The boxing community was sparked into conversation by Jake Paul’s victory over Mike Tyson, a result that may not sit well with Adam Kownacki.
Following his points win at the AT&T Stadium last weekend, ‘The Problem Child’ has climbed to 128th in the BoxRec heavyweight rankings, surpassing Kownacki, who was once touted as one of the most promising prospects among the world’s top heavyweights.
Currently, the Polish powerhouse is on a five-fight losing streak, with four losses by knockout. Yet, it wasn’t too long ago when ‘Babyface’ held an impressive 20-0 record, which included a unanimous decision triumph over ex-IBF world champion Charles Martin.
In 2018, Kownacki, who boasts 15 knockout victories, decisively defeated Martin in a 10-round bout. He was subsequently ranked within the top six of all four major boxing organisations before consecutive defeats to Robert Helenius triggered a decline in performance that continues to this day.
After his losses to Helenius, Kownacki also fell to Ali Eren Demirezen, Joe Cusumano and Kacper Meyna. However, his defeat to Cusumano was later declared a no contest after Cusumano tested positive for a prohibited substance.
He also faced fellow Pole Artur Szpilka, who had challenged Deontay Wilder for the WBC title just six months prior to their match. After his recent defeat to Meyna in March, he’s tumbled down to no. 129 in the heavyweight rankings, while Paul’s star is rising following a decisive victory over Tyson.

The 27-year-old ultimately had his way with ‘Iron Mike’, despite some early scares, although there’s been debate about whether the bout should impact professional rankings. Paul is now 11-1 in his boxing career to date.
“I wanted to give the fans a show, but I didn’t want to hurt somebody that didn’t need to be hurt,” he said post-victory. Tyson, meanwhile, saw his ranking plummet to 309 in the heavyweight category after his points loss. The 58-year-old’s ring rust was evident, and understandable considering that, prior to the fight, he he hadn’t competed professionally since 2005.
