Erik ten Hag’s contract at Manchester United was finally terminated due to his team’s lack of potency in front of goal, Lee Sharpe claims.
Having suffered multiple setbacks during the early period of the new Premier League campaign – on the back of not only the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish last term but a summer where £200million was splashed on new recruits – Ten Hag’s time at Old Trafford came to an end on Monday. And Ruben Amorim has since been identified as the frontrunner to take up the reins.
Part of that huge expenditure was spent on £36.5m struggling forward Joshua Zirkzee, whilst during the Dutchman’s tenure, the likes of Antony and Mason Mount also arrived for hefty fees and have totally failed to impress.
Sharpe – a three-time league winner with United – believes that such signings over the past couple of years have simply not been firing enough, and their lack of goals from attacking players eventually led to the manager being ousted.
“I definitely think that Manchester United’s profligacy has cost them too many games this season, and, ultimately, it’s cost Erik Ten Hag his job,” Sharpe told BestBettingSites.com.
“We’ve seen United dominate teams for 20-25 minutes a lot this season and, in those periods, they look like they’re capable of giving anybody a game.”
Though the majority of those in United’s forward arsenal have been lacklustre, Marcus Rashford, who found the net 30 times in all competitions during Ten Hag’s debut term, has been particularly sub-par. He has just a single league goal this term and failed to register a single shot in his first three starts.

“When they repeatedly miss big opportunities, the confidence starts to go and that also gives encouragement to the opponent,” Sharpe added. “They just looked a bit bereft of confidence at times [under Ten Hag].”
Yet, one player that Sharpe feels can be slightly redeemed is Danish ace Rasmus Hojlund. The 21-year-old, despite enduring a rocky start upon his Manchester arrival, has shown glimpses of his £72m-rated talent and could move on from an injury that sidelined him for the start of this season to make an impact.
“Rasmus Hojlund will come back into the team and make them better.” Sharpe continued. “He gives them a focal point up front. But, it’s unfair to rely on him to score all the goals that United need to win football games.
“We need to see more players chipping in and the goals being spread around the team. It sounds obvious, but if United had put the ball in the back of the net, then they wouldn’t be where they are in the table this season.”
