Wesley Fofana almost QUIT Chelsea in the summer only for Enzo Maresca to intervene and convince him to stay.
The Frenchman has endured a rollercoaster few seasons since signing for the Blues in a £70m move from Leicester in 2022. The 23-year-old has made just 28 appearances in all competitions since then due to ongoing injury issues.
And he actually had the chance to leave the club in the summer, with his boyhood club Marseille opening talks. But Fofana was convinced to stay in West London by new boss Enzo Maresca – who confirmed he was relying on the defender as a key member of his squad.
Speaking to French outlet Telefoot, he said: “I had a call that really touched me, and it would be a lie to say that I didn’t consider it. It was Medhi Benatia, sporting director of OM, and it touched me. Everyone knows why… I had a thought, but the goal, at the moment, is to succeed at Chelsea.
“We had a call from Mr Benatia. It’s true that it went ‘boom, boom’ in my heart because I was coming back from injury and I didn’t know if I was going to be part of the club’s project.
“But I had a discussion with the coach and and he told me that he was counting on me this season. So, I said I was very happy, I was 100 per cent with Chelsea. But after that, it’s true that Marseille are in my heart, so we’ll see..”
Fofana has certainly been rewarded for his decision to stay with Chelsea. He has already made eight Premier League appearances for the club this season – those opportunities coming after not a single outing last term.

Fofana’s latest admission comes just a week after he sensationally laughed off a move to Manchester United. Following Chelsea’s win against Newcastle, the defender was asked if he could be tempted to move to Old Trafford in the future.
A fan was recorded asking him “are you coming to United?” Fofana was filmed laughing in response, while he also replied: “Never.” The fan further questions, “why not?” Fofana then retorted with a wag of his finger, with an amused grin across his face.
Ironically, Fofana’s latest outing could come against the Red Devils. Chelsea travel to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon for what is interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy ’s first Premier League game at the helm.
