Frank Lampard sent a text message to Coventry City super fan Tom Grennan after becoming manager of the Championship club.

The Chelsea legend signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Sky Blues in November. At the time, Lampard said he was “refreshed and ready to go”, with a mixed bag of results following in the weeks since.

Musician Grennan, whose love of Coventry is well documented, revealed on the Not Just Football podcast that he actually texted Lampard ahead of the announcement while rumours were still circulating.

Grennan told hosts Hayley McQueen, Kelly Cates and Frank’s wife Christine Lampard that he was excited to see if the speculation was true, but he didn’t find the answer he was looking for.

The 29-year-old explained: “Yeah it is my team. I actually messaged him before because there was rumours obviously. So I was like, obviously he was my manager at Soccer Aid.

“I said, ‘Gaffer, tell me that you’re now the manager of Coventry’. He was like ‘I’ll be honest, I’ve had no communication’.” Christine agreed with his text back to Grennan, as she replied: “It was like that at the beginning because people were calling us all the time going ‘Oh I see you’re [going to Coventry]’ – no!”

However, once the good news was confirmed, Lampard did text him back as the popstar said: “Yeah, and then I woke up to a message, it said ‘Up the f****** Cov’ and I was like yes, wicked.”

While Lampard’s run as Coventry manager had started with two wins, one draw and one loss, his most recent performance in the dugout left much to be expected. The Sky Blues were hammered 4-1 by Portsmouth on Saturday (December 21), which sets up for a blockbuster clash on Boxing Day.

Coventry will take on Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle on December 26, as Lampard comes up against his old Premier League foe. Both clubs are looking to stave off the threat of relegation after disappointing starts to the season.
