arteta also said it was “unlikely” Bukayo Saka would be available to face Premier League leaders Liverpool this weekend as he battles a hamstring problem while Martin Ødegaard (ankle) and Jurriën Timber (muscular issue) are also major doubts.

With William Saliba suspended following his red card at Bournemouth, Arteta could resort to using midfielder Thomas Partey at right back in a reshuffled defence after a subdued display against Shakhtar in which goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk scored an unfortunate 29th-minute own goal to settle the game.

“I was expecting a bit of a drop off,” said Arteta. “And the fact that we put so much in the first half and didn’t get the distance in terms of the scoreline, I think we paid a bit for that.

“Then we made life more difficult for us because we started give the ball away in not the right areas and then it was more open. That didn’t help. But we have now four days. Believe me, on Sunday we’ll be flying.

“We’ll review, have a day off, then two days to prepare the game. Sunday is far and we are more than comfortable that we’ll be in the right place.”

Ben White was substituted at half-time but Arteta said that decision was due to a desire to avoid a fourth red card for his team this season after the defender picked up a 34th-minute yellow card.

“Ben, it was my decision to take him out,” added Arteta. “He had a yellow card and we’ve played enough with 10 men in recent periods. They had a lot of density on that side, a lot of players on that side, so I didn’t want to take any chances there.”

Christian Pulisic continued his sensational start to the season on Tuesday, scoring directly from a corner in AC Milan‘s 3-1 UEFA Champions League win against Belgium’s Club Brugge.

The United States star opened the scoring in the 34th minute at the San Siro, sending in an inswinging corner from the left that deceived the goalkeeper and defenders and somehow missed everyone before bouncing into the net beyond the despairing attempted clearance on the goal line.

The effort was the first “Olimpico” goal of Pulisic’s career and took him to 10 goal contributions in his past 10 games for club and country. It was also the 26-year-old’s second goal in three Champions League games this season, after scoring in Milan’s opening defeat to Liverpool last month.

After Tuesday’s goal, Pulisic raised his arms up and smiled broadly before being embraced by his teammates, as he laughed seeming incredulous. And he later admitted the goal had an element of fortune.

“Today it was a bit of luck but it’s still worth a goal. I’m very happy,” a laughing Pulisic said in Italian. “I didn’t try to do that but it was a good cross, I’ll say that, and after a nice, nice goal but I wasn’t trying that.”

In Serie A, Pulisic has scored five goals and added three assists in eight games this campaign. He also registered an assist in Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge of the USMNT, against Panama earlier this month.

“I work hard every day. I always want to be decisive in matches,” he said. “I’m very happy this year, I’m getting a lot of goals and assists, but it’s not always like that. So I’ll continue like this and hope to continue scoring.”

Belgium’s Brugge had to play most of Tuesday’s game with 10 men after Raphael Onyedika was sent off in the 40th minute but still leveled the score with a goal from Kyriani Sabbe in the 51st.

Tijjani Reijnders later scored twice to give Milan a much-needed first win in this season’s Champions League, having also lost to Bayer Leverkusen.

There was a late scare — and coach Paulo Fonseca certainly looked concerned —when Pulisic had to be helped off late after taking a knock to his knee but the 26-year-old was able to return and almost doubled his tally.

Sixteen-year-old Francesco Camarda was brought on in the 75th minute and became the youngest Italian debutant in the Champions League. He briefly thought he had broken the record for youngest Champions League scorer too, but his header was ruled offside to halt joyous celebrations.

Barcelona forward Raphinha has said he was hurt by some of the speculation surrounding the club’s interest in signing Nico Williams in the summer, labelling it disrespectful and in bad taste.

Barça’s pursuit of the Athletic Club and Spain winger raised questions about Raphinha’s future, with one photograph of a fan wearing a Williams shirt with the Brazilian’s No. 11 on the back going viral during the transfer window.

Raphinha — who has subsequently started the season in fine form, and is in line to make his 100th Barça appearance against Bayern Munich on Wednesday — has admitted he was irked by certain things during the summer.

“I saw those [posts] with the shirt on Instagram,” he said in a news conference on Tuesday ahead of the Bayern game. “I thought it was a joke in bad taste and it was disrespectful.

“People need to respect the players that are here. We’re here giving our best and fighting for the club. To see a photo like that wasn’t very nice for me, I took it as a lack of respect.

“Of course, people are free to do what they want, but I did feel a little hurt in that moment.”

Raphinha’s response has been to up his game on the pitch. Under Hansi Flick, he has found his best form since joining the club from Leeds United in 2022, scoring six goals and providing six assists in 12 appearances in all competitions.

Playing from the left or more centrally, as opposed to on the right wing, he was named LaLiga’s Player of the Month for August. He has even worn the captain’s armband at times, but he insisted the summer speculation is not behind his improvement.

“It wasn’t an added motivator to start the season in the way I did,” he added. “I was anxious to give my best for the club. Seeing how many years of my contract I have here [until 2027], it was a crucial point.

“I started the season knowing to play here I have to adapt to different positions and a different style of play. In the past I gave 100%; now I give 200% and I’m always willing to do that for this club.

Raphinha was speaking at Barcelona’s news conference on Tuesday. JOSEP LAGO/AFP via Getty Images

“[It has been] part mental and part tactical, but also it’s very important for me to have the confidence of the coach and my teammates. My mentality at the beginning of the season was different from other years — I knew I had to adapt to a new position to play here.”

Raphinha is not the only player to improve under Flick, with Barça winning 10 of their 12 games under the German coach this season, but they will be tested this week against Bayern and Real Madrid, who they travel to on Saturday in LaLiga for the first Clásico of the campaign.

Bayern arrive at the Olympic Stadium on the back of a six-game winning streak against Barça, including an 8-2 victory when Flick was in the Bayern dugout in 2020.

However, Flick is not concerned by the past as he prepares for a “special” reunion with the team he led to a treble in 2019-20 before taking the Germany national team job in 2021.

“The past doesn’t matter,” he said in the news conference when asked about the 8-2 specifically. “The here and now is what’s important. We can’t influence what happened in the past, but we can prepare well for tomorrow.

“Of course it’s a special game in this case against Bayern. I played there and I coached there. I have a lot of acquaintances there, players and also people within the management structure.

“It was a great time in my career and I have great memories, but I am in another chapter now here at Barça and I am very happy here.”

The matchup pits the LaLiga leaders against the Bundesliga leaders, with Flick complimenting the work done so far by new coach Vincent Kompany.

“Bayern are in very good shape,” he said. “Kompany and his coaching team are doing an outstanding job, pressing opponents, brave with the ball and imposing their style on teams. It will be a tough task for us.”

Barça and Bayern both have three points from two games in the Champions League this season, increasing the need for both teams to win the game this week.

Gavi, Frenkie de Jong, Fermín López and Dani Olmo are all fit again for Barça, although it remains to be seen if any of them are ready to start the game, with Eric García and long-term absentees Marc-André ter Stegen, Ronald Araújo, Andreas Christensen, Marc Bernal and Ferran Torres all missing out.

How Vinicius Junior led Real Madrid’s stunning comeback (2:00)The “ESPN FC” crew laud Vinicius Junior after his hat trick inspires Real Madrid to a 5-2 win over Borussia Dortmund having trailed 2-0 at halftime. (2:00)

MADRID — “Our crown, our trophy,” read the banner, held up by fans behind the Santiago Bernabeu’s south goal before kickoff.

Real Madrid are the reigning European champions, the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners, and, of course, the comeback kings, as they showed once again in this unpredictable, wildly entertaining 5-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.

This is a strange Madrid team, full of elite players, but often malfunctioning as a unit. They flirted with embarrassment against Dortmund before they decided to play the hits, and turn the game around, roared on by the Bernabeu crowd.

In the first half, they were poor: fragile in defence, non-existent in midfield and hesitant in attack. In the second half, they looked like an unstoppable force of nature, led by the irrepressible Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian scored a hat trick, in what’s a contender for his career-best performance to date. This was Ballon d’Or-worthy. By the end of this month, he might have one.

In the old Champions League format, Madrid never failed to qualify from the group stage, ever. Here, they faced a real risk of starting the new league phase with two defeats in three games. Their 1-0 loss at Lille on matchday two could have been dismissed as an anomaly — Madrid created nine chances there, with an xG (expected goals) of 2.18, but lost 1-0 — but Tuesday’s first-half performance, going 2-0 down to Dortmund and conceding twice in four minutes, made it look more like a trend.

Madrid have not been playing well this season, but they’ve still been winning games, and are unbeaten in LaLiga. There was optimism, excitement and expectation ahead of kickoff here, the feeling of a big European tie, and a repeat of last season’s Wembley final. The atmosphere generated by Dortmund’s thousands of travelling fans helped. Midway through the first half, their coordinated, mass bouncing had the desks in the Bernabeu press box moving gently up and down, all the way across the stadium. On the pitch, their team gave them every reason to jump up and down.

Donyell Malen‘s opening goal after 31 minutes was well worked, a team move that ended with Malen on the ball, in space, in front of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Three minutes later, Malen crossed for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to score Dortmund’s second, sprinting past a dozing Lucas Vázquez at the far post.

It didn’t take long for Madrid to spark into life, Rodrygo — back in the XI here in his favourite competition after three consecutive games on the bench — and Jude Bellingham both hitting the woodwork within seconds of each other. But then it was Dortmund who again came closest to adding a third before the break, Courtois saving at full stretch from Julian Brandt.

The Bernabeu crowd whistled their team off the pitch at halftime, their pride stung. In the second half, a reaction felt almost inevitable. It arrived in the 60th minute when Antonio Rüdiger‘s powerful header from Kylian Mbappé‘s cross made it 2-1, before Vinícius made it 2-2 minutes later, after a nervous wait for an on-field offside call to be overturned.

Then, Madrid had to wait. They pushed for a winner, as Dortmund tried to hang on, and occasionally threaten, if they could, on the break. When it came, Madrid’s third goal arrived from Vazquez, before a breathtaking late double from Vinícius left the result in no doubt. By the final whistle, Madrid’s poor first half felt like a distant memory, the win ultimately so comfortable, so overwhelming, that what came before it could almost be dismissed as an irrelevance.

Vinícius carried the match ball off the pitch and will take the headlines as the game’s outstanding player. As preparation for Saturday’s El Clásico against Barcelona in LaLiga, it doesn’t get much better, even if Madrid’s first-half shortcomings suggest there are still plenty of reasons for concern.

The nature of this new Champions League format, with only 12 of the 36 teams being eliminated after the league phase, means that even with a defeat, Madrid might well have qualified for the knockout phase anyway. And it’s worth remembering that they weren’t immune to the occasional group stage slip-up — remember Moldova’s Sheriff Tiraspol winning 2-1 at the Bernabeu in 2021? Madrid went on to lift the Champions League that season.

But in the end, there was no slip-up here. There was business as usual. After this second half, Madrid will be talked about as being among the favourites to win the competition again in 2025. And with Vinicius in this kind of unplayable form, it’s hard to argue.

Thousands of Valencia fans protested against owner Peter Lim and the reported detention of two fans in Lim’s home country of Singapore before and after its 3-2 loss to Las Palmas in LaLiga on Monday.

Dani Cuesta and his wife were detained in Singapore almost three weeks ago after Cuesta reportedly held up anti-Lim signs.

Valencia fans have been protesting Lim’s management of their club for years.

The millionaire businessman bought Valencia in 2014 but supporters have been angered by what they feel is his absentee ownership, and thousands rallied outside Mestalla Stadium before the game.

Thousands more returned after a defeat that left Valencia bottom of La Liga with just one win in 10 matches.

The game started well for the home side with Pepelu putting Valencia ahead from the penalty spot after 14 minutes.

But Alex Muñoz equalized for Las Palmas three minutes before halftime and on-loan Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Fábio Silva put it 2-1 ahead seven minutes into the second period.

Pepelu was sent off for an off-the-ball incident after 69 minutes and Alberto Moleiro added a third for Las Palmas soon after.

César Tárrega got a goal back in stoppage time for Valencia but it was too little too late and Las Palmas celebrated a surprise first win this season and its first in La Liga since February.

The victory lifted it above Valencia on goal difference and off the bottom of the table.

Toni Kroos has said he wasn’t tempted to delay his retirement to link up with Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid, admitting it “wasn’t easy” to tell coach Carlo Ancelotti he’d decided to leave the club.

Midfielder Kroos won 23 trophies in a decade at Madrid — including five Champions Leagues — before retiring last summer, after competing with Germany at Euro 2024.

The 2014 World Cup winner was able to end his career on a high, aged 34, after winning a LaLiga and Champions League double last season.

“The decision didn’t depend on if a player was arriving or leaving,” Kroos told Marca when asked if he’d considered staying at Madrid to play with Mbappé, who agreed a five-year contract in June.

“It was my decision. I knew Mbappé was coming, and I’m glad he did, because he’s going to help the team. He could have come two years ago, but now he’s finally here. But Mbappé didn’t affect my decision.”

Kroos described how he broke the news to Ancelotti, who coached the midfielder in both of his two spells in charge of Madrid.

“It was really hard for me to tell Carlo,” Kroos said. “He was hoping that I would continue, and we had, and have, a really good relationship. He was my first coach here, and it wasn’t easy to tell him, but everything in life comes to an end.

“I knew he wouldn’t get angry, but that he’d be a bit sad. It wasn’t easy for me either, because something that had been very special was ending. I tried to choose a good moment … And I was lucky that we won LaLiga by a distance, and I said: ‘Now!’ Because there was the perfect time, between LaLiga and the Champions League final.”

“After 10 years, everyone knows me very well,” Kroos added. “And they know that if I’ve taken a decision and thought it through, there’s no turning back. The boss [Ancelotti] said to me: ‘You’re German, there’s nothing to be done, right?'”

Kroos’ No. 8 shirt has been passed on to Federico Valverde, who now has the task of replacing his influence in midfield.

“I love [Valverde] as a person and as a player,” Kroos said. “I believe in him and that’s why I gave him the No. 8, I think it could be good for him. Now he has to take the responsibility of playing and taking the risks I took on the pitch. It’s his turn, and I think he can do it.”

Roma legend Francesco Totti has claimed that Serie A teams are still calling him to see if he would return to professional football, adding that he thinks it would take two to three months of training to return to playing fitness.

Totti, 48, retired from football in 2017 having spent his entire career with Roma, playing 786 times and scoring 307 goals for the Giallorossi.

“There were Serie A teams that called me. I admit that they made me think a little, a little crazy,” Totti said. “It would be difficult, but in life you never say never.

“There are players who have played many years after the end of their career. It also depends on where you play, with all due respect, but if I were to return to Serie A I would have to train really well.”

The 2006 World Cup-winner said he would refuse to play for Roma’s bitter rivals Lazio were they to stake a claim for his services.

“Lazio? I wouldn’t even consider it,” he said. “I’d be ready in two to three months — I’m still playing at 48. If I had to do something crazy, I’d do it in Italy, not abroad, but it is crazy.”

Totti, who earned 58 caps for Italy, also said that retirement was not his choice.

“When you turn the page you never know what awaits you. It wasn’t my choice, but in that moment it has to be experienced differently from the context,” he said.

“Maybe that’s also why I’ve had that thing inside me. It’s true that there’s a beginning and an end to everything. I didn’t want it and so that window remained open.”

Roma have endured a difficult start to the 2023-24 campaign, sacking fellow club stalwart Daniele De Rossi after failing to win any of their first four league games.

They are 10th in the standings, with Ivan Jurić having won two of his four domestic games since taking the helm.

We are still only two gameweeks into the new 36-team, one-group UEFA Champions League format, but it has already caused quite a stir.

Change can be difficult to process for soccer fans, especially to longstanding mechanisms in the game, and this latest one has been seismic. In fact, it has ripped up the very fabric of the competition. Whether you like or hate the changes at this early stage, everyone can agree that it still feels a bit weird. But the key question is whether the pushback we’re seeing from fans is a product of typical, initial resistance that will eventually soften, or something deeper.

Here, we’ll take each of the major criticisms that we’ve seen levelled at the new tournament format (which you can see explained here) and try to assess whether they are truly valid, or just a signal of unfamiliarity that will eventually become accepted as time wears on.

1. “It’s uncompetitive.”

There were some incredible games across the first two gameweeks. To namecheck a handful of them: Aston Villa and Lille stunned Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, respectively; 10-man Juventus roared back to beat RB Leipzig 3-2; and Arsenal dispatched Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 with unerring confidence.

There were also some outright drubbings. Dinamo Zagreb were thrashed 9-2 by Bayern; Slovan Bratislava lost 5-1 to Celtic, then followed it up with a 4-0 loss to Manchester City; Celtic went on to lose 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund; while Swiss minnows Young Boys have lost 3-0 to Villa and 5-0 to Barcelona.

For some teams, it has been a brutal start. In the first 36 games, there have been nine wins by a margin of 4+ goals (and there were eight in the first 27 games), which dwarves the numbers we’ve seen in the last five editions of the Champions League across the first two matchdays (two, four, four, five, three). This has led to suggestions that the new format has become less competitive, but there’s a couple of things worth bearing in mind here.

First, two gameweeks is a very small sample size. You can get hints from them, but rarely is it advisable to draw conclusions — anyone who works with data would call you mad for doing so. Second, the teams we’ve namechecked on the wrong end of these scorelines are no strangers to this sort of thing.

Take Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb. They finished last in their group in 2022-23, and last in 2019-20. They qualified for the 2016-17 edition and didn’t score a single goal, while conceding 15 to Lyon, Juventus and Sevilla. The year before that, they beat Arsenal 2-1, but lost 3-0, 2-0, 5-0, 1-0 and 2-1 in the other games.

Young Boys have also perfected the art of finishing bottom of a Champions League group, doing so the last two times they qualified in 2021-22 and 2018-19. While Serbia’s Crvena Zvezda, who were beaten 10-2 over two games against PSG in 2018-19, lost their group games by an aggregate score of 9-0 to Bayern and Tottenham in 2019-20. Even Celtic, an iconic European name, finished bottom of their group the last three times they’ve qualified before this season, twice conceding 15 times across their six games and losing 9-0 on aggregate in both games against Barcelona.

All of this is to show, in the context of the scale of European football, that the good teams are still good, and the bad teams are still bad. And bad teams have always been present in the Champions League.

Yes, scorelines have flared up earlier than usual this season, and it will be interesting to see if that’s simply a small sample size or indicative of the fact the tournament has grown from 32 to 36 teams this year, widening the depth of talent from top to bottom. But in the entirety of the group stage in 2022-23, there were 16 thrashings by 4+ goals, and 14 the year before that, — so we’ll have to see if the trend continues.

As with any dataset, there have also been some anomalies. Young Boys, who are 36th in the UCL table with a -8 goal difference, won the Swiss Super League in 2024 and beat Galatasaray over two legs in qualifying, but are bizarrely bottom of their domestic league this year with just six points from nine games. So you would expect their form to turn around at some point. Meanwhile, included in the list of nine 4+ winning margins so far is Benfica’s 4-0 destruction of Spain’s third-best team Atlético Madrid. Nobody would have predicted that result before the game. So this might be the biggest clue of all that we’d be wise to wait and see what unfolds before rushing to judgement.

Why the final league phase match should matter to most teams in the UCL

Dale Johnson explains why teams will be motivated to play in the final league phase match in the Champions League.

2. “Losses don’t matter.”

Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atlético Madrid have all lost one of their opening two games. Meanwhile, AC Milan and RB Leipzig have lost both of their games so far and are rubbing shoulders with the likes of Crvena Zvezda in the bottom third.

This is bad. Yet the reaction from fans hasn’t been, which suggests many aren’t convinced the losses are that costly at this stage. Given the increased number of games and early feel to the table, no single result feels terminal right now. But fortunately, video games can give us a reference point of what will be required to make the top eight automatic spots.

“Football Manager” baked the new Champions League format into their game two years ago, giving us thousands of simulations to draw upon, and it showed that teams are highly likely to require a minimum of 15 points. There’s a chance that figure could even creep to 16 or 17, too. So if we take 16 as the middle target, that means you need to tick along at an average of two points per game to make it.

Now reconsider the fact that Bayern have already lost to a Pot 4 side (Villa), and face Barcelona, Benfica and PSG in the months to come. Add to that the fact Real Madrid have lost to a Pot 3 side (Lille) and have Dortmund, AC Milan, Liverpool and Atalanta on the horizon. That means there is already very little margin for error for these two titans, as they’ve already dropped three points and are still due to play two Pot 1 fixtures and two Pot 2 fixtures.

Consider the points target, the fixture list and the ground already lost … and these early losses take on a different complexion.

For Europe’s established juggernauts, the old Champions League group stage was often about getting to 10 points and then assessing what was needed to finish top and secure a (theoretically) easier knockout draw. Now, it’s a war of attrition against 10+ foes; if you can’t churn out the wins now, you might pay for it in February.

3. “It’s a goals-scored competition.”

There’s no escaping that a single 36-team table looks bizarre. However, splitting it horizontally into four sections helps massively when it comes to outlining the different qualification zones and where teams stand.

But one curious complaint from fans is the accusation that the Champions League has turned into a competition that rewards the number of goals scored. That’s likely because the top seven in the table are all on six points and are separated by goal difference and goals scored right now.

STREAM ESPN FC DAILY ON ESPN+

This is clearly another quirk of the fact we’re only two gameweeks into the campaign; it is highly unlikely that even one team wins all eight games — let alone seven of them.

In the old format, with eight different groups of four, no-one would have batted an eyelid if seven teams won their opening two fixtures because they weren’t being directly compared together. As ever, points gained will be the real separator, with goal difference kicking in to divide a handful of clubs if needed.

It’s also worth highlighting that an incentive to score as many goals as possible is actually good for the game. Fans love seeing goals and, as illustrated earlier, we are seeing plenty right now.

While the table may not make pleasant reading for those whose clubs find themselves in a difficult position, neutrals should be encouraged by the fact that three of the seven perfect teams (Brest, Villa, Bayer Leverkusen) weren’t even in the Champions League last season. It’s fresh, it’s different, and it piles pressure on those who have not started well.

ESPN FC’s Stewart Robson breaks down Arsenal’s 2-0 win over PSG at the Emirates Stadium.

4. “There are too many games.”

The most disappointing aspect of this new format for some fans is how it has added more games to an already stacked calendar.

There are now eight matches instead of six in the group stage, and any team placing 9th to 24th will have to play twice more in a playoff to reach the Round of 16. Ultimately, those teams will have played 10 games to get there — whereas in the old format, it would have been just six. And, in the event a playoff team go on to win the Champions League, they’ll have played 17 games in total — which would have been just 13 last year.

Furthermore, every team will play twice during the transfer window in January. And that is just weird.

It’s a lot. And it comes at a time where some players have openly spoken about the possibility of going on strike due to the number of games. Indeed, Manchester City’s Rodri and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have confirmed that the players’ union, FIFPRO, have filed a legal claim against FIFA on this matter.

Perhaps the true driving force for this was the unveiling of the new 32-team FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in summer 2025, alongside regulations designed to stop clubs leaving their best players at home. But UEFA sneaking extra games into the new Champions League format will have been a factor too.

This one is pretty much indefensible.

VERDICT: Fair

What will the new UEFA Champions League format look like?

Dale Johnson explains how the new UEFA Champions League format will look for the 2024-25 season.

5. “Playing eight different opponents is too much.”

The old group-stage format gave teams just three opponents to play twice, home and away. Now it’s eight opponents and they’re all different; there’s no return fixture to consider, a much longer list of fixtures to remember, and more of a carbon footprint involved in getting to them all.

The positive is that it adds great variety to the fixture list. If UEFA’s goal was to remove early elements of repetition in games and create a more overarching continental feel to teams’ experiences in the tournament, they’ve certainly hit that brief.

The negative is that it leaves fans unable to benchmark their team’s potential progress to the knockout stages early on, as it’s very difficult for anyone to figure out who they’re supposed to be competing with in the table. There’s also something odd about a league of teams whose points tallies compete against each other, but who don’t all play against each other. Perhaps some fans also miss the “grudge match” element of a return fixture in a group too, which is forever gone now.

VERDICT: Wait and see

6. “The draw was terrible.”

For those who were sceptical of the new format, watching an abomination of a draw process won’t have helped one bit. Clearly, the new format is more technical to draw out and far less suited to UEFA’s traditional method of broadcasting.

But what we witnessed was a mess that was so tough to follow, even Cristiano Ronaldo consistently slamming a giant button over and over again couldn’t save it.

UEFA can’t conduct the draw privately and relay the results later, as there would inevitably be accusations of fixing, but they have a year to figure out a different way to make the draw broadcastable. The first effort was shocking.

Is Arne Slot creating leverage for Liverpool’s contract conflicts? (2:17)Gab Marcotti believes Arne Slot is gaining leverage in contract talks between Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. (2:17)

The European soccer weekend has passed, but it’s left us with a ton of things to talk about across the major leagues. In the Premier League, Liverpool edged past Chelsea in a game that honestly showed the best of both sides, while in LaLiga, Real Madrid got another gritty win despite still not looking like the juggernaut everyone expected when Kylian Mbappé joined in the summer.

Elsewhere: Barcelona welcomed back Gavi after a long injury layoff and thrashed Sevilla, Harry Kane scored a hat trick for Bayern Munich to snap his scoring drought, and Arsenal‘s latest red card nightmare may signal something gloomier about their status as title contenders. There were also talking points galore around Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, Manchester United and more.

It’s Monday. Gab Marcotti reacts to the biggest moments in the world of soccer.

Why Arne Slot and Enzo Maresca can both be happy after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea

It’s not a surprise that Arne Slot is pleased. Liverpool won 2-1 to stay top of the table, one point ahead of Manchester City, who had beaten Wolves earlier in the day. His decision to initially rest Luis Díaz and Alexis Mac Allister, both of whom had played midweek internationals halfway around the world, was also vindicated. (Darwin Núñez was also benched at the start, but had to come on in the first half following Diogo Jota‘s injury.) Curtis Jones, who replaced Mac Allister, showed that he can more than hang in this midfield, while Cody Gakpo showed, again, he’s a more than viable option out wide.

But what of Enzo Maresca? He said the performance was “very good” and “if there is a way to lose a game, then this is the way.” Is he deluded?

I don’t think so. Not so much for the underlying stats — 58% possession at Anfield is nice, as is all that accurate passing, but it’s only marginally relevant — but for the way Chelsea held together and looked disciplined against a quality opponent. They looked like a team; in other games even when they’ve won, too often it felt it was about their star players doing star player-type things. In fact, their star player, Cole Palmer, was somewhat muted (by his standards, anyway).

And it really shouldn’t have been this way, looking at the personnel. Reece James was making his first appearance of the season, Romeo Lavia and Tosin Adarabioyo their second league starts, Malo Gusto was forced to decamp to left back. And yet the system held, with Liverpool forced to defend for longer stretches than they would have liked.

This may have been Chelsea’s best performance of the season, and it came without three projected regulars Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernández. The question is how you build on it, especially when you don’t know what you’re going to get in terms of serviceable minutes from James, Fofana and Lavia.

This is part of the challenge for Maresca, who is dealing with the fallout of the club’s “project” that has left him with a young and gifted — albeit poorly assorted and, in some roles, physically frail — squad. He put it best in an interview with Sky Italia over the weekend: “I’m in charge of the sporting side, what I can control is the group of players I have and I know where I want to take them.”

As for Slot, one thing that immediately jumps out is the huge range of options he has. Some coaches insist on working with a core group of 14 or 15 players. Others say they love having two guys for every position. Slot hasn’t weighed in, but the reality is that Liverpool’s potential second XI is as good (and as a experienced) as any in Europe. How’s this: Caoimhín Kelleher — Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah, Kostas TsimikasWataru Endo, Curtis Jones — Federico Chiesa, Harvey Elliott, Cody Gakpo — Darwin Nunez.

Nicol underwhelmed by Liverpool in win over Chelsea

Steve Nicol shares his frustrations with table-topping Liverpool after Arne Slot’s men claimed a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield.

Slot didn’t rotate much early on, presumably because he wanted to get the chemistry right. But now it feels as if he has options and flexibility, which matters on several fronts. First, it’s obviously a big bonus in terms of navigating a long and fixture-congested season. Second, while some players are inevitably more important than others (Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk spring to mind), nobody feels indispensable to this side. And finally, while some are loath to discuss it, the size and depth of the squad give the club leverage when it comes to their trio of free agents: Salah, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Both Slot and Maresca are new to their jobs. Both can be pleased with what they saw this weekend, but Slot, clearly, is well ahead, mainly because he landed at a more stable (and better run) club. My colleague Rob Palmer — standing in for Julien Laurens on Monday’s “Gab+Juls Show” — put it best. I’m paraphrasing here, but in essence Slot is an interior decorator who moved some furniture around and changed some of the decor in a solid, well-built, already beautiful home; Maresca arrived on a building site and had to get to work with lumber, concrete and glass, building from scratch.

Despite win, all is not well at Real Madrid … and not just because of Ancelotti’s tactical tweaks

Carlo Ancelotti has talked all season along about finding “balance,” and it’s not hard to see why. For all the attacking riches in the shape of Kylian Mbappe, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, these are four players who all tend to gravitate to the left. Throw in the fact that work off the ball isn’t always a priority — especially for the first two — and it’s not hard to see how he’d be tempted to tinker with his formation.

Saturday, away to Celta, a 3-4-2-1 formation that meant Rodrygo was dropped, Bellingham was deployed on the right and Aurélien Tchouaméni operated as a third centre back. Real Madrid won 2-1, but don’t let that fool you. One goal was a ridiculous individual effort from Mbappe, while the other came courtesy of a genius assist from substitute Luka Modric who, at 39 — and officially Madrid’s oldest-ever player — can only be counted on so often. Celta won the xG battle (1.82 to 0.74) and Thibaut Courtois (him again …) had to make two out-of-this-world saves: one from Williot Swedberg, one from Jonathan Bamba.

Marcotti: All is not well at Real Madrid

Gab Marcotti believes that Real Madrid are struggling to hit their peak so far this season.

One poor performance isn’t reason enough to shelve the “back three” experiment, but I’m not sure Madrid have the personnel in terms of sheer numbers to keep this up all year (unless they make moves in January and, remember, they still have to find a solution to Dani Carvajal‘s absence). That said, he has to try to something.

Ancelotti took it on the chin on Saturday, blaming himself for “not explaining the system well enough to the players.” Maybe he’ll have time to explain it better ahead of the Clasico this Saturday.

The other glaring takeaway is that while Mbappe (despite his well-chronicled off-the-pitch issues) seemed focused, hard-working and unselfish, Bellingham looked grumpy and off the pace. He has yet to find the right chemistry with his teammates up front, and strops like the one he threw after Vinícius did not find him at the far post in the first half don’t help build team chemistry.

Rumors of Harry Kane’s demise are greatly exaggerated, but don’t let a big win over Stuttgart fool you

There’s nothing better than a hat trick to silence the doubters, and Harry Kane did just that, hitting the net three times in Bayern’s 4-0 win over Stuttgart. The goals ended a drought that lasted — including his England appearance — nearly 400 minutes, which is an eternity for a center-forward of his calibre considering the sort of service he usually gets. It’s probably not a coincidence that the spell coincided with Bayern dropping points in three games and England not exactly ripping it up against Finland.

Kane snapped his games-long scoreless streak for club and country with three goals vs. Stuttgart, but Bayern still look a bit wobbly. Tom Weller/picture alliance via Getty Images

The big win against an overachiever-turned-pretender like Stuttgart is even better news than Kane’s hat trick, obviously, but Vincent Kompany will want to treat this game as a learning opportunity. For much of the first half, Bayern were stifled and looked very uncomfortable. João Palhinha, who came on for the injured Aleksandar Pavlovic (he’ll miss time with a broken collarbone) looked like a foreign object. The forwards were imprecise, the movement slack. It was only Kane’s long-range wonder strike that broke the deadlock, well into the second half, before Bayern’s greater individual quality made all the difference.

You can’t just explain this away with the absence of Jamal Musiala, either. The worst thing Kompany could do at this stage is rest on his laurels.

Red cards loom large for Arsenal, at Bournemouth and in title challenge too

OK, Premier League referee boss Howard Webb fiddling on his phone with an old-school wired earpiece while William Saliba‘s challenge on Evanilson went to VAR was not a good look. Maybe put the phone away during the game, or don’t sit in the stands if you’re going to use it during crucial moments, but make no mistake about it. Given where the foul was committed and where the covering defenders were, that’s a red card every day of the week — and with good reason. It’s precisely what we don’t want to see: a foul denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Yet when stuff like this happens, you need to react. Arsenal weren’t great — they were missing Bukayo Saka in addition to Martin Odegaard — but they still carved out two very good chances, which Mikel Merino (making his first start) and Gabriel Martinelli missed. Then again, they were also outwitted on Ryan Christie‘s set-piece routine — maybe slow down on the whole “set-piece coach” genius thing for a while — and gave away a needless penalty to win the game. Andoni Iraola is one of the most underrated coaches around, but Mikel Arteta is correct when he says: “We kicked ourselves in the foot.” And he wasn’t just talking about Saliba or Leandro Trossard‘s awful backpass that played him into trouble, either.

play1:27

Will Arsenal’s discipline cost them the Premier League title?

Gab Marcotti and Rob Palmer discuss Arsenal’s disciplinary record after William Saliba’s red card against Bournemouth.

Saliba will now miss the Liverpool game, which is pretty much a six-pointer if you fancy yourself a title contender. More to the point, it’s still October, and this is Arsenal’s third red card of the season. Each has cost them points, and each was largely avoidable. (Arsenal are not a dirty side!) What’s more, in the past decade, nobody has won the league while clocking more than three red cards.

Quick hits

10. Gavi returns as Barcelona romp to 5-1 win: You didn’t have to be a “cule” to get that tiny bit emotional seeing Pedri trot to the sideline and give Gavi the armband as he made his first appearance in 11 months. We can fret about where he’s going to play when he regains match sharpness, but wherever it is, it’s going to be a huge addition. Even if he’s sharing time, at least initially, with the current regulars, it’s going to be a crucial boost in a season where load management and rotating are critical. On the pitch, Sevilla were blown with three first-half goals — including two from Robert Lewandowski, who now has 14 in 12 games in all competitions — and there was even time for the youngster Pablo Torre to come on and grab a couple. Barcelona are playing with total confidence and fluidity right now — keyed by Raphinha, who is arguably playing the best football of his career — though if you’re going to nitpick, at some point they’ll need to address the high defensive line. Sevilla could have punished them, and better teams with better forwards will, but that’s a concern for another time.

9. Lessons learned for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham: Like reading the game correctly and taking off your main creative threat in midfield (James Maddison) for someone less gifted, but more physical (Pape Sarr). It’s not that Spurs didn’t have much of the upper hand in a first half that finished 1-1; it’s more the fact that they struggled to stop West Ham’s transitions. Pape Sarr addressed that, and in this context, it was OK to sacrifice Maddison’s quality because the likes of Heung Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski (again) were running rampant, as Spurs ran out 4-1 winners. It’s not renouncing “Ange-ball” — it’s making it more effective by responding to what is actually happening on the pitch.

8. Fonseca’s hard line pays dividends as 10-man Milan beat Udinese: Just about every coach talks the talk (“every member of the squad is equally important”), but not everyone walks the walk the way Fonseca does. He could have let the pre-break embarrassment of Milan’s silliness against Fiorentina slide. Instead, he acted by dropping Rafael Leão, and he probably would have dropped Theo Hernández too if he wasn’t suspended. Milan took the lead through Samuel Chukwueze, played more than an hour with 10 men after Tijani Reijnders’ red card, and still saw out a 1-0 win over Udinese. In so doing, they showed the kind of unity, professionalism and grit that their fans have been crying out for all season. Some coaches are indeed as good as their word.

7. Ten Hag finds motivation wherever he can as Man United snap their winless streak: Ten Hag & Co. went into the break a goal down and furious at the referee for twice making Matthijs De Ligt come off the pitch to get patched up after he injured himself in a wild challenge. De Ligt’s head and face were covered in blood, and the rules are pretty clear despite Ten Hag’s insistence that “it was dry blood.” The fact that he was off the pitch when Brentford went a goal up only infuriated him further, and he said the team “used it as fuel” for the second-half comeback that resulted in a 2-1 win. More than the “fuel” argument, I’d chalk it up to the fact that Marcus Rashford on the right can show off his perceptive passing, Alejandro Garnacho is a baller and Rasmus Hojlund is a cool finisher. That, and the fact that Brentford — when they’re missing this many players — aren’t good whereas United kept their belief until the end. Ten Hag can say his job isn’t on the line (“fairy tales and lies”), but his state of mind speaks volumes.

6. Leverkusen’s big, late break infuriates Eintracht, and rightly so: Sometimes, more than one thing can be true. How the referee did not award Eintracht a penalty after Hugo Ekitike was unbalanced (at a minimum) by Jonathan Tah in injury time is hard to understand. If you were Eintracht you’d be angry, seeing a potential draw at the defending champions slip through your fingers. But hopefully you’d be realistic, too. Bayer Leverkusen had nine shots on target (27 overall) and an xG of 4.21, while missing a penalty to boot, en route to a 2-1 win. In terms of performance, this game should not have come down to injury time.

5. Lautaro Martínez enters the history books for Inter: The 1-0 win away to Roma was a “grown-up” (read: unspectacular and results-focused) performance and Lautaro Martinez was the difference-maker, scoring the only goal. I’m not sure I’d go as far as Simone Inzaghi, who says he’s a top five player in the world, but after a slow September, he’s hitting his stride nicely and his goal makes him Inter’s greatest-ever foreign goal scorer. Roma were poor and fearful, the rumblings among the fans don’t help, and Inter took advantage without risking too much.

4. Paris Saint-Germain’s youth project continues with Senny Mayulu: Maybe load management for veterans plus kids to eat minutes in Ligue 1 isn’t an official Luis Enrique policy. But it’s working, in no small part because PSG’s homegrown kids are just that good. Warren Zaïre-Emery, Yoram Zague, Ibrahim Mbaye and now Senny Mayulu have all started in Ligue 1 this year … and all are still teenagers. For that matter, so is Desiree Doue (who is not homegrown). PSG mixed it up against Strasbourg (with six plausible starters left out) and it was Mayulu who stole the show, opening the scoring en route to a 4-2 win.

3. Criticism of Juventus is wide of the mark at this stage in the season: No, Juventus did not exactly turn on the style in their 1-0 win over Lazio on Saturday. The build-up is too slow, and there’s a lack of directness. That’s not a reason to beat up Thiago Motta, though. Lazio going down to 10 men after 23 minutes didn’t help, as their opponents went into lockdown mode. And without Nico Gonzalez, Federico Conceicao and Teun Koopmeiners, they won’t have the same attacking oomph, which is understandable. Juve have yet to concede from open play, they’re third in Serie A, they’ve won both their Champions League games, the new boss just arrived … chill out.

Late Stones goal controversy overshadows other issues in Man City’s win: It hurts to concede in the 95th minute, but the reality is that John Stones‘ winner in the 2-1 Manchester City win away to Wolves should have stood: Bernardo Silva was not offside when he was interfering with goalkeeper José Sá (there is no offside on corner kicks) and by the time he could be offside (when Stones headed the ball) he wasn’t affecting play. That’s pretty obvious. The three points are big for Pep Guardiola, but the game showed there’s plenty to work on. For the fourth time in their last seven games, City went a goal down (and it could have been two down, if not for an Éderson miracle) and despite having over 75% possession, they looked sterile with the ball. Credit Wolves, who are much better than the table suggests, but there are things for Pep to work on.

1. Gilmour isn’t Lobotka (not yet, anyway) as soft penalty at Empoli keeps lackluster Napoli top of Serie A: Those who only look at results won’t care, but I assure you Antonio Conte does, which is why he said “anyone who has a headache can tell me and I’ll play someone else.” I’m not sure he was talking about anyone in particular (though Romelu Lukaku looked especially off the pace), but when Napoli play like this, he’s right to be concerned. A lot of the criticism is directed at Billy Gilmour, handed the playmaking role in Stanislav Lobotka’s absence. He wasn’t great, but this was his first league start. Let’s give him a bit of time, shall we?

Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho expressed frustration at local journalists on Sunday after his side lost ground on Super Lig leaders Galatasaray, claiming that he is “always” being asked about players that don’t play.

Fenerbahce were held to a 2-2 draw with Samsunspor in a game that saw his team concede a late equaliser.

Asked by a reporter why certain players are not playing, Mourinho, who took on the Fenerbahce job this summer, said after the game: “I’m starting to learn what Turkey is. I’m surprised that you don’t ask why goalkeeper Irfan [Can Eğribayat] doesn’t play, I’m surprised that you don’t ask about [forward] Cenk Tosun, I’m surprised because you always ask about the players that don’t play.

“For me [Dušan] Tadić has been our best player for some matches, not because he scores important goals but because the balance he gives to the team, because of the organisation he has in his brain, because he doesn’t make positional or decision-making mistakes. If you don’t want me to play him, and play somebody who isn’t playing much, okay.”

Serbian forward Tadic started and scored his fifth league goal on Sunday. He has also registered four assists in eight league games so far this season.

“It’s difficult for me to give more reasons because I don’t want to analyse my players publicly,” Mourinho said. “I have to protect players and not to open too much about the reasons why this one plays and not the other.

“I understand it is your culture … You are crying every week for me to play [midfielder] Irfan Kahveci [who came on as substitute on Sunday] … sometimes players that you think are phenomenal players, they are not. Sometimes they make mistakes that are critical mistakes for the team.”

Mourinho is looking to end Fenerbahce’s 10-year Super Lig title drought this season.

The club finished second in the Turkish league last season, losing one game all season but finishing three points behind eventual champion and fierce rivals Galatasaray.

Fenerbahce are fourth in the league this season, eight points adrift of Galatasaray, although Mourinho’s side has a game in hand.

The club are also competing in the Europa League this season and host Mourinho’s former club Manchester United on Thursday.

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery has insisted his team are ready to compete for major silverware as they prepare to host Bologna in their third Champions League game of the season.

The Birmingham-based side have won both of their games in the competition so far having qualified for European football’s elite competition for the first time since the 1982-83 season.

“I don’t want to waste my time here, that is my message. You can’t waste your time here,” Emery told a news conference on Monday.

“My objective here is to keep the same level we have now, Champions League and add more to be contenders for titles.

“This is the message, we love football, we love our work and we want to be successful.”

Villa Park is set for its second Champions League game — the competition was rebranded from the European Cup at the start of the 1992 season — having played host to Jhon Durán‘s stunning winner against Bayern Munich in the previous game.

Emery said he doesn’t want his team to merely be making up the numbers, and restated his intention to qualify for the competition on a regular basis.

“We want to achieve the objectives and one of them is to play in the Champions League. It is not about playing there only because of some circumstances — I want to us to stay there for a long time,” the Spanish coach said.

“But it is difficult. Maybe sometimes you can have some problems or struggle in our way, but you have to be resilient. We want to be strong in the idea in our mind and create a strong mentality to always break barriers.

“We can believe, working like we are doing, we can keep it. This is my challenge, this is my objective now.”

Bologna also qualified for the modern version of the Champions League for the first time after finishing fifth in Serie A last term.

They have one point from their two matches thus far, having drawn with Shakhtar Donetsk before succumbing to defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.

Arteta: Arsenal need to eradicate red cards (0:57)Mikel Arteta speaks about whether Arsenal’s discipline is a problem. (0:57)

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has said his team need to “eradicate” the ill discipline that has seen them pick up three red cards in eight Premier League games this season.

William Saliba‘s red card in the 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth followed those of Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard earlier this term.

“Playing with 10 men always is an issue,” Arteta said at his news conference ahead of Arsenal‘s UEFA Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday. “The trust is, when you analyse it, three different very actions and the outcome of them, the reasons are very different.

“Regardless of that we cannot continue to play with 10 men at this level. We need to eradicate that, it’s clear. The reasons, how; it doesn’t matter. We have to focus.”

The loss to Bournemouth was Arsenal’s first of the campaign. In the previous games where Rice and Trossard were shown red cards, against Brighton and Manchester City, the north London side managed to earn a point.

Arteta added that his team needed to use the “pain” of their defeat as motivation for their upcoming games.

“We cannot continue to play with ten men, easier to say it then to get it done,” he said. “Specific moments. Reacting, we have a defeat. Very specific conditions as well.

“Let’s move on, take that pain we have and use it tomorrow night.”

Club captain Martin Ødegaard and star winger Bukayo Saka both missed Arsenal’s trip to Bournemouth with injuries.

Arteta said Saka could return in time for Tuesday night’s game at the Emirates, though it comes too soon for the Norway international.

“They are closer. Both progressing well,” he said. “Martin not fit. With Bukayo let’s see how he is with the training session later on.”

The transfer window may be closed, but followers of Juve’s English account on social media platform X were left scratching their heads when a photo of Madrid midfielder Güler at an airport was posted.

“Welcome to Juventus, Arda Güler,” the post said.

“The rising star of football is now part of the Juventus family.”

Juventus then clarified the situation on their Italian account, much to the disappointment of their supporters, and the highly rated 19-year-old international will not be appearing in Serie A any time soon.

“Our Juventus English account has been hacked. Please ignore the false information being published on this account,” the club’s official post on X said.

Motta’s team have been prolific in Europe, netting six goals in those two matches, but their forward line has been less effective in Serie A, managing 11 goals in eight games.

“There is no difference between the league and the Champions League,” Motta told reporters on Monday. “We must always have the same attitude, each match is a story in itself — with evolving strategies and situations.

“It’s not just us who have difficulties against teams that close down well, everyone struggles, football is like that and that’s why we have to give our all and believe until the end.

“We must continue to improve in all aspects, both in terms of the game and mentally. We hope to perform well, playing good football, that is the way we will have a chance of winning.”

Carlo Ancelotti has defended Jude Bellingham‘s Real Madrid form, saying the work he’s doing for the team this season is “more important” than scoring goals.

Bellingham hasn’t found the net in nine games for Madrid this season, after scoring 23 club goals in all competitions last campaign.

The England midfielder’s role in the team has evolved since the arrival of Kylian Mbappé, starting on the right-hand side of the attack in Madrid’s 2-1 LaLiga win away at Celta Vigo on Saturday.

“We’re satisfied with his work, I’m very satisfied,” Ancelotti said in a news conference on Monday ahead of Madrid’s Champions League game with Borussia Dortmund. “He works a lot, he’s always present, he competes, he fights, he sacrifices himself.

“It’s true he hasn’t scored the goals he scored last year, but the surprise isn’t this year, the surprise was last year, when he scored lots of goals which nobody expected and helped us a lot. The problem this year isn’t that we’re lacking Bellingham’s goals.

“We’ve always scored goals, and we’ll always score, because we have talented players up front. For us, in this moment, the work he’s doing is more important than the goals the scored last year.”

Madrid host Barcelona in LaLiga in El Clásico on Saturday, three points behind the league leaders.

Mbappé scored against Celta — and has six league goals this season — and Ancelotti said he’s not concerned by criticism of the France international’s work off-the-ball.

“[I ask him] to score goals,” Ancelotti said. “I prefer him to score goals rather than pressing. The centre forward role hasn’t changed for us, I ask the same of Mbappé that I asked Karim [Benzema], to be ready when we win the ball, and try to make a fast transition.”

Madrid are unbeaten in LaLiga this season, but haven’t always convinced — including against Celta — while rivals Barça beat Sevilla 5-1 on Sunday.

“We aren’t 100%, obviously,” Ancelotti said. “We’ve got good results, but we have to improve in terms of our play, and little by little, we will… We have to defend better, as we did last year. Right now the team is less solid, and we’re working on that.”

Neymar makes long-awaited return: ‘I’m so happy’

Neymar has made his first appearance in over a year after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament tear, coming off the bench in the second half of Al Hilal‘s AFC Champions League Elite clash against Al Ain.

The Brazil star replaced Nasser Al Dawsari in the 77th minute, just after Salem Al Dawsari had scored to put Al Hilal 5-3 ahead. He nearly made an instant impact, exchanging passes with Aleksandar Mitrovic to create space before firing his shot just wide of the left-hand post.

The game finished 5-4 to Al Hilal after the United Arab Emirates-based Al Ain scored a last-gasp penalty to narrow the scoreline.

On the pitch after the full-time whistle, Neymar said: “I feel good… I always have a good team. I’m so happy. I’m back! I’m back!

The former Paris Saint-Germain player suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during Brazil’s qualifier against Uruguay shortly after joining the Saudi Pro League (SPL). He underwent surgery last November.

Neymar had joined the Al Hilal in August 2023 from PSG in a €90 million transfer, but played just five games before suffering the injury.

Neymar’s former club Santos congratulated the player on his return in a post on X.

“It was more than 12 months away from the field, with an immeasurable longing to return to doing what he loves so much,” the Brazilian club wrote.

“Neymar is not just a star. It’s not just genius. Neymar is synonymous with joy in football. His return is the happiness of millions of fans around the world. And, when it comes to fans, the Santos nation has an incomparable feeling. A more than special bond with the best Brazilian player of recent years.”

The forward, who is Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, missed the 2024 Copa América that was won by Argentina.

He is eligible to play in the AFC Champions League as there are no restrictions on the number of foreign players. However, he will only be able to be registered in January for the second half of the Saudi Pro League season.

SPL teams have limits to the number of foreign players that can be registered.

Eight foreign players born before 2003 can be registered for the squad, while the rules allow for two foreign players born in 2003 or after. Neymar’s contract with Al Hilal expires in June 2025.

Saudi champions Al Hilal, coached by Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus, lead the domestic standings having won all seven of their games.

Brazil’s Football Confederation (CBF), meanwhile, are hopeful of having Neymar available in time for the November World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay.

Brazil are fourth in their World Cup qualifying group, four points adrift of leaders Argentina after 10 games.

It is reported that the 23-year-old, who arrived at Old Trafford in July for a fee of £36.5 million from Bologna, wants to return to Italy, having previously turned down the chance to remain there during the last transfer window.

While AC Milan are said to have no interest in bringing the Netherlands international to the San Siro, Juventus are one of the clubs that could make a move amid belief that Zirkzee fits the profile of the type of forward they are looking for. The Italian outlet says that an approach for a potential loan deal could be made in January, but it is unclear whether United would be willing to let him leave without lining up a replacement first.

Zirkzee’s record of one goal in 11 matches across all competitions this season has compounded a difficult start to life in England, and his recent form has also seen him lose his place in manager Erik ten Hag’s starting XI to Rasmus Hojlund — scorer of the winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 comeback victory over Brentford.

PAPER GOSSIP

Chelsea are interested in Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, reports Team Talk. The Blues are reportedly “heavily scouting” the 25-year-old, though they could face competition for him from both Liverpool and Arsenal, who are also keeping an eye on his progress. Marmoush has been one of the standout performers in Europe this season, with nine goals and four assists from the opening seven Bundesliga matches.

– Several “top clubs” from the Premier League are keeping close tabs on VfB Stuttgart forward Jamie Leweling, reports Sky Sports Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg. Interest in his signature is believed to have increased following his debut for the Germany national team and, while the 23-year-old is contracted at the Bundesliga club until 2028, a release clause in his contract allows him to be signed for a fee of around €25m next summer.

– Arsenal are keen on Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, according to Football Insider. The Gunners are reported to be plotting a move for the 25-year-old having been impressed by his start to the season, during which he has scored six goals in six Premier League games. It is believed that an offer worth at least £40m would be required to land the Cameroon star.

– Free agent defender Simon Kjaer is hopeful of reuniting with former manager Stefano Pioli at Al Nassr, reports Gazzetta dello Sport. The 35-year-old Denmark international, who left AC Milan when his contract expired in the summer, is said to be working hard to achieve fitness amid hopes of returning to football.

– Talks over a new contract are ongoing between Paris Saint-Germain and the representatives of left-back Nuno Mendes, says Nicolo Schira. PSG are said to be working on a new four-and-a-half-year extension that would secure the 22-year-old’s future at the Parc des Princes until the summer of 2029. He has made six appearances across all competitions so far this season.

Inter Milan suffered another injury setback during their Serie A match against AS Roma on Sunday, both Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Francesco Acerbi were forced off with muscular injuries in the first half.

Despite the early exits of two starting players, Inter managed to secure a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Lautaro Martínez.

Less than 12 minutes into the match, Çalhanoğlu requested to be substituted due to discomfort in his left thigh. Fifteen minutes later, Acerbi was also forced off with a similar injury.

“Calhanoglu wasn’t in great shape over the last two days, so with the other two available I would’ve rested him this evening. He is generous and tried to put in the effort, but he felt the adductor pain and stopped before it got worse,” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi told DAZN.

The win moved the Nerazzurri within two points of league leaders Napoli.

Inzaghi praised his captain, Martinez, who bagged his 133rd goal for Inter across all competitions, for matching the club’s all-time scoring record for a foreign player, which was previously held by Hungarian Istvan Nyers since the 1950s.

“He just has to keep doing what he has done with Inter and Argentina. I think he is one of the five best players in the world. He deserves all of this success,” Inzaghi said.

The match was the first of seven in 21 days in an intense period for Inter, which will also play more games than almost any other club this season. As well as the Italian league, Inter is involved in the Champions League, the Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup, and has qualified for the newly expanded Club World Cup.

“We have to live with the constant stress of so many games that the players are struggling to handle … we need to safeguard their health,” Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta said before Sunday’s match.

“It is not an easy situation … but we need to sit around a table and recognize that the fixture list has to be cut back.”

A group of over 100 professional women’s footballers on Monday sent an open letter to FIFA urging the world governing body to end its partnership with oil and gas conglomerate Saudi Aramco.

In April, FIFA signed a four-year deal which will see Aramco become a worldwide partner, including in major tournaments such as the 2026 World Cup and the Women’s World Cup the following year.

Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in sports like football, Formula One and golf in the last few years while critics, including women’s rights groups and members of the LGBTQ community, accuse the kingdom of using its Public Investment Fund (PIF) to “sportswash” its human rights record.

The country denies accusations of human rights abuses and, arguing it protects its national security through its laws.

Manchester City striker Vivianne Miedema, Canada captain Jessie Fleming and ex-United States captain Becky Sauerbrunn were among the players to sign the letter.

“We urge FIFA to reconsider this partnership and replace Saudi Aramco with alternative sponsors whose values align with gender equality, human rights and the safe future of our planet,” the players said in the letter.

They also proposed setting up a review committee with player representation to evaluate the ethical implications of future sponsorship deals.

FIFA pointed to the impact of sponsorship revenues on investment in the women’s game.

“FIFA values its partnership with Aramco and its many others commercial and rights partners,” a spokesperson for FIFA said.

“FIFA is an inclusive organisation with many commercial partners also supporting other organisations in football and other sports.

“Sponsorship revenues generated by FIFA are reinvested back into the game at all levels and investment in women’s football continues to increase, including for the historic FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup and its groundbreaking new distribution model.”

A representative for Aramco said they would provide a response to the letter at the earliest opportunity.

Nicol: VAR deserves praise after Man City’s late winner vs. Wolves (1:03)Steve Nicol reacts to the late VAR call that gave Man City a 2-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League. (1:03)

Manchester City‘s contentious last-minute winner against Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday was both correctly ruled and deserved reward for his players’ patience, manager Pep Guardiola said.

With City seemingly heading to a frustrating 1-1 draw at Molineux despite their dominance of possession, John Stones headed a 95th-minute corner past Wolves goalkeeper José Sá.

1 Related

Referee Chris Kavanagh first disallowed the goal as City midfielder Bernardo Silva was close to Sa, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) deemed he was not blocking the line of vision and Kavanagh rescinded his decision.

“Bernardo isn’t disturbing the position … Sá had the perfect vision. The taker from Phil [Foden] and the header were magnificent,” said Guardiola, who wildly celebrated the 2-1 win that briefly put City top of the league until Liverpool earned a 2-1 win against Chelsea.

“We are not used to winning games at the end, like [former manager] Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool where it happened many times. It is a good flavour for us,” Guardiola added.

City had 78% possession against a Wolves side fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and desperate to hang on once they had taken an early lead.

“With 11 players in the penalty spot, literally it is so difficult,” Guardiola said, recalling that his team had lost at Molineux last season. “But we were patient … We are who we are and that is so nice.”

He was, however, sympathetic to his opponents.

“We have been in that position, when you lose at the end. But this is the game,” Guardiola said. “We played the way we want to play and it is a joy to be here, to score in the last 50 seconds and go top of the league.”

With Sparta Prague up next in the Champions League on Wednesday, Guardiola said he did not think injured defender Kyle Walker or midfielder Kevin de Bruyne would be ready.

“We have a few days’ training, but don’t think so,” he said.

Match-winner Stones, who also scored a crucial last-minute equaliser against Arsenal last month, was thrilled with his headed goal from a corner and said the team had been working hard on set pieces.

“Hopefully this is the start of many more. It is a vital part of the game at both ends of the pitch and really pleasing for me personally to get the winner after such a difficult game,” he said.

“I thought it had been chalked off. I tried to speak to the ref but he had a lot of people around him. For me it is the right call. Obviously I am going to be biased but I thought it should stand.”

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has said he has begun talks over a new deal but insisted he has “no idea” if he will remain at Anfield next season.

There is ongoing uncertainty over the future of a trio of Liverpool’s key players, as the contracts of Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah all expire at the end of this term.

Van Dijk, 33, confirmed that contract negotiations have taken place but did not commit his future to the club.

“I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but I don’t know, we will see what happens in the future,” he said.

“My very full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else. What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have been started up and we will see.

“I feel very good, physically, mentally and I am having fun. Discussions are ongoing with the right people and when it’s time to make a decision or whatever, I think you guys [the media] will know it as well.

“But now full commitment and focus is on Liverpool and to be successful this season. So we will see.”

Alexander-Arnold has been subject to similar questions amid links to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Those reports prompted Slot to say his players are not distracted by speculation over their futures.

“I think you underestimate our players. These players are used to being linked with all the top clubs on a daily basis, if they have contracts or not,” he told a news conference on Friday.

“If you think they’re disturbed by this interest then you don’t do justice to how strong they are mentally. This is part of our job. This is part of this world we are living in. You just focus on what you have to do.

“Maybe if you’re 17 or 18 years of age it could be difficult for you. But Trent has won the league, has won the Champions League; Virgil and Mo the same. I don’t think that is a problem for them to perform and that’s what we see at the moment because they’re playing really well.”

Did Arteta get it wrong vs. Bournemouth when Arsenal went down to 10? (2:06)Janusz Michallik and Luis Miguel Echegaray criticise Mikel Arteta’s tactical decisions after William Saliba’s red card in the defeat to Bournemouth. (2:06)

Another topsy-turvy weekend of football is in the books and some of Europe’s top clubs are beginning to look ominous.

Liverpool and Manchester City both eked out important, closely fought wins to steal a march on title-rivals Arsenal in the Premier League, while Real Madrid and Barcelona both ensured that they head into next week’s Clasico (Saturday, 3 p.m. ET; stream live on ESPN+) off the back of victories.

In Serie A, Antonio Conte’s Napoli beat Empoli 1-0 to stay two points clear of Inter Milan at the top of the league, while in Germany it’s Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig going stride-for-stride at the Bundesliga summit.

Yvan Neyou, Tim Kleindienst and John Stones all scored goal of the month contenders, but it was Harry Kane‘s hat trick in Bavaria that really stood out.

What else did you miss around Europe this weekend? ESPN’s Julien Laurens, Sam Marsden and Constantin Eckner recap all the action.

Top takeaway: Arsenal suffer nightmare weekend

There couldn’t have been a more nightmarish weekend possible for Arsenal. While title rivals Manchester City and Liverpool both won, at Wolverhampton Wanderers and against Chelsea, respectively, the Gunners lost their first game of the season in all competitions at Bournemouth.

William Saliba was sent off as Arsenal left Bournemouth with a 2-0 defeat on Saturday. Catherine Ivill – AMA/Getty Images

William Saliba was sent off after just 30 minutes, the north Londoners’ third red card in eight league games this season, and he will miss Liverpool’s trip to the capital next weekend.

Without the injured Bukayo Saka, Mikel Arteta’s team never found their usual rhythm with the ball, while Bournemouth’s efficient press put the visitors under a lot of pressure. Despite conceding two goals after the break, Arsenal still had their chances to return to London with something to show for their efforts, Gabriel Martinelli letting slip a particularly enticing opportunity with the match still scoreless.

After that defeat, Arsenal are now three points behind City and four behind Liverpool. Absolutely everything went against the Gunners this weekend.

Best match: Southampton 2, Leicester 3

For a clash between two promoted sides, we got an absolute treat on Saturday. Between them, Southampton and Leicester City had only won once this season in 10 combined Premier League games, the Foxes getting the best of Bournemouth two weeks ago, so both teams knew how massive this encounter was. The Foxes were 2-0 down inside a half hour, they trailed by the same margin at the hour mark, and completed the 3-2 comeback win in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time. It will undoubtedly be a turning point in their season.

Best goal: Stones vs. Wolves

It wasn’t the most beautiful of the weekend, but Stones’ winner for Manchester City at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday deserves our award for best goal because it sealed a massive victory. After being the hero who earned the champions a late point against Arsenal last month, Stones gave his team three more in the final minute at Molineux on Sunday, a result Pep Guardiola’s team needed to take advantage of the Gunners’ slip-up on Saturday and to keep pace with Liverpool.

MVP of the weekend: Mohamed Salah

The big game of the weekend between Liverpool and Chelsea didn’t disappoint on Sunday, despite a slow start, and there was room for only one hero: Salah. The Egypt international, whose form has been a bit inconsistent lately, scored and provided a wonderful assist for Curtis Jones in the Reds’ massive 2-1 win. The 32-year-old forward has now five goals and five assists in eight Premier League matches this season so far. — Julien Laurens

Top takeaway: Barça’s future shining brightly

Barcelona and Real Madrid both won ahead of the season’s first Clásico; but while Madrid made hard work of beating Celta Vigo — more on that in a moment — Barça recorded a confidence-boosting 5-1 win over Sevilla. There were two more goals for the league’s top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, making it 12 in 10 matches, and there were encouraging performances from this season’s star man Raphinha and midfielder Pedri.

The best news of the matchday was the return from injury of Gavi, 349 days since he last played for Barcelona. His emergence to warm up got the loudest cheer of the night at Montjuic, and he was handed the captain’s armband as he took to the field.

The overriding sensation, as Barça celebrated Pablo Torre‘s second goal in the 88th minute, was just how young this team are. Torre, Pedri, Gavi, Alejandro Balde, Marc Casadó and Fermín López are all in their early-20s. Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí are just 17.. Barcelona’s future is bright; but before getting too carried away, let’s see how they get on against Madrid next weekend.

play2:50

Barcelona thrashes Sevilla 5-1

Barcelona gets two goals from Robert Lewandowski, a screamer by Pedri and a couple late goals from Pablo Torre to take down Sevilla 5-1.

Best match: Celta 1, Madrid 2

Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Celta Vigo had everything: a noisy atmosphere at a rain-soaked Balaidos, three outstanding goals from Mbappé, Williot Swedberg and Vinícius Júnior, an age-defying cameo from Luka Modric — who created the winning goal just three minutes after coming on as a substitute — and an agonising, added-time miss from Celta’s Anastasios Douvikas. Madrid won the game, but Celta showed their new team, full of homegrown talent, can compete with the best.

Best goal: Neyou vs. Atlético

Both Mbappé’s long-distance curler and Swedberg’s intricate team move for Celta — which came after four first-time touches — deserve a mention, but let’s go for Yvan Neyou‘s first LaLiga goal, which put Leganés 1-0 up at Atlético Madrid on Sunday. Atlético fought back to win 3-1, but that shouldn’t undo the joy of Neyou’s first-half rocket past Jan Oblak into the top corner.

MVP of the weekend: Iñaki Williams

Williams needed just two minutes, and four touches, to stake his claim for performance of the weekend in Spain. His first goal in Athletic Club‘s 4-1 victory over Espanyol at San Mamés was a masterclass in economy of movement, turning and finishing before the defence had time to react. Seconds later, he had another, thrashing the ball past goalkeeper Joan García from an angle. Younger brother Nico Willians gets all the headlines, but Iñaki has never looked better. — Alex Kirkland

Top takeaway: Title race is tight but Bayern are back

Bayern Munich were in a bit of a slump before the international break, going winless in their previous three games following an impressive start into the season, but any doubts were put to rest on Saturday thanks to a 4-0 win over VfB Stuttgart. The visitors, managed by former Bayern reserve team coach Sebastian Hoeness, wanted to make a statement at Allianz Arena, but instead Bayern steamrolled Stuttgart in the second half, with Kane scoring a hat trick.

play3:16

Harry Kane nets hat trick for Bayern Munich

Harry Kane gets a hat trick to lead Bayern Munich past VfB Stuttgart.

Those who have accused Kane of failing to show up in big games may look at the opponent and see more evidence to support their theory, but Stuttgart were last season’s runners-up. Nevertheless, the England international may just be happy to have his name on the score sheet again having gone goalless in his three previous games.

Bayern are sitting at the top of the Bundesliga table, with RB Leipzig in second place. These two teams, and potentially defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, seem to have the overall quality to compete for the German championship this season. While the arrival of manager Vincent Kompany has been a breath of fresh air for Bayern, and the record champions have every chance of reclaiming their throne, they won’t escape from their rivals in the title race anytime soon.

Best match: Gladbach 3, Heidenheim 2

Borussia Monchengladbach continue to have a rollercoaster of a campaign, and their 3-2 win over Heidenheim on Saturday was the embodiment of that. The game at Borussia-Park turned into an exciting back-and-forth, with Gladbach emerging as the winners thanks to two goals by Tim Kleindienst in the second half. No matter the three goals or the three points, head coach Gerardo Seoane still hasn’t managed to create the necessary defensive stability to lead Gladbach in the upper third of the table.

Best goal: Kleindienst vs. Heidenheim

Kleindienst’s first goal in Gladbach’s narrow win over Heidenheim was one of the highlights of the matchday. The 29-year-old, who recently made his first appearance for Germany, converted a cross from Alassane Pléa with a beautiful and equally difficult back-heel strike, giving Gladbach the lead over his former team.

MVP of the weekend: Harry Kane

If you score three goals in the marquee game of the weekend, you have undoubtedly earned the MVP award. Kane is still an elite striker, even if he does not always have the anticipated presence in games. For years, Bayern relied on Lewandowski to sink defences, and now they’re counting on Kane to do the same on a constant basis. — Constantin Eckner

What else you missed this weekend

Resurgent Napoli lead Serie A under Conte

Napoli’s 1-0 win at Empoli means Antonio Conte’s team are still top of the Serie A table, with nearest rivals Inter Milan two points behind them thanks to their own tight, 1-0 victory over AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. In fact, there was no change at all in the upper echelons of the table, with all top-six teams recording victories, the most emphatic being Fiorentina‘s 6-0 thrashing of Lecce.

Napoli and Inter were both under pressure to deliver after Juventus, in third, had edged past Lazio a day earlier. A win for Napoli was by no means guaranteed, given that Juve and the Viola had both already dropped points at Empoli this season. Cologne staring down another year in second tier

Cologne hope to only stay for one year in the 2. Bundesliga, but just like Schalke and Hertha Berlin the year before, they must realise that going up against the steadily evolving competition in that league can pose a serious challenge for any big-name club. The three-time German champions, who have been significantly hurt by a transfer ban imposed by FIFA, which will end on Jan. 1, and are managed by former New York Red Bulls boss Gerhard Struber, lost 5-1 at Darmstadt on Friday.

Cologne are now 10th in the 18-team table. Given their defensive shortcomings, the decision makers in the Rhine metropolis may need to accept reality and either make a splash in the January transfer market or begin planning for at least another year in Germany’s second division, which has become the home of so many of football’s fallen giants. — Eckner

Nicol underwhelmed by Liverpool in win over Chelsea (1:53)Steve Nicol shares his frustrations with table-topping Liverpool after Arne Slot’s men claimed a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield. (1:53)

LIVERPOOL, England — A game which brought together two sides building for the future was decided by a player whose legacy has long since been established. There wasn’t much between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday but the home side prevailed with a 2-1 victory which took them back to the Premier League summit courtesy of Mohamed Salah‘s enduring ability to deliver match-defining moments.

Salah was not at his devastating best — midfielder Curtis Jones produced a memorable all-action display en route to netting the winning goal on 51 minutes — but the 32-year-old forward produced a sublime cross to assist him after earlier opening the scoring from the penalty spot.

It is the 34th time he has registered a goal and assist in a Premier League game — only Wayne Rooney (36) has done it more often. And, after Chelsea had looked the better side early on, his emphatically converted 29th-minute penalty wrestled control of the game in Liverpool’s favour and took his league tally to 162, tied with Jermain Defoe at ninth on the all-time goal-scorers list. His 232 goal involvements also puts him tied sixth along with Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero on that measure.

This continuation of Salah’s end product has helped new manager Arne Slot settle in smoothly to the daunting task of replacing Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside, with seven wins from his first eight league games to top the table. The Egypt international has seven goals in 11 games across all competitions this season and perhaps benefitted from a freshness engineered by the decision not to play for his country in Mauritania a few days earlier due to a heightened risk of injury from that match taking place on a plastic pitch.

Slot knows he needs that buy-in from Liverpool’s talisman — with new contract talks looming as his existing deal approaches the final six months — also explaining why he highlighted his work off the ball as the home side hung on to their lead.

“He is important for us, for the numbers he has but it was a bit of a funny remark after the game, I said to Trent [Alexander-Arnold] ‘you have some competition now’ because I saw today that Mo can play as a right full-back as well,” Slot said afterwards. “So the defensive effort he put in today to help the team in that part is what pleased me just as much as his goal and assist.”

Liverpool needed to put in a defensive shift as Chelsea put in a performance which will encourage Blues boss Enzo Maresca that they are on the right track: the Blues had more touches in the opposition box in the first half of a league game than any other team in four years, registered 57% possession, and had consistent spells where they looked more threatening.

Cole Palmer is a wondrous talent but, in contrast to Salah, he wasn’t quite able to influence proceedings as he would have liked, firing over just before the interval and wasting a couple of shooting opportunities in the second half. The 22-year-old is quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s finest match winners, but Salah has held that status for years.

In recent times, Chelsea have deliberately pursued a policy of predominantly signing players aged 24 and under. But for all their lavish spending, they don’t possess a battle-hardened talent of Salah’s pedigree to help polish rough performances during a period of transition. (The enduring irony, of course, is that Chelsea signed Salah aged 21 back in 2014 but that was during an era when young players found the route to the exit door much easier than the first-team dressing room.)

Salah’s penalty — won by Jones after a foul by Levi Colwill — stopped Chelsea in their tracks and on another afternoon where VAR checks were frequent and lengthy, they required a review in their favour to avoid conceding a second penalty as replays showed goalkeeper Robert Sánchez just got the ball ahead of Jones before taking him out.

Chelsea equalised three minutes after the restart as Nicolas Jackson collected Moisés Caicedo‘s pass and finished superbly past Caoimhín Kelleher, deputising for the injured Alisson. But after Salah fed Jones, with Reece James caught fractionally deep and playing him onside, the England midfielder steered a fine effort past Sanchez to restore Liverpool’s lead within moments.

The Blues, to their credit, were undeterred. They were beaten 4-1 here back in January under Mauricio Pochettino, yet they finished the game the stronger side this time. It just wasn’t enough.

In the final phase we saw perhaps the clearest distinction between Slot’s Liverpool side and the Klopp era. Liverpool’s full-backs stopped going forward; Slot replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold with the more defensive-minded Joe Gomez for the final nine minutes; and Jones, who had been marauding forward from midfield, was replaced at the same time by Alexis Mac Allister.

The Argentina international sat deep alongside Ryan Gravenberch and tried to deny Chelsea any space in which to play. It contributed to a nervy finale, but Slot is not Klopp, whose inclination would been to go for the kill when Chelsea wavered after falling behind at 1-0 and, briefly, at 2-1.

Both sides are trying to implement fresh ideas and building belief. Slot is attempting tweaks rather than wholesale changes and that more-settled environment gave Liverpool the edge over Chelsea, who started life under their new manager with another aggressive overhaul of their squad.

“We don’t like losing games, dropping points but if you have to decide the way, then this is probably the way,” Maresca said afterwards. “I’ve been in the stadium many times and have seen Liverpool for a long time — it’s not easy. I think overall, we controlled the game and for most parts of the game we dominated the game, but we lost.”

Chelsea’s defending must improve after just two clean sheets in eight league games; Liverpool can look ahead with greater optimism.

“The better the teams you face the more you need [fight],” Slot said. “In the Premier League, there are so many good teams so if you want to win at least you need to fight and then hopefully the individuals can make the difference.”

Salah continues to do just that.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface was involved in a car accident following the club’s 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, German media reported on Sunday.

Boniface, who scored a 72nd-minute winner in Saturday’s match, on Sunday shared pictures and a video of a smashed car in since-deleted posts on Instagram, as well as what appeared to be a picture of his hand covered in blood.

A club source told Reuters that Boniface was doing well after incident.

German tabloid Bild reported that the Nigeria international was a passenger in the car enroute to Frankfurt airport and suffered minor hand injuries before being taken to hospital.

In a post on X, Boniface wrote: “God is the greatest.”

The Hessen state police website said the accident occurred on Sunday morning.

“A 28-year-old was driving a Mercedes in the middle of three lanes in the direction of Frankfurt when, according to his own account, he lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue and collided sideways with a truck that was driving in the right lane next to the Mercedes,” the report said.

Leverkusen and Boniface’s management agency did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment from Reuters.

The 23-year-old Boniface has scored seven goals in 10 appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions this season.

German champions Leverkusen, who are fourth in the Bundesliga standings with 14 points from seven games, face French side Brest in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Winless in their previous three games in all competitions with a series of lacklustre performances, Atlético had to recover from a goal down after Cameroon midfielder Yvan Neyou gave Leganes the lead in the 34th minute with a superb strike into the top corner.

Sørloth equalised with a cheeky back-heel in the 69th minute before Antoine Griezmann cleverly chipped a cross past the goalkeeper into the back of the net 11 minutes later, with Sørloth wrapping up the win with a close-range strike from a rebound deep in added time.

Atlético climbed to third in the standings on 20 points, four behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, who have a game in hand and will host Sevilla later on Sunday.

A Stockholm soccer derby that could potentially decide the Swedish league‘s title race was suspended in the second half Sunday after Djurgarden supporters threw multiple fireworks onto the field.

The game between Hammarby and Djurgarden is set to resume Monday afternoon without fans after police ruled that the game organizers could not guarantee public safety if play was restarted.

Hammarby is second in the league table and was leading 2-0 in a game where a draw would hand rival Malmo the title with three rounds to spare. Djurgarden is tied on points with Hammarby, and a win would give either team a mathematical chance to overtake Malmo.

Djurgarden supporters’ pyrotechnics disrupted the game, leading to a lengthy delay and eventual suspension. Magnus Lejhall/TT News Agency via AP

Djurgarden supporters set off multiple pyrotechnics with about 15 minutes left to play and the teams were taken off the field for about 50 minutes before a decision was made to finish the game without fans in the stands. But some supporters refused to leave, and police later announced that the game would have to be completed on Monday instead.

In contrast to most of Europe, Sweden’s Allsvenskan soccer league starts in the spring and ends in the fall.

Chelsea boss calls for goal-line technology in WSL

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor called for the introduction of goal-line technology in the women’s soccer leagues after a disputed goal in her side’s win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor called for the introduction of goal-line technology in the women’s soccer leagues after a disputed goal in her side’s win over Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor called for the introduction of goal-line technology in the women’s soccer leagues after a disputed goal in her side’s win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor questioned the lack of use of goal-line technology in the women’s game following her side’s 5-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League (WSL).

Despite taking an early lead through Maika Hamano, Chelsea were pulled back when a ‘ghost goal’ from Tottenham’s Amanda Nildén levelled the tie. Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton insisted that the ball did not cross the line. However, referee Emily Heaslip allowed the goal to stand, booking Hampton for contesting the goal.

Bompastor believes that implementing technology in the women’s game is critical to supporting referees with decision-making while questioning the lack of use of technology.

“I just think in this type of situation, we just need to help the referees,” she said, following her side’s victory.

“From what I was watching, it’s all difficult to say if the ball was in or out. I just feel like if the technology [is there] for the men’s game why don’t we have the same?

“I think it will help the referees, and for the assistant referee, I think that’s a hard call to make. If you are very sure 100 percent the ball was in, yeah you can make the call. If you’re unsure, it’s really difficult, but that’s the way it is. The referee makes a decision; we have to accept that.

“If the technology is on, we should use it. It’s about having a budget – it costs money. If we want to look professional, we just have to have the same thing as the men’s game.”

Currently, Goal-Line Technology and VAR are not compulsory in the WSL because many teams host their fixtures at non-league grounds where the technology is not readily available. Several clubs previously told ESPN paying for instillation is an added cost that teams cannot add to their stringent budgets.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Robert Vilahamn echoed Bompastor’s comments, adding: “VAR or goal-line technology, if we can get it right and not lose the momentum of the game, bring it right in – just make sure we don’t disrupt the games too much,” he said.

“But goal-line technology is a good thing, it’s a quick decision, so why not?”

After the questionable goal stood, a Tottenham own-goal gave Chelsea the lead again before Guro Reiten missed her penalty. However, summer signing Sandy Baltimore was on hand to net the rebound. Tottenham’s Eveliina Summanen scored from a set piece, hoping to give her side a way back into the game; however, it was not enough to overturn Chelsea’s clinical display,

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd secured a brace to complete the evening, taking her to the top of the Golden Boot race with three goals and two assists from four games.

The Blues head into the international break with four wins in as many games, sitting second in the WSL table, while Spurs, who have only picked up a win and a draw so far, sit in eighth.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said the reception given to Gavi gave him goosebumps as the midfielder returned from an 11-month injury layoff during Sunday’s 5-1 win over Sevilla in LaLiga.

Gavi has not played since tearing his ACL while playing for Spain last November but came off the bench for the final 10 minutes against Sevilla at the Olympic Stadium.

The 20-year-old replaced Pedri, taking the captain’s armband in the process, and he was given a an incredible ovation on his return to action from the Barça supporters.

“I am happy for this result and especially for Gavi,” Flick said in a news conference. “It’s really amazing when you see atmosphere in the stadium and the fans. It was goosebumps, unbelievable, and I like this.”

Any doubts about whether Gavi’s intense playing style would be affected by his injury were quickly dispelled as he bounced into challenges immediately.

“The intensity he gave in the match when he came in was good,” Flick added. “But it’s normal, it’s his way to play. Sometimes it’s OK to be more calmer, but it’s not his style of play.”

Gavi said he was delighted to be back, thanked his teammates and the fans for their support and said his time out has helped him to appreciate how fortunate he is.

“I have been dreaming about this for many months and I am grateful to my teammates who made the process easier for me,” he told reporters.

“The hardest thing is not playing, watching from the outside. It’s frustrating, it’s tough. You have to enjoy every moment and [time out] allows you to value the things you have. I feel fortunate to be back.

“I missed playing football the most, this is my life, it is what I have always done. When all the fans and your teammates like you and give you that reception, you feel very lucky.”

Two Robert Lewandowski goals — his 11th and 12 in LaLiga this season — sandwiched a Pedri strike as Barça blew Sevilla away in the first half to make it nine wins from 10 in the league, keeping them three points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table.

Substitute Pablo Torre added two more after the break, with Sevilla’s late consolation coming from Stanis Idumbo, as the Catalan side scored five at the start of a week that will see them face Bayern Munich and Madrid.

“For us every match is important,” Flick added when asked about the meeting his former side in the Champions League on Wednesday and the first Clásico of the season on Saturday.

“It’s not only what seems [to be] the big, big clubs, also this Sevilla [game, it’s] also very important after the international break, to come back with a victory and this was today really good. The players did it well.”

As well as Gavi, Fermín López also returned from injury against Sevilla, while Frenkie de Jong and Dani Olmo were both fit enough to be named on the bench after recent fitness issues.

Flick insisted they will all be ready if needed against Bayern and Madrid.

“They are ready, they will be ready,” he said. “This is for me, our job is to prepare well for the next match.

Getafe, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid… it doesn’t matter. The team will give 100% every match, every minute, they will be ready.

“We also thought that Frenkie would start [against Sevilla], but he felt a little bit of discomfort on Friday so we decided yesterday that he just trains separately, today was much better but to start was not an option.”

Arne Slot has suggested referee John Brooks wanted to prove he would not be intimidated by the Anfield crowd during Liverpool‘s 2-1 win over Chelsea.

Sunday’s game featured several VAR checks including an incident in the sixth minute where Tosin Adarabioyo was shown a yellow card for pulling back Diogo Jota, who threatened to burst through the Chelsea defence just past the halfway line.

Liverpool took the lead after Mohamed Salah converted a 29th-minute penalty, awarded for Levi Colwill’s challenge on Curtis Jones but they were denied a second spot-kick on the stroke of half-time.

Brooks initially pointed to the spot after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez collided with Jones in the box but was sent to review the decision by VAR official Michael Oliver and subsequently decided no penalty should be given.

Nicolas Jackson equalised for Chelsea on 48 minutes — a goal that was deemed offside on the field but overturned on VAR review — before Salah crossed for Jones to score the winner on 51 minutes.

Liverpool hung on to secure a victory which returned them to the top of the Premier League but Slot suggested they may have enjoyed a more comfortable afternoon had the officials adopted a different approach.

Asked about the Anfield atmosphere, the ex-Feyenoord boss said: “The fans were really important for us. I don’t know if this is something people say in England but they said at my former club, which was also an impressive stadium, that ‘yeah, the referees are a bit impressed by the crowd and that’s why you get the easy decisions in your favour.’

“But today showed no matter how loud the fans were, the referee just wanted to show that he was able not to give the decisions he had to make. So it didn’t help us with the referee but it definitely helped our players because they had to work so hard.

“If every time they cheer so hard for you if you make a block tackle, or Darwin [Núñez] sprinted back, or all these moments, that definitely helps you mentally. They were really important for the players but unfortunately, it didn’t happen what all people always think that Anfield always gives you easy penalties.

“Is that true or not? Today, it showed again that it wasn’t.”

Slot described Sunday’s win over Chelsea as the most difficult of his tenure to date.

“Many other games were hard but this might have been the hardest maybe because of the amount of quality players they have and the structure they have,” the Dutchman said. “We had to fight really hard to get this one over the line.”

Pogba reveals doping ban led him to clear out his ‘entourage’ (2:23)Paul Pogba says it’s “anger” and “determination” that’s driving him to return to football following his doping ban, after clearing out his “entourage”. (2:23)

Paul Pogba‘s hopes of playing for Juventus again took a hit on Saturday when the club’s director Cristiano Giuntoli said that the Serie A side are complete without him.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who has a contract with Juve until June 2026, will end his doping ban in March after testing positive for DHEA in September 2023, a banned substance that boosts testosterone levels.

The former France international had his ban cut earlier this month from an initial four years to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and will be eligible to play for Juve as soon as the ban ends.

“Our position is clear. Pogba has been a great player, he has been out for a long time and last year we were forced to invest in other players,” Giuntoli told DAZN ahead of the club’s home match against Lazio.

“So now the squad is complete as it is.”

ESPN reported last week that Pogba could become a free agent after opening talks with Juventus with a view to terminating his contract. A source told ESPN that both Pogba and Juventus are open to the prospect of him restarting his career elsewhere.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said his side’s defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday was “an accident waiting to happen” after William Saliba was sent off in the first half.

Bournemouth won 2-0 thanks to goals form Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert after Saliba was shown a red card for a challenge on Evanilson after 30 minutes as Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

It is the third time this season Arsenal have been forced to finish a match with 10 players, leaving Arteta frustrated that his side’s lack of discipline cost them points.

“We are obviously very disappointed with the result and gutted because we have to play again in that context,” he said. “This time was even more difficult than the previous two we faced this season.

“Playing for 65 or 68 minutes with 10 men at this level is just an impossible task. It’s an accident waiting to happen, not to get the points.

“I cannot fault the team for their effort, their commitment, how intelligent they are to play in the way that we have to do it.”

Declan Rice was sent off in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at home to Brighton earlier in the season, while Leandro Trossard was also shown red in the 2-2 draw against title rivals Manchester City.

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has explained why he performs his signature “cold” celebration after each goal, saying it is about showing the “joy” of football.

Palmer has been in great form so far this season, scoring six goals in seven Premier League games.

In an interview with the Telegraph released on Sunday, Palmer revealed why he performs the move.

“I first did the ‘cold’ celebration last December in a game against Luton where we won 3-2. It’s a nod to my former City academy teammate Morgan Rogers,” he said.

“It symbolises joy, passion and hard determination for the game plus it’s funny as it works well with my name. Everyone knows it’s my celebration. Lots of people might have done it, but everybody knows it is my celebration.”

Palmer was named England Men’s Player of the Year, the Football Association announced earlier this month. He was also named Premier League Player of the Month for September

The forward is hoping they will not be the only individual awards during his career after he was included on the 30-man Ballon d’Or shortlist last month.

“It was a surprise to be recognised at that level so early in my career,” he said. “It’s a huge honour. Winning it would be brilliant, and I believe with hard work and consistency I could get there.”

Chelsea face Liverpool on Sunday as they look to continue their positive start to the season under new boss Enzo Maresca.
