Gary Neville has continued to back Arsenal for the Premier League title – insisting their poor form could kick them into gear.
The Gunners were beaten at Newcastle on Saturday which means they lost more ground to league leaders Liverpool. The reverse at St James’ Park means Mikel Arteta’s side have only won half of their ten games and have fallen down to fifth at this stage of the season.
Arsenal have been frontrunners in the past two years, but now find themselves trying to play catch up. Liverpool are seven points ahead with champions Man City five points in front. The Gunners are without some of their major names – the likes of Martin Odegaard – who is sidelined.
Neville had made the north Londoners his pre-season pick to claim the top flight – and is prepared to stick by them despite their poor form.
He said: “There is an element of them feeling sorry for themselves because they’ve got a few injuries – come on! You can win the league title, become Arsenal legends! No one is interested in whether you’ve got a few injuries, those players will come back, don’t wait for them.
“They’ve had some tough games, going to Newcastle is tough. But Arsenal at this moment, there are big questions being asked. But I don’t rule them out of winning the title – I’ve still got them winning the title. This might be what they need. I might look stupid and people will play this back in months going, ‘What the hell were you talking about?’
“I feel most connected to a title face and I think what does a team need. Man City aren’t quite right, Liverpool aren’t perfect and something you need this serious blip, it has been a poor start, but they could go on a run, get their players back and be very dangerous. Hit your form in March, April and May – that’s when you really want to be flying.”

Arsenal narrowly missed out on the trophy last season with their only slip up in the final months allowing City to take advantage and retain their crown. Arteta refused to entertain title talk last term and insists they will not be talking about how their chances currently sit after another setback.
The Spaniard said: “I understand that the last eight, nine, 10 games last year we didn’t talk about it, and we’re not going to talk about it now. It’s about how we react. We’re not going to find the right answers or words right now to describe, but how we feel, we certainly have to put it out on that field on Wednesday night against Inter.”
Arsenal’s next two league games will see them face Chelsea on the road before hosting Nottingham Forest – both teams currently sit ahead of them.
