Enzo Maresca has told Cole Palmer that being man-marked is a compliment – but he can’t let those tactics impact his game.
The majestic Blues playmaker was frustratingly nullified by Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones during the recent 2-1 defeat at Anfield.
And now Maresca expects Manchester United to deploy a similar strategy in their bid to stop Palmer at Old Trafford, particularly after interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy fielded both Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte in the same midfield lineup during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup demolition of Leicester.
The Italian boss said: “I am ready for that but Cole, I don’t know if he’s ready! The next step for Cole is not to get frustrated when teams mark him man to man because all of the best players in the world are man-marked.
“After last season, for him it was the first season in terms of arriving at Chelsea, probably it was the opposite – they weren’t too worried about Cole. This year they are all worried because of what he did, so he has to get used to it. The next step is going to be more difficult but he can do it.”
However, Maresca, who was a team-mate of Van Nistelrooy at Malaga, is already ahead of the curve.
His shrewd tactical tweak, which saw Palmer operate closer to the left flank, in last weekend’s 2-1 triumph over Newcastle dismantled Eddie Howe’s defensive blueprint and ensured the 22-year-old attacker bounced back in style.
Palmer’s sumptuous pass helped create Nicolas Jackson’s opener before the former Manchester City starlet struck a second-half winner.

Maresca added: “The only thing we can do is what we did against Newcastle. We’ll move Cole a little bit from his position to give him more time and space.
“The reason he played on the other side that day was because Joelinton would have man-marked him which will happen in so many games.”
While Maresca won’t square off with new United boss Ruben Amorim, he’s adamant the Portuguese coach will prove a success at Old Trafford, explaining: “The only thing I can say is I’ve watched many Sporting games and know the way they play.
“It’s a fantastic style, how they defend, the way they attack so for sure, I don’t have any doubt that he’s going to do a great job at Manchester United.
“Probably the only difficult thing he will find is that it’s a different country. To arrive from Portugal to England, it’s just about adapting to that but overall, he’s a very good manager and he will be great.”

Big-money £108million signing Enzo Fernandez, who is currently out of favour at Stamford Bridge, was also defended by Maresca.
He said of the World Cup winner: “It’s not about how much we paid, it doesn’t mean they must be the best player. At the end of the day they are human beings, we wanted him and paid that money. Players cannot always be at their top level, he is not playing but there is no problem with Enzo.”
