Cristiano Ronaldo has told new Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim that he cannot play down expectations at his new club.
Amorim will take over managerial duties at Old Trafford on November 11. After a largely dismal time under Erik ten Hag, excluding the FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May, United fans and hierarchy alike will be itching to see the Portuguese take his place in the dugout. However, Amorim has been told he must aim for the very top from day one by former Real Madrid and Red Devils star Ronaldo.
CR7 took issue with ex-manager Ten Hag’s proclamation that United would struggle to compete for the Premier League and other top prizes. The Al-Nassr forward, who fell out with the Dutchman before seeing his contract terminated in November 2022, also claimed that the club was in need of a complete rebuild.
Amorim comes to United fresh off the back of winning two league titles with Sporting CP and so will be familiar with the intensity that comes with lodging a season-long title challenge. This should see him in good stead, as speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s ‘Rio Presents’ podcast earlier this year, Ronaldo insisted that whoever calls the shots at United simply must aim to win the Premier League and Champions League.
“Manchester, they need to rebuild everything, in my opinion,” Ronaldo said. “The coach (Erik ten Hag), they say they cannot compete to win the league and Champions League.
“Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say: ‘Listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try.’ You have to try.”
Ronaldo lasted just a few months under Ten Hag in his second spell with United before departing after giving an infamous interview to Piers Morgan, where he criticised a number of individuals at Old Trafford. Ronaldo endured a rocky relationship with the ex-United manager.

Ten Hag’s frustration with Ronaldo is believed to have peaked when the striker refused to come off the bench in the dying moments against Tottenham in October 2022. The majority of the squad then disagreed with the player’s behaviour and felt he needed to be reprimanded before it went too far.
However, several United players even felt that Ten Hag went overboard with the punishment he dished out to Ronaldo, with some reportedly suggesting he even tried to humiliate him. Ronaldo was told to train away from the first team, but Ten Hag took that further when he banned him from entering the dressing room, with ESPN even reporting that Ronaldo had to ask an academy player to go in and grab a pair of trainers he had left in there.
Ronaldo later blasted Ten Hag and claimed he did not have any “respect” for him. “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me,” he said in the Piers Morgan interview.
Ten Hag later cryptically hit back at Ronaldo for the former Juventus star’s claim that the Dutchman lacked the ambition to be United’s head coach. “He is far away in Saudi, far away from Manchester, so everyone can have an opinion and is entitled to have an opinion, so it’s okay” he said in September of this year.

However, Ronaldo’s relationship with compatriot Amorim appears to be in a much healthier state. Not many fans will be aware that United’s new manager even once shared a pitch with Ronaldo for the Portuguese national team.
One video recently resurfaced showing Amorim waiting on the sidelines to be introduced, only for it to be revealed that the player he was replacing was the former United striker. While Amorim and Ronaldo never played together at club level, Ronaldo has since reportedly anointed the 39-year-old as ‘the poet’.
In a far cry from his opinion on Ten Hag, Ronaldo apparently bestowed the nickname on his former international team-mate after being majorly impressed with how he talks to the media, as well as his players.
