UFC history maker Matt Hamill has emotionally shared how he can finally hear his family after over four decades.

Hamill, 48, was the first deaf fighter to compete in Dana White‘s promotion. He racked up a 13-8 MMA record between 2005 and 2018, with his most notable victory coming by way of disqualification to hand UFC icon Jon Jones his only career defeat to date in December 2009.

The light heavyweight would have to rely on visual cues and lip reading during his fights, with his story serving as inspiration to budding combat sports stars around the world and being documented in the 2010 film The Hammer, titled after his nickname.

But now Hamill no longer has to live his life without hearing thanks to the latest technological advancements. Taking to Instagram this week, he posted a selfie with his daughter Elaina and son Matt.

The caption read: “I just got the most powerful digital hearing aids ever made. For the first time in 41 years, I can finally hear my kids’ voices, the sounds of people walking and laughing.

“I finally heard my mom’s voice and she cried. I’m looking forward to hearing my brother Pat’s voice too. I only hope he doesn’t have a voice like a foghorn. This is awesome although I know it will take time to adapt to all of this. Happy New Year!”

Hamill’s major life update touched the hearts of his followers. One commented: “Just happy to see this. Moments like these are quite nice.” A second wrote: “Congratulations, this is huge! So happy for you.”

A third suggested: “Time to put on all your fights and hear the crowds that were cheering just for you!!!” And a fourth replied: “That is awesome Matt! What a great gift to hear your children’s voices for the first time.”

Hamill defied being born deaf to become a three-time NCAA Division III National Champion in collegiate wrestling and has continued to break down barriers ever since. He’s now supporting his children in their own budding careers – and will be able to offer them advice better than ever before.
