Golden Tate and one of college football’s most iconic celebrations

Golden Tate spent more than a decade as a receiver in the NFL. He won a Super Bowl. He appeared in a Pro Bowl. He made a winning touchdown catch in the playoffs.

For everything he did on a football field, it was an impromptu decision as a Notre Dame player 15 years ago on this day that might stand out from the rest.

“It’s something I’ll never be able to forget,” he said.

The internet will not let him.

“It pops up every year,” Tate said. “It’s one of the main highlights of all time, which I had no clue it was going to happen.”

Tate, of course, is referring to a spectacular catch in the end zone to give Notre Dame a fourth-quarter lead at home against Michigan State on Sept. 29, 2009. But it’s not exactly the score that has been memorialized in college football history. After making the catch, Tate proceeded to leap — arms extended as if to motion for a touchdown — headfirst into the Spartan Marching Band in what can only be remembered as one of the most iconic spur-of-the-moment celebrations of all time.

In what was eventually Charlie Weis’ final season as the Irish coach, Notre Dame had suffered a disappointing upset loss to Michigan the previous week. Michigan State had also lost the previous week, against Central Michigan, and was led by a redshirt sophomore quarterback named Kirk Cousins, whose only win as a starter had come two weeks earlier against FCS Montana State.

For Weis, a loss to that Michigan State team would have been an irredeemable sin. It all added to the gravity of the moment when quarterback Jimmy Clausen dropped back to pass, trailing 29-26 with just over five minutes to play.

After more than 65 yards in the air, the ball dropped perfectly into Tate’s outstretched hands and the rest Tate can relive as if it happened in slow motion.

“I didn’t even realize the band was there,” he said. “I was able to catch it, get my feet in and then my body clock was telling me I had to be getting pretty close to the end of the end zone.”

A careful analysis of the footage shows Tate took about three steps before he encountered the wall of band members. Impact was unavoidable.

“I can’t remember what the little girl played — I don’t know if she had like a little trombone or a flute or a clarinet or something — I see this little girl like right in my line and I know I couldn’t stop, so I’m going to destroy her [if I kept going],” Tate said. “And I got on full-on gear. So, quickly I think, ‘OK, well if I just jump and land on all of them, everyone wins.’ I don’t want to completely hit-stick this little girl who’s in the band.

“They catch me and it’s a win-win. And I probably looked really cool doing it.”

Except Tate’s plan had an undiagnosed flaw.

“Little did I know, this marching band skedaddled out of there so quickly and all that was left to land on were these plastic chairs,” he said.

The adrenaline staved off any physical pain, leaving Tate more concerned about how it might have looked to a national TV audience.

“I go from, ‘This is going to be cool,’ to now, ‘I probably look like an idiot.’ I was going to jump in the band and now I just landed on a bunch of chairs,” Tate said.

Somehow, all of this happened in less than four seconds.

“They could have probably hit me with their instruments,” Tate said. “Someone could have poured a beer on me and I would’ve never noticed, because I was so locked into the game and had tunnel vision. I would have never known.”

Weis didn’t see the leap as it happened, but later had one critique.

“It was the wrong band,” Weis said.

Tate doesn’t remember why the band was that close to the field in the first place, but the response was a predictable one for college football.

“Michigan State fans and alumni sent Notre Dame a bunch of emails of their disapproval of me jumping into their band,” Tate said. “Which I thought was kind of hilarious.”

Archived message board conversations have preserved the opposing fan overreaction, some of which painted the moment as some kind of overarching referendum on Tate and Notre Dame:

“It would be one thing to run into your own band, but what G. Tate did was unclassy.”

“It looked somewhat intentional to me. I hope [MSU coach Mark] Dantonio raises a stink about it.”

“The more I see of ND this season the less I respect them and Weis.”

The touchdown stood as the game winner, and the bigger conversation after the game was more about what effect the result had on Weis’ job security.

“It’s a big win for Notre Dame, it’s not a big win for Charlie Weis,” Weis said after the game.

It was the first of a three-game winning streak that saw the Irish climb back into the AP Top 25 before falling apart late in the season. Weis was eventually fired two days after the season ended and replaced by Brian Kelly.

Fifteen years later, Tate’s leap is appreciated for the entertaining moment it was, and it holds a special place in Irish lore. It has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube, and it continues to be discussed on online platforms. A few years ago, it was even memorialized in a Notre Dame children’s coloring book created to help Notre Dame fans pass the time during remote schooling.

“Being a part of history from such a prestigious and traditional university is like pretty special,” Tate said. “It was my honor to represent the university for the years I was there and now to be just part of the history books. Not only for I guess my celebrations, but also for my play.

“Now that I think about these stories or retell these stories, they seem a lot better than they were back then because I guess that was just my life. And now it’s like, ‘Man, that was really cool.'”

Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí has voiced concerns that Liga F is “stagnating” and believes the league should show humility and take inspiration from the Women’s Super League (WSL) to reach its potential.

Despite Spain’s triumph at the 2023 World Cup, the league has struggled to develop, leading several players to move away to the WSL in England, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States and the Liga MX in Mexico.

Bonmatí, widely regarded as the best female footballer in the world, has spent her entire career playing in Liga F. Despite Barcelona’s success, she has expressed frustration over the league’s insufficient support and infrastructure, which she believes are holding it back from becoming one of the best leagues in world football.

“Other leagues are overtaking us at an incredible speed, when we have the potential to be a top league, an example of a league,” the 28-year-old told The Athletic.

“We are stagnating. We are not getting any better. The league does not even have a sponsor; what interest is being put into the league? Who is running the league?

“We should be more humble and look at how the English leagues do things, and if those changes do not come then it is a sign of people who run this league not being interested in moving forward.”

Two of Bonmatí’s compatriots and former Barcelona teammates — Laia Codina and Mariona Caldentey — have moved to the WSL in the past 12 months, both choosing to play for Arsenal.

Codina signed for the north London side last season after Spain’s World Cup win while Caldentey moved on a free transfer this summer and is set to make her WSL debut on Sunday against Manchester City.

Caldentey shared Bonmatí’s thoughts over the lack of development in Liga F, where she spent a decade playing for Barça.

“The Spanish League is not going how we would like it,” she told BBC 5 Live Sport.

“When England won the Euros, everyone could see a really big change in the league and we missed [that] in Spain.

“We won the World Cup, and it changed nothing, so I think it [the WSL] is right now the best league to play in.”

Codina echoed her teammates’ feelings, adding: “I really feel that nothing changed in Spain [after winning the World Cup].

“Here, you can see that everything is changing; everything is improving. The clubs are spending more money. Maybe that’s why more Spanish players are coming here because it’s a challenge and an exciting place.

“Of course, in the national team, they ask a lot [about the WSL]. They want to know how it is and how it is going here. I hope that we can bring more people here.”

Earlier this month, Bonmatí signed a new contract with the Champions League holders, committing her future to the club until 2028. Reigning WSL champions Chelsea had expressed interest in the midfielder and were willing to pay the €3 million ($3.35m) release clause, her agent Cristian Martin told Catalunya Radio.

A source told ESPN that her new contract will make her the highest-paid women’s player globally.

“My decision to stay is 100% because of Barça as a club and if my decision was focused on the league instead of the club, then I would not have stayed, this is clear,” she said.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his belief that players are offered no protection by the football calendar and added that players voicing their concerns over the number of games they play is “a good starting point.”

The issue of increased player workload has picked up steam over the past week, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri saying that players are willing to go on strike over it. His comments have drawn support from Real Madrid‘s Thibaut Courtois and Barcelona‘s Jules Koundé, while Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti suggested that players would consider being paid less to play less.

Maresca is the latest figure from the footballing fraternity to weigh in on the matter.

“Yes, no doubt,” he said at a news conference on Friday, when asked if there are too many games on the football calendar.

“In terms of games, it’s too much. We do not protect players. The only ones that can do something is the players. We can help them. I think in the last two weeks some of the players have explained what they think, and I think it’s a good starting point.”

Chelsea left Cole Palmer, Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia out of their UEFA Conference League squad to manage their minutes over a long season.

Chelsea are eighth in the Premier League after four games and face West Ham in a London derby on Saturday.

Maresca confirmed that Enzo Fernández and new signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will be available for the trip to the London Stadium after both missed last weekend’s win against Bournemouth through illness.

However, club captain Reece James and Malo Gusto remain sidelined with fitness concerns.

Alisson Becker is an injury doubt for Liverpool‘s clash with Bournemouth, manager Arne Slot said on Friday.

The Brazil international has started each of Liverpool’s four Premier League games this season, keeping three cleansheets and also featured in the Merseyside club’s 3-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday.

However, Slot clarified that Alisson’s injury predates the midweek game at the San Siro.

“Alisson is still a doubt if he can train today. We have to wait and see,” Slot said at a news conference on Friday.

“He has a slight issue with one of his muscles. We wonder if this game tomorrow is coming too early or not,” he added.

“He didn’t do it in the Milan game, he felt it before then he felt it more and more. Now we have to see if he’s ready for the weekend.”

In the build-up to their Champions League opener, Alisson had been critical of the increased workload footballers face, saying “nobody asks the players what they think about adding more games.”

When Slot, who joined Liverpool from Feyenoord in the summer, was asked about the contrast between the football calendars in Netherlands and England, he said: “Until now I haven’t seen anything different but Premier League has four extra games and the League Cup. From the start to now we’ve played just as many games as at Feyenoord — that’s not an issue to me.

“But [the] main difference with Premier League to Europe is we have to play at Christmas and New Year. The quality of the league, of [Nottingham] Forest and Bournemouth, is much much higher than if you play in Eredivisie against a team not challenging for the top six.

“We are thinking about what’s to come, we are aware of the fact it’s a long season. We need a lot of players so they also need once in a while playing time and we take that into account when making a line-up.”

One player who has struggled for minutes at Liverpool this season is Darwin Núñez, who has yet to start or score for the club this season. However, Slot was encouraged by his showing off the bench against Milan and said he expects the goals to come for the Uruguay international.

“He needs the same as all the others, work really hard and the goals will come. that’s what he did against Milan, he came in for the team and then as a result of that attackers have goals or assists. It happened with Cody [Gakpo] so if you play for a team like Livepool you’ll get them,” he said.

“For me it’s the work you do without the ball. He will get his chance in the near future, we play a lot of games, he is fitter and fitter and understand day by day what we want from him. But he’s in competition with Diogo [Jota] who has done well.”

The TAD had opened proceedings against Tebas in July after Madrid had lodged a complaint against him.

Madrid accused the LaLiga chief of abuse of his powers and lack of transparency in calling and managing the assembly on August 2021, when the agreement with investment fund CVC over TV rights was discussed with clubs.

While Tebas has avoided suspension, LaLiga said in a statement on Friday that it completely disagreed with TAD’s resolution and that it will appeal against the ruling.

The statement said: “TAD has ruled on a complaint from Real Madrid CF for having called the General Assembly of 12/08/2021 with eight days’ notice, instead of the required 10 days, using the urgent procedure, without expressly indicating the reasons for the urgency in the call.

“From LALIGA’s point of view, there is no violation in the conduct of President Javier Tebas Medrano. Furthermore, the convening of the General Assembly complied with all statutory requirements.”

LaLiga clubs voted in December 2021 in favour of a €2bn ($2.2bn) investment deal with private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, despite the opposition from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Club.

Arsenal wrap up a gruelling week on the road with a third straight away game when they face champions Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, and manager Mikel Arteta said his squad had been preparing for the clash since preseason.

After beating Tottenham away in a north London derby last weekend, Arsenal flew to Bergamo, Italy and got a goalless draw at Atalanta in the Champions League on Thursday. They have little time to rest, however, with City next up at the weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side have edged Arsenal to win the title in the last two seasons and once again the two clubs are first and second in the league after four games, with City two points clear at the top.

“We’ve been preparing for this since preseason. Obviously, we knew the schedule and we know that it’s extremely rare to play in these conditions with three massive away games in six days,” Arteta said.

“But it was what it was so we have prepared for that, both physically, mentally and tactically.

“We’re making sure that everyone is ready for it because we’re going to need them, especially with the injuries that we had from the international break.”

Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard remains sidelined with an ankle injury sustained on duty with Norway, and Arteta is unsure of the midfielder’s return date.

“We need to see the development in the next week or so, how the ankle reacts first of all and then the staff will give me an update on the time frame and how long he’ll be out for,” the Spanish coach said.

Arteta added that there were no fresh injuries after the draw at Atalanta but had hoped for an extra day of rest after City drew at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

“We wanted the same as them, we’re not getting it, so we have to adapt and make the most of the time that we have today and tomorrow and on the morning of the match to prepare in the best way to go there and win the game,” he said.

Although City have had Arsenal’s number in the past, they have not beaten Arteta’s side in their last three meetings in all competitions, with their last win coming in April 2023.

Arsenal also boast a stellar away record in 2024, dropping points in just the 0-0 draw at City last season, and Arteta said he expected a competitive atmosphere at the Etihad.

“We go to the home of the champions, the team that I think in Premier League history has been the most consistent ever, not only in terms of results but in terms of dominance and consistent top performances,” he said.

“This is the challenge. We have to go there and prove that again we’ve made another step and we can compete.”
