Coleen Rooney will have been left “devastated” by husband Wayne’s Plymouth Argyle sacking, it has been claimed.

Former Manchester United and England star Wayne was relieved of his duties at Home Park after a tough run left Argyle bottom of the Championship table. They won just four league matches under the 39-year-old, none of them away from home.

It marked the second time in less than 12 months that the ex-striker lost a managerial job. He was dismissed by Birmingham City in January 2024, with his successors failing to save the Blues from relegation.

A return to the punditry sofa has been touted for Wayne, after a successful foray into analysis in the past, with reports suggesting a number of broadcasters are exploring offers. A return to football looks like being a popular with Coleen, if recent coverage is to be believed.

“Coleen was so keen for Wayne’s managerial career to work out,” a friend of the ‘ I’m a Celebrity‘ star is quoted as saying by The Mail. “She knows how much he wanted it and she knows how much he loves football,” they added, suggesting Coleen believes football keeps her husband busy and “out of trouble”.

Plymouth were comfortably in mid-table after nine games of the season, winning three times and earning 11 points. However, they lost nine of their next 15 to plummet down the table.

Kevin Nancekivell and Joe Edwards took joint caretaker charge for the strugglers’ first match of 2025. Bristol City were the visitors to Home Park and led twice, only for Julio Pleguezuelo to rescue a late point.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with,” Wayne said after leaving his job. “Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as Head Coach and I wish them all the best for the future.

“To the Green Army thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever. I would also like to give a special mention to my coaching staff Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan and Mike Phelan for their knowledge, dedication, help and support.

“Plymouth Argyle will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results.”
