Danny Murphy admits he was “upset” to see Noel Gallagher on co-commentary for TNT Sports amid fears celebrities could be used more going forward.

The Oasis icon is a die hard Manchester City fan and was following them down in the third tier in the 1990s before their rise to the top of Europe. Gallagher was surprisingly introduced by the TNT Sports team as they played in the Champions League at Sporting Lisbon.

Darren Fletcher led the commentary team with Ally McCoist giving his insight. Gallagher then chimed in with little soundbites throughout the game in Portugal.

Murphy chose to go into the punditry game following his retirement and has dedicated himself to improve his craft, learning about analysis and other elements and has worked on the likes of the BBC. But after seeing Gallagher on the gantry he’s worried that could become a trend.

He said on TalkSport: “It wouldn’t worry me. It would upset me. I wouldn’t want to hear that. Partly from a selfish perspective. Because I know how much work I put in and how difficult it is to try and see things, engage things, spend years watching different techniques and games to try and analyse them.

“So, yeah, that would annoy me. I’ve got no problem with listening to different types of people watching football, pre [or] post [match], maybe even after.”

Murphy added: “As co-commentary, it’s neither here nor there. It doesn’t add much value for me. It’s a very difficult job. I know from doing it. As a third one, it’s fine. But there’s not much there you’re going to learn.

“I’d rather see him before or after the game, giving his little anecdotes about Pep and the players. He gives you something different. Some people will like it because of the novelty. I wouldn’t want to hear it every week, put it that way.”

Gallagher saw his side lose 4-1 as they were humbled by Ruben Amorim, the incoming Manchester United manager. He was also left with egg on his face in the first-half as he claimed: “I wasn’t expecting this to be so easy,” – which he said when City were leading 1-0. However, just 90 seconds after his comment, Sporting netted an equaliser through Viktor Gyokeres and never looked back.
