Leading device maker, Samsung has unveiled the latest generation of its foldable smartphones — the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6. The latest devices were first unveiled at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event which was held in Paris yesterday.

Overall, the new Galaxy Z Flip6 and Fold6 phones did not break much new ground over their predecessors. The design of both foldable phones remains largely unchanged over the previous generation with a few alterations.

The Flip6 is Samsung’s thinnest device yet. And, the Fold6 is shorter and wider than the last one. The dimensions of its internal display remain consistent with the Fold5. The 7.6-inch OLED features a 2,160 x 1,856 pixels resolution. Both displays offer a 120Hz refresh rate.

The Flip6’s display dimensions are similar to the previous generation, with 7.6-inch internal and 3.4-inch external displays. Their resolutions are also unchanged at 2,640 x 1,080 pixels and 748 x 720 pixels, respectively.

Notably, both devices have enhanced Galaxy AI capabilities, an upgraded SoC, and improved camera features. Galaxy AI will enable the devices to perform new photography features. These include instant slow-mo for videos, even if they weren’t recorded on the device. The AI feature will also allow users to generate intermediate frames to produce the slow-motion effect without interrupting the video’s playback.

The AI capabilities will give users access to enhanced versions of Chat Assist, Transcribe Assist, Note Assist, and Circle to Search. This will also include live translations for calls that are processed on-device and not stored in any cloud format, eliminating privacy concerns.

With the AI feature, users can also translate phone call dialogues in real-time and play them back to the call participants in a language that they understand as well as provide a real-time text summary of the calls. However, users must download the relevant language pack for the conversation.

The addition of Galaxy AI photography features significantly boosts the generation of Samsung’s foldables’ photographic capabilities. These include several image editing features powered by Samsung’s Pro Visual Engine.

For example, users can select an object in a photo they have captured and erase, move, or resize it. Galaxy AI will then generate pixels to fill in the blank space. These include image suggestions, such as eliminating reflections, remastering photos, and adding visual effects.

Camera features of Galaxy Fold6 and Flip6

The Galaxy Fold6 features a similar camera setup to the previous generation, with a 50MP primary shooter combined with 10MP telephoto and 12MP ultrawide sensors. The Flip6 has the same 50-megapixel main camera as the Galaxy S24 and an improved 12-megapixel ultrawide. The Fold6 has these two plus a 12-megapixel camera with a 3X optical zoom.

Samsung also added a feature called “Camcorder Grip” for the Flip6. With this, you can hold the phone sideways, folded at a 90-degree angle like a camcorder, and it’ll start recording, offering a zoom slider on the bottom screen as you record.

Also, Samsung added the first-ever vapour chamber in a Galaxy Z Flip phone. These chambers are used on most smartphones today for better heat dissipation, allowing for smoother sustained performance when playing games. That should make the Galaxy Flip6 to dissipate heat while running overall.

Other features

Regarding hardware, both the Samsung Galaxy Fold6 and Flip6 foldable phones come with 12GB of RAM. While the Galaxy Flip6 has 256GB internal storage, the Fold6 affords users to choose between 256GB or 512GB internal storage capacities.

Both pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which enables the inclusion of Galaxy AI. The Galaxy Fold6’s external display is slightly larger than the previous generation, at 6.3 inches. The OLED display features a 2,376 x 968-pixel resolution.
