Former Liverpool star Fabinho claims he hasn’t been pushing former team-mates Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk to join him in Saudi Arabia.

Fabinho, who won the Champions League and Premier League with the Reds, left for Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2023. He has been joined in Jeddah by the likes of Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante.

Al-Ittihad also explored a move for Liverpool star Salah in 2023, only for the Reds to knock back their approach. Moussa Diaby joined from Aston Villa in the most recent summer window, with the French international perhaps considered a cheaper alternative, but speculation over Liverpool’s big-name stars hasn’t gone away.

Salah and Van DIjk, along with team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, are out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 season. There haven’t been too many firm clues about their next step, though, and their former colleague has indicated it’s no longer his concern.

“I haven’t talked to them lately and to be honest I didn’t see any news about them coming to the Saudi League or leaving Liverpool,” Fabinho told FourFourTwo “I know that some players like Mo, Virgil and Trent are at the end of their contract, and I think Liverpool are desperate to get them a new contract, but it’s not my problem any more!”

The 31-year-old has continued to follow his former side since Arne Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp as manager, and isn’t surprised to see them mount another title push under their new boss. “For me it’s normal because Liverpool have one of the best teams in the Premier League and in Europe, so it’s not a surprise for me how well they’re doing at the moment, I think they have everything to fight with Manchester City,” the former Monaco star said.

“Unfortunately Man City are still the team to beat, but Arne Slot is doing a very good job, I really hope Liverpool will keep this run until the end of the season and hopefully bring some important trophies this season.”

Salah and Van Dijk were both on target as Sunday as Liverpool drew away to fellow title contenders Arsenal. Both could be called upon as Slot’s team are up against Brighton in the Carabao Cup in midweek, though they started on the bench for the 5-1 victory over West Ham in the previous round.

“I don’t think it’s possible to do the same as we did against West Ham for the simple reason that we got some injuries, so we don’t have maybe enough players to change them all if I wanted that,” Slot told reporters ahead of the cup tie.

“We played against Arsenal on Sunday, yesterday [Monday] was mostly recovery for everyone, so today when they come in – and they have to come in as we speak – we will find out how they all are and then we have to make a decision on who is going to start.”
